I'm usually not much of a soccer fan, but I have really been watching the World Cup this year. That being said, I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me: Why are Italy's jerseys blue? I'm just curious as to the significance of that, since blue isn't a color on their flag. Thanks.

Blue is the colour of the House of Savoy, one of the former ruling houses of Italy. Pretty much all Italian national team sports wear blue.

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

EDIT: Fred beat me to the punch

Countries using different colors than what their flags are is kinda common....

EX: Netherlands wearing orange (for the House of Orange, which is the royal family)...Japan wearing blue (it's just used with the soccer team...other sports vary it up a bit beyond the traditional red/white we'd think they'd wear)....Australia using green/gold or gold/navy instead of blue/red...New Zealand using black....

The wildest one was the old West German colored jersey for soccer...for the longest time (around 1950 through I believe the 1994 World Cup..possibly the 1996 European Championships), they had a green jersey...this was done because the first team that would play Germany after WWII was Ireland.

That one was easy pickings for someone who does WW1 Research like me. ;)

There's a reason for Oz going Green/Gold and New Zealand going all black.

Australia wears green and gold because it's the colours of the Australian national flower, the Golden Wattle. The Golden Wattle is on the Australian Coat of Arms.

As for the Kiwis, here's a good article on how the nickname "All Blacks" came to be.

Considering how new Zealand's most important national sides (Rugby and Cricket) use the All Blacks name and colour scheme, the rest of the national teams just follow suit.

Thanks guys, I never realized there was that much significance behind the colors of a team's jerseys. And I never even thought about the Netherlands, Japan, or Australia, so thanks for the info.

If you want to know what jerseys each team is wearing, then search "colour" on the World Cup site. Most of the hits are the game previews, which have the "colours of the game" section, which shows what jerseys, socks, and shorts each team should be wearing. It has been accurate in most instances. I think the only time it was wrong was in the Ecuador-Costa Rica game, when they said Costa Rica would be wearing red, when they actually wore white.

Every other country represents their Football Association/Federation.

Poland always has been wearing their coat of arms on the shirts. This year Puma added the new logo of football association as well on the right side but I don't like it personally, the shirt looks too crowded.

i always wondered why some countries like Japan dont wear the actual colours of their country

You might want to, say, read the rest of this thread. Some of those questions are answered already.

I just noticed today that England has each jersey personalized with the date and opponent on them. Kind of a nice touch if you ask me. But I had not seen anybody else make any mention of it.

Beckham

I found this older photo with a better close up-

England Jersey

similar to as mentioned above with the Dutch (flags) and Aussies (text) and a few other teams

I went through the pictires of the group stage and I notced that the following teams have their shirts personalized: England, Sweden, Portugal, Australia, Japan, France, Netherlands. I hope didn't miss anything.

And the balls are different for every game as well.

Italy wore white shirts today with their blue jersey. Who makes the uniform combo decisions, is it the team themselves or FIFA?

I suppose you meant shorts. This is not combo . Blue jersey - white shorts - blue socks is the traditional kit of Italian team. The football teams don't have to match the shorts with the shirt and personally I hate all-white or all-yellow kits.

Ya I did mean shorts, lol, and I know Italy usually wears this colour combo, but for their first 3 games they wore all blue (which I found odd for them). Just curious as to why they did and who decided on that...
