Thanks.

actually, if you are doing it in illustrator, your best bet is to do it like this (this is using Illustrator CS2 on a mac):

• set up your text in the typeface you want, without any any strokes to it. make sure your text is kerned the way you want it before you start any of the next steps.

• convert your text to outlines

• go to Object -> Envelope Distort -> Make with Warp

• in the Warp Options window, select the drop down menu and select "Bulge"

• adjust the sliders accordingly. odds are that you will only need to use the "bend" slider. turn the preview on and slide away!

• after you hit OK, go to Object -> Expand and make sure "fill" and "stroke" are checked. that makes the points editable again, if needed.

• from there you can now add any stroke or beveling effects you want/need to add.

hope that helps.

well yes you can outline text or whatever you like before and expand after but its the same warp console.

if you are just using the text as its own envelope you dont actually need to use the envelope distort.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I am actually looking to get the highlight effect in the letters. They have two different shades in the letters. The warp effect I am very familiar with. But i am just looking how to do the shades in the letters...

Thanks!

If, however, you're looking for how to do the bevel effect, check this out: http://www.letterheadfonts.com/tipsandtric...cts/index.shtml

The Letterhead Fonts site has a lot of great tips for doing all sorts of effects in Illy and PS.

true. i didn't realize that, since i rarely ever go to the effects menu. i usually manually set my own warp/arc/arch effects using the envelope distort function and the direct select tool.

If you want the beveled letters, nothing beats the quality of drawing the bevels by hand, usually right on top of the other color.

Ok, I'm just gonna post this here to keep from cluttering the boards. Does anyone know how to do this sort of 'bulge' effect in Inkscape?

this has been driving me crazy, i've been doing it by hand. anyone know the answer?

I tried running through this tutorial but it is confusing me..big time. Is there a different way of doing this or a different tutorial on it?

Thanks!

In Illustrator just use the "offest path" function. Make sure you are document is set to POINTS not inches, then select the word and go to OBJECT scroll down to Path and Offset Path. Being in points will allow you to select in whole amounts how far you want to inset the path. Since you are insetting, you would type in (minus), -4 or -8 , before the variable depending on how far you inset the path. Then you can manipulate any funky corners or stray points manually.

I also do the beveling look using the same principles, then click and dragging to cut objects away from each other to create the effect. They way that website is showing is actuallly more work than you need to do. If you have firm grasp of what the functions of the Pathfinder pallete are, then you can pretty much do anything with type.
