2008 MLB Season

The Dodgers have acquired Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox, SI.com's Jon Heyman and NESN reports.

NESN believes the Red Sox are getting Jason Bay in a three-team deal, and SI.com confirms that's part of it. We imagine the Pirates are getting Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier and more, but that's just speculation. Jul. 31

:jawdrop:

Theo really did it. Damn.

So Manny Ramirez, Brandon Moss, Craig Hansen and 7 million for just Bay? I'm hoping that another body or two is coming back to Boston.

Bob Nightengale has the Bucs getting Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss from the Red Sox and Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris from the Dodgers, correcting what looks like a typo in the Rosenthal report.

So, wait, the Red Sox are giving up Hansen, Moss and Ramirez? That's quite a lot, if I do say so myself.

Wow, if that is it the Red Sox they really wanted to get rid of Ramirez, and got ripped off.

Yeah, I'm starting to think the Hermida-Ramirez-Bay thing would have been much better for the Carmines.

EDIT

Rotoworld:

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Dodgers have acquired Manny Ramirez and the Red Sox have gotten Jason Bay in a three-team deal.

The Pirates will be getting four minor leaguers. Heyman doesn't say whether they're all coming from the Dodgers or if Boston is giving up one or two. If it's all prospects to Pittsburgh, then players like Scott Elbert, James McDonald, Andrew Lambo, Ivan DeJesus Jr. and Austin Gallagher could be involved. The Dodgers might have to Juan Pierre back in center field now, with Ramirez in left and Matt Kemp in right. They've typically used Kemp in center when Andruw Jones has been unavailable, but neither Ramirez nor Pierre makes much sense in right.

I'm sorry, but if I'm the Boston Red Sox, and I am in the middle of a pennant chase, I would much rather have a disgrutled, care-free, free agent-to-be Manny Ramirez, than Jason Freaking Bay. Forget prospects, this isn't a move an elite team makes.

I would consider this trade to be a massive and disappointing downgrade for the Red Sox ... Massive.

I'm pissed about it, but it seems like no one else is. I think Manny was right about the Red Sox making him look bad.

Jason Bay isn't a downgrade from Manny... certainly not based on the numbers. But you throw in Moss, Hansen, and $7 mill and the Sox could've at least gotten some bullpen help.

The other factor for Jason Bay, however, is going from the pressure-free Pittsburgh Pirates to replacing one of the best right handed hitters of all-time in the middle of a pennant chase.

But... then again, people thought Theo was crazy for trading Nomar...

Why the handwringing? He's on the downslide of his career and he's proven to be a malcontent. The Sox will be fine.

There you have it. You do this move in the OFFSEASON, not in a pennant chase.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Pirates will get Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen from the Red Sox for their part in the Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay deal.

We thought LaRoche would be the one top prospect the Pirates wouldn't focus on, given the presence of Pedro Alvarez and Neil Walker as potential long-term third basemen. Instead, he's the one top talent they get. The inclusion of Moss and Hansen when they could have been used in other deals makes this an especially unimpressive deal for Boston. One could argue that Bay is as valuable as Ramirez once defense is taken into account, but there are certainly plenty of AL teams glad that the Red Sox made this trade.

Red Sox giving up way too much. And InTheEnd88, I completely agree with you; Manny could handle the spotlight pretty well - I don't think we can say the same about Bay. He'll be filling some enormous shoes.

Wait a minute. I thought Brandon Moss was "useless"?

And yes, :censored: the man that helped bring you two World Championships. :censored: him!

Please be for Matt Kemp! :D

edit: ugh... :censored:, I don't want Bay.

You must be high as fu*k to want Matt Freaking Kemp over ManRam. I'd rather take an angry, slumping, and disgruntled Manny over Kemp any day (And you wanted Manny out because he was angry, and disgruntled? Matt Kemp has ALL of those same issues).

But personally, Boston trading Manny, and Kemp not moving at all is a huge disappointment. He's certainly no Manny, and he certainly is good.

And too bad i gotta HATE Manny ow. Oh well, either way LA is still either missing the playoffs all togather or getting swept in the first round.

Manny Ramirez has reportedly accepted the traded with the Dodgers following the stipulation that the Dodgers would decline his options for 2009 and 2010.

Ha-ha, it looks like Manny will be cashing in this off-season, especially since his agent is that a-hole Scott Boras.

Please, don't make me argue with you over freaking Brandon Moss. Of course I would rather have him than not have him, but if you have a guy like Mahay on the table, you have to do that. Here it is a case of massive overpaying when you shouldn't have to get rid of him. It's not like I'm devastated he's gone. I thought you would understand that.

You tell me one deadline deal Theo has done (besides Nomar) that has worked out well. One. And, like ITE88 mentioned, I don't want to go through a half a season watching Jason Bay suck against the AL pitchers while Manny could be hitting .330 with up to 15 homers the rest of the way for us.

w00tness, my understanding is that that was the condition no matter where Manny was traded, and yes, it's all Bora$$'s fault.

Give me the cost controlled 24 year old with 30/30 potential in Fenway any day of the week. Of course he's no Manny... but right now, he's 24 years old and nowhere near his prime. The day Kemp's issues include ducking elite pitchers by faking injuries, then he'd be level with Manny in that category.

Not like it matters, that deal wasn't happening anyway.
