This has the potential for disaster. The league could quickly become a laughingstock if any games turn on bad calls.

It only has potential disaster if an owner publicly goes on blast after they think their team was negatively impacted by a penalty or lack of one.

If the 32 owners remain to have a united front and do not go public with their feelings, then it is just fans complaining. The majority of tickets are sold, people will still watch on TV. Think about it this way, we had members here who had not idea about a lockout.

IMO it will come down more to the media coverage. If it's all over the networks and ESPN, and they're running endless video of some idiotic call, it's going to turn the heat up on the league pretty quickly.

You don't suppose players won't complain? Or that they aren't already? Inability to correctly apply rules directly affects player safety.

That opens up another pandora's box for the league. A lot of people will see the poor jobs the refs are doing. What if they fine players for complaining about the refs? Can you really ask the players how they had felt about the reffing and expect them to be gleeful or robotic when responding about it? It's their living and if they feel their safety is at risk or the reffing is just inept and screwing up the game.

And the players are just like spectators. Each have no power to change it. It will be hard for the NFLPA to go on strike under the current CBA as it pertains to "union security".

Credit: Forbes

...when negotiating its next CBA, the NFLPA needs to work harder to negotiate more terms into the agreement protecting players? health and safety. There is not a single term in the current CBA dealing with the training and experience of the referees that take the field. As such, given this fact and that the CBA provides that the NFLPA can only strike over union security issues, the NFLPA is in a bit of a corner when it comes to playing under replacement referees this season.

The ref situation also shows more hypocrisy on the NFL's part. For the past several years they've expanded replay again and again, in effect saying that even the regular refs need more help. Now they want us to believe there will be a seamless transition to replacement refs? Right.

One week until the opener!

I honestly think this game can go either way. I think the Giants regressed and the Cowboys got better, but who knows what that accounts for.

What are your predictions for this game?

Giants 17, Cowboys 13

Cowboys - Lakers - LAFC - USMNT - LA Rams - LA Kings - NUFC

Wilson's been only handed the keys for 1 week. Unlike pass rookie quarterbacks, who could make mistakes and their jobs wouldn't be on the line because they were first round picks. Wilson leash is a short one, Flynn will get that job back, eventually.

I agree with the short leash; unlike an early pick like RGIII or Luck, there is no pressure to have Wilson be the franchise. But while it's occurred to me that Flynn will eventually be the starter, don't be surprised if Wilson does not make enough rookie mistakes to make this happen. He's just so smart and poised. Then again, maybe Carroll will realize that they just cannot get the ball in the middle because of his height...

Drew Brees is only an inch taller and his height doesn't seem to negatively affect his play.

You're right. What's crazy is all the talk of how tall Brees is. How many times do you hear about Michael Vick's height?

Their bios from espn.com:

Michael Vick

#7 QB

6'0", 215 lbs

Philadelphia Eagles

Drew Brees

#9 QB

6'0", 209 lbs

New Orleans Saints

I can count the times on one hand that I've heard Vick's height mentioned. Analysts rattle on about Brees' height all the time.

Not sure about that. Last year, the NFLPA had the ability to take note of the current situation, yet DeMaurice Smith and the Exec. Committee took money over everything and left issues like this on the side. Other issues include player safety regarding equipment, the ability to have an independent arbiter look at appeals for suspended players, and even more.

On Monday, The National Football Post went into some detail on how far apart the parties are.

Also on Tuesday, ESPN Radio interviewed NFL Referee Mike Carey.

While he is not in the room, but did detail their needs in the negotiation.

Oh well, at least Michael Brockers' contract was not as absurd as 1st Round contracts of the recent past. <_<

The NFL moved the trade deadline back two weeks to week 8. This is a good idea, week 6 was way too early imo. I think we'll see more deadline moves from now on.

And just curious, where is the NFL getting the replacement officials from?

Nine used this pre-season were also used the last time there was a lockout in 2001. One man retired from collegiate officiating in 1999, but worked the 2001 lockout and has come back in 2012.

Some work in the FCS or lower divisions (D-2, D-3, NAIA). Some come from the Arena League and UFL.

And there was the case in week 1 where they hired a guy who worked in the Lingerie League.

I've never truly appreciated how good normal NFL are, until we had referees call a holding call on the returner.

Please NFL, and NFLRA, get a deal done. These refs are terrible. I feel bad for them because they went from college, arena and lingerie ( ) games to the National Football League.
