How is Hartford not on the short list?

Simple...

* The population of the City of Hartford (124,558) is significantly less than the civic populations of Houston, Winnipeg, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Hamilton, Kansas City and Pittsburgh.

* The population of the Hartford Metropolitan Area (1,304,067) is significantly less than the populations of the Houston, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Portland and Kansas City Metro Areas, as well as smaller than the Metro Las Vegas population. The only "short list" markets it outpaces in terms of Metro Area population are Winnipeg and Hamilton.

* The Hartford/New Haven Television Market ranks significantly lower (#28) in the number of television households than the TV Markets of Houston (#10) and Seattle (#14), lower than Pittsburgh (#22) and Portland (#23), just ahead of Kansas City (#31) and well ahead of Las Vegas (#43).

* Hartford's current arena is older (opened in 1975/renovated in 1980) than all but Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena and Seattle's Key Arena. It has a lower seating capacity for hockey (15,635) than all but Seattle's Key Arena and Winnipeg's MTS Centre.

Bottom line? With the exception of the marginally favorable TV Market numbers, Hartford's numbers just don't add up when it comes to determining the viability of modern major professional sports markets.

Also Hartford is close to Boston, Long Island, New York City and New Jersey, 4 teams lumped together is enough, thats what doomed the Whalers in the first place.

Hartford could've remained viable if the Whalers never moved, but it would be very difficult to re-introduce a team there.

At least they won last year's Stanley Cup... <_<

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

No, what killed the whale was that Karmanos wanted to move the team. Hartford fans supported them, their owner just stunk.

Mark this down.

The Penguins are not moving to Kansas City or any other location. They will get an arena deal done within the next 30 days.

No inside info, just a feeling I have had for the past week. Though for a while yesterday I thought KC had the inside track. I doubt Pittsburgh will come this far, to let it slip away.

I hope they stay. But you guys do deserve a team. Hopefully the pens stay and a team will move or the NHL will give you guys a team.

now im getting the same feeling I got when the Steelers went throught the playoffs last year... That there was no way it could possibly end. It was our fate to win. Im getting the same feeling now. Im getting the feeling that theres no way they can leave us. They are our team. I really hope im right. I hope they stay.

They were smart to have an excellent offer in hand before going back to the Pittsburgh politicians. Bring a sweet deal to get a sweeter deal. However the state already screwed them by shooting down the free arena from the casino, now the people are going to have to pay.

The one lynchpin could be the Sprint Center being ready next october. The new Pittsburgh arena will be 09 or later.

That and I guess KC can make another counter. Offer up something sweet with the entertainment district next to the arena. That's pure speculation.

When the arena is ready by is not going to matter. If the Pittsburgh has a good deal the Pens will stay and play a few more years at Mellon. I don't think Mario want to move the team so Kansas City has to come in with an over the top offer that Pittsburgh can't even come remotely close to offering. If it's somewhat close the Pens stay. In order to lure the Pens to KC it might be to the city of Kansas City and the managing company of the Sprint center's financial detriment a little. Either that or Pittsburgh and the the state of Pennsylvania really drop the ball (Which wouldn't be surprising).

The thing that is pushing this is that the Mellon Arena lease ends in June not when the Sprint Center is opening. The opening of the Sprint Center is just a nice little coincident that means if the team does move they won't have to play a few years in Kemper.

Just not sure KC has anything else they can offer up.

Maybe increased revenues. Partner in with Cordish in the Power & Light entertainment district (across from arena).

The thing they said was surprising to the pens was the business support. Something I guess is a bit lacking in Pittsburgh. They were said to be impressed by the "Movers and Shakers" at their breakfast.

We are talking about companies like Sprint, Farmland, American Century, The Hall family (think Halmark Cards).

So much we are unware of. It's hard to make a determination.

I still think the bet is they stay.

(PA Governer) Ed Rendell will probably give the Peguins a great deal in exchange for Crosby and Malkin to the Flyers.

You guys out west are funny <_<

HOW ABOUT THE "OKLAHOMA CITY PENGUINS" (that name makes me sick)

-Oklahoma City minor league hockey owners eye Pens

OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Oklahoma City business group says they're interested in landing a National Hockey League franchise and expect a formal invitation to be extended next week for the Pittsburgh Penguins to visit the city's Ford Center arena.

The Penguins and owner Mario Lemieux have been seeking a new arena in Pittsburgh and already have an offer to move to Kansas City.

"We've always had an interest in the NHL or anything that contributes to Oklahoma City or the Oklahoma environment," Bob Funk, the founder and CEO of Express Services Inc. and the owner of the Oklahoma City Blazers hockey team, told The Oklahoman. "I think the NHL has a good future."

Funk and Brad Lund, CEO of Funk's Express Sports, met with Oklahoma City leaders Thursday and tabled for the weekend a decision to invite the Penguins, the newspaper reported.

"It's Pittsburgh's team to lose, and Kansas City is well ahead of us," Lund acknowledged.

Funk said he would not go forward without consultation from Oklahoma City leaders, who have sought to bring a permanent NBA franchise to town. Oklahoma City currently hosts the NBA's Hornets, who are scheduled to return to New Orleans after this season.

"Like we've talked about before, the first team in certainly would have the advantage," Funk said. "That ended up being the NBA. If the NBA is not going to be here, then I would think there would be corporate support for hockey."

Funk also speculated that an NHL team could land in Tulsa, if an NBA team is in Oklahoma City. Tulsa is building a new downtown arena scheduled to open in 2008.

"I'll talk to Tulsa," Funk said. "That's always a possibility, too. We have very successful [Central Hockey League] operations in Tulsa. Our operations over there are doing very well and they have been for a long time."

I pray my pens stay in pittsburgh... and not KC as I dont want to cheer for the same team as that Fatass from Topeka... Streeter...lol...

That being said i do think KC is the only true viable relocation option unless someone can make a huge offer i think its KC or they ain't movin

and Maz by my count Mario saved the team 3 times already... drafted, bought the team, and the third when he came out of retirement... but heres hoping for 4

I would to draw all the KC supporters to some concepts I made. I post it here only because it's now plummeted to page 2 of the concepts section without a single comment.
