I know I'm late to the party, but as far as the verticality 'problem', have you tried just taking the logo and doing a skew on the whole thing? Angle the whole thing slightly back to the left or slightly forward to the right. I like your update, but the one thing it's missing that the original had in spades is ENERGY.
