Bush petitions to have No. 5

I would be surprised if he is allowed to wear No. 5, but I wish the NFL would begin to give stronger consideration to granting exceptions to the numbering system in certain cases. I know there is no objective standard that can be applied to such requests, but where a player has had a particularly noteworthy college career wearing a non-conforming number, exceptions should be allowed (examples -- Doug Flutie with No. 22, Bernie Kosar with No. 20). Colleges generally conform to the NFL's numbering system, so it is unlikely that we would see a flood of requests.

The only numbering rules colleges go by have to do with pass eligibility. Outside of that they pretty well run all over the place. You got guys like Brodrick Bunkley wearing 86, Williams wearing 9, Sims wearing 34, Tye Hill in 8, etc....If they give one guy an exception that will just open the floodgates. The League office really isnt worried about a players legacy from college as much as they are keeping the status quo.

Just let anyone have any number.

Like Mac said there is a reason why the rules are in place. They are there to make it easier for the refs (and fans) to tell a players position on the field. Whether or not they are an eligible receiver.

College is getting by.

College also allows two players on the same team to wear the same number in the case of having more than one hundred players. Because, you know, teams need that many players.

I dont think it really should be that big of a deal, but I dont see the NFL making a change or allowing an exception just for the sake of doing so. If a team ran out of 20-49's for some crazy reason then they would probably bend and open up other pass eligible numbers, but that shouldnt ever be a problem so I dont see it changing.

Another difference is that in college 90's are also pass eligible.

The NCAA football program isn't as well structured or disciplined as the NFL, either.

After a couple of special teams injuries, Wisconsin's kickoff team once had two players wearing #20 on the field at the same time. I think it was in the late 1990s.

The excuse for the fans is pretty lame. Anyone at a hockey game ever say "Gee, I wish the NHL made defencemen wear specific numbers so we'd know who they were!" Heck, they don't even wear numbers for test cricket. Don't see anyone crying about that either. I can understand at least the reasoning for eligibility, but you can always make a down lineman eligible in formation, putting the reasoning on not-quite-solid foundation. Besides, if a referee can't tell the difference between a wide receiver and a left tackle, he should invest in thicker glasses... ;)

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008
