Cleveland Fighting Walleye

Being an avid fisherman for Walleye, Muskie and pike (all related more or less), I'm happy to see a team naming themselves after some freshwater game fish ...it DOES have nasty teeth by the way!!!

One name change I'm not in favor of is anything regarding the Tampa Devil Rays. Great logo, great name. In fact, too good for MLB, would have been a better name for an NHL franchise than Tampa Lightening!!!

And I heard someone mention that Tampa was considering renaming them the Tampa Tarpons...how long would it be before some announcer slipped and called tham the Tampons?

And then there are those of us who just can't get enough of the one-year wonder that was the San Francisco Spiders...

Oh, man the Spiders. I get nightmares looking at their pregame jerseys.

I don't think I've ever seen a spider look less intimidating.

And this is coming from an arachnaphobe...

Unfortunately, the I got done in by its own ambition. They exploded from being a Michigan-centered bus league into a continent-wide league going from Los Angeles to Orlando, and from Quebec down to Houston. A splashy feature in SI, nation-wide promotional contracts with the likes of Anheuser-Busch... good God, it was like the NHL, only without being the NHL. Unfortunately, 6 years of owners trying to write checks their butts couldn't cash caught up to everybody and... kaboom.

But God, what a fun run it was. I'd love to experience a time like that in minor league hockey again and see it sustain. I just don't know if that's possible anymore.

The Phoenix Roadrunners - Salt Lake City Golden Eagles - San Diego Gulls was a trio of teams that cuold give Slap Shot a run for its money. I still remember the night the backup goalies went at it during a Phoenix/Salt Lake City game. I'm not a fight fan, but geesh, that was one hell of a game.

Minor league hockey fights are the best. My favorite was a chippy playoff series between Chicago and Milwaukee a few years back. I went to Game 2 in Milwaukee and then game 3 in Chicago. In Milwaukee, there were no fewer than two bench clearing brawls, and at one point the players on the bench were leaning over the glass divider and swinging their sticks at each other.

There was a huge brawl after the game, and then about 10 seconds after the puck dropped for Game 3, everyone went at it again. I'd never seen anything like it. Even better than in a Wolves-Sound Tigers Calder Cup Final game where there was a bench-clearing brawl AFTER THE GAME WAS OVER.

Well, in all fairness, if I was a hockey fan in Lowell, I wouldn't exactly be fired up about heading out to see a team that looked like it was basically using my town as a placeholder until something better came along. In fact, I'd want to get that team out of there ASAP and replace it with a team actually interested in being in my town, even if it was in the no-longer-East Coast League, or *shudder* the U-HauL.

Rumour has it the Quebec Major Junior League wants to put another team in New England. Perhaps Lowell could be their answer if the market opens up. It would give the Lewiston MAINEiacs a New England rival.

BTW, the Cleveland team will be affiliated with Colorado.

Okay

1. I think moving the Norfolk Admirals to Rockford would be great for the Blackhawks.

2. Edmonton needs to put a team somewhere in Central Canada/USA or in the East. Given that San Antonio is the western most team, having them put a team near Edmonton would be putting a team in no mans land for the league.

3 Remember The failed Cincinnati Rail Raiders franchise was sold to a group in Windsor, Ontario and is supposed to bring the team there in a year or so.

4 I heard this a long time ago that when the New Jersey Devils move to their new arena in Hoboken or Newark or where ever they are moving to they might move the Lowell team to Continental Airlines Arena.

5. Hockey in Omaha sounds like it was a total failure, Calgary should move the team. Im not trying to play favorites, but the AHL should try Cincinnati again, just dont put them at US Bank Arena(The ECHL Cyclones are drawing almost less than 1000 on many nights), that place is just not a good hockey arena and its very pricey. Put them in the Gardens and make them cheap and family friendly like the Ducks were. Just dont try to do what the Rail Raiders attempted.

6 Putting a team in Orlando would not work. TD Waterhouse Centre kicked the Seals out a couple of years ago and the Magic are supposed to move to a new arena soon anyway with the TD being torn down. That and southern most team east of the Mississippi is Norfolk, who might move to Rockford.

7 Carolina Hurricanes have thought about moving the Albany River Rats to somewhere in the Carolinas.

8 Dont know why the AHL is going back to Quicken Loans arena. Not many people went to Barrons games

4. The Devils will not be putting a team in the CAA. They own the new arena in Newark and are pushing for the CAA to be demolished so that all the big events and concerts that want to stop NJ will go through Newark; thus, more cash for them. The most likely situation I've heard is Lowell moving to Trenton with the ECHL Trenton Titans moving to Atlantic City making the only NHL-AHL-ECHL system entirely in one state.

8. Orlando could work if there were a few more teams into the South. The Seals were kicked out because A. David Waronker didn't have thebest record with paying people and didn't always pay his rent to TDWC and B. They were trying to lure either ECHL or AHL hockey, preferably AHL. I've also heard rumblings that if Atlanta-Chicago ever falls through, the Thrashers could have the Glads move up to the AHL since the Gladiators are already drawing well in an AHL sized arena (averaging 5,725 in a 11,355 seat arena). That would help Orlando out greatly.
