2009 MLB Season Thread

I don't know if anybody here saw the play at the Cardinals @ Pirates game a few weeks ago where a fan tumbled over the railing near 1B reaching for a foul ball cutting up his face and giving a scare as far as neck injuries go. The story is that Albert Pujols and the Pirates 1B coach Perry Hill rushed over to the scene immediately. Albert mostly helping the man, Hill comforting the man's son. That son was there for his 21st birthday all the way from Buffalo and has Down's Syndrome. His dad just wanted to get that ball for him. It was purely a coincidence (or more perhaps), but Pujols has an adopted Daughter (his wife's biological daughter) who has Down's and does lots of charity work in that area.

Anyways, that's the lead up, and here's the follow up story, and I thought it was very much worth sharing. It's a recommended read, but if you can do it without tearing up a little, you're stronger than I.

Just another reason why Big Albert is one of my favorite players.

Agreed. Pujols simply makes it impossible for people to dislike him, it's why he's gonna be one of the the biggest legends the game has ever had once it's all said and done.

For the record, I wasn't posting so that we could all say Pujols was a great human being (which he is). I just thought the story on the whole was pretty darn moving, so I wanted everyone to have a chance to read it. Pujols is a pretty big part of the story, but there's plenty more to take out of it.

Absolutely but it's still nice to be reminded that not every athlete acts the average NFL player. It was a great story overall.

Not usually a big fan of obnoxious home run celebrations, but that Prince Fielder / Brewers thing after yesterday's walk-off was really effing cool. Could have done without the untucked shirt, but that looked like a lot of fun.

I don't have a problem with the celebration or the untucked jerseys, let them have their fun. The team stinks, they're playing out the string like everyone else, but at least they're still playing hard and haven't given up.

Oh I'm all for players having fun... part of the reason why I love TO's and Chad Ochocinco's celebrations so much. I just think a fat guy in an untucked shirt looks sloppy, that's all.

I think all the Brewers players untuck their jerseys after each win. I like that little ritual.

Speaking of teams playing out the string and not winning much, the Braves got swept, at home, by the Reds. How nice of them to drop out of contention just in time for football season.....

Well I'm done going to baseball games this year. The two Nats games I've been to, they've won in dramatic fashion: a two-out 10th inning single by Austin Kearns against the Rockies on 7/26/09 and yesterday a walkoff 2-run HR by Ryan Zimmerman against the Marlins.

Well if that's their thing, then fine, but the game wasn't over when he untucked his jersey.

Congratulations Pittsburgh Pirates, you've just clinched your 17th straight losing season!

And from what I understand that's a record. Congratulations Pirates fans. Persistence does indeed pay off. Just remember, The Browns are gunning for you.

Phillies downward spiral continues. Not worried though - the hitting always seems to experience short slumps, rather it be now than in October. Bullpen sucks right now, but should get some guys back and have roles better defined within the next couple of weeks.

Lidge is a problem, but Myers is going to test just how deep Cholly's loyalties are. I suspect that in the end, Manuel will do what's best for the team, and Lidge will find himself out of a role. If he isn't the closer, I wonder if he even makes the playoff roster?

Also of note, J.C. Romero may not be back, even if he is back, he won't be 100%. That leaves Eyre (who is not exactly dependable right now) and Trashner (though he has improved since his stint in the minors) as the lefties out of the 'Pen. If Pedro Martinez can pitch close to how he did last week, don't be surprised if J.A. Happ gets put in the bullpen come October, since he's left handed, and has playoff relief experience. Pedro's next couple of starts could really help define the post season pitching roster. Hell - the move could be made before October, with Jamie Moyer taking Happ's spot in the rotation - though I still doubt he makes the post-season roster.

(Expletive) the last couple years. What the hell? That don't mean (expletive). Last year is dead and gone. We play for today.

Those who desire consistency should also realize that Pirates = consistent. :oh:

Didn't the Browns just have a winning season a year or two ago?
