In late breaking news:

Uppsala-Hammers-sm_by_rezland_zpslww0kq6

Uppsala gets:

  • LB Carl Carlsson ® 49 Tackles, 6 Sack, 3 Int
  • WR Drew Pearman (3 yrs) 162 Rec, 1579 yds 21 TD
  • CB Homer Williams ® 24 tckl, 14 pass breakups, 3 Int
  • 1st Round Pick 1969
  • 1st Round Pick 1970

Goteburg-Trolls-small_70s_by_rezland_zps

Goteborg gets

  • TE Toby Watts (4), 9 TDS),
  • Former OPOY(4) Bjorn Bjornsson (4 years, 4493 yards, 47 TD's)
  • LB Noah Wahlstrom (3) 289 Tackles, 41 TFL, 8 Sacks, 3 Int, 1 TD)

Goteburg gets the blocking TE they need for the Veer in 6'4" Toby Watts, along with the All Sweden running back Bjorn Bjornsson, who was back in form, with another 1000 yard season and 18 rushing TD's, after a season ending knee injury in 67 looked to end his career. The third piece of the puzzle is a run stopping LB in Noah Wahlstrom, younger brother of Helsingborg QB Zak Wahlstrom, Noah set single season tackle and TFL in 68 with the Hammers, but was set to receive a pay raise, and with the new 5-2 Defense Wahlstrom was expendable.

Uppsala gets younger, and like Stockholm a year earlier takes a cover LB and another offensive weapon in Pearman, to give their young QB an additional target. CB Homer WIlliams out of Jacksonville U gives the Hammers a lock down corner, and with 2 first round picks in 69, look for additional moves to add help at DT and OG.

Looking great! However, I must tell you that the Lund logo is the Saab car company logo.

From the firstoriginal post:

"Lund beat out Malmö strictly due to the support of SAAB AB, and a guarantee of travel expenses paid for the other five teams visiting Lund"

That it is... and for good reason. When the league was formed, SAAB AB put its support behind Lund, which allowed Lund to get in the league, and open Skåne to American Football, as well as using the Skåne Griffen (Gripen) as their Mascot. SAAB signed a 5 year contract with the team, and an option to extend through 1975.

With the current sporting state of the team, and a bid from Linkoping (home of the SAAB jet factory, there are signs that the team will lose support from theauto side of SAAB, with a possible move to Linköping if their expansion bid fails.

Lund_70s_by_rezland_zpsppukvfqa.png could potentially become Linkoping-Jets_70s-50-_by_rezland_zpsy5a

With just over 6 hours left, it looks like Oslo and Copenhagen in a landslide. with Västerås and Orebro rounding out the top 4.

Saab AB has a sponsorship meeting scheduled for noon Monday in Linköping to decide on the status of Lund's continuing in the SFAF. The current mood suggests Linköping take all Saab funding. Waht happens to the Lund team is up in the air, but it is likely most of the Lund squad will move to Linköping and the remainder will combine with the Lund players left behind.

Contracts would have to be honored, so there is a chance Lund becomes a power team in the Second Division .

More after the meeting tomorrow.

Sat and watched Vikings last night and looked at a lot of the Dragon Prows... for today, I have a great idea how to do it... but 1969, how complex were logos, in the real world Dolphins Patriots and Raiders had pretty complex logos, And even then, they were not anything like today's are.

Stockholm - SFAF Press Conference

This afternoon, the SFAF announced sweeping changes to the soon to be 5 year old league.

Anders Bergström took the microphone first, and as the founding director, rightly so. His first order of business was to announce that the SFAF would no longer be the Swedish Forbundet Amerikan Fotboll, but would now be the Scandinavian Federation of American Football, and would continue to maintain its corporate offices in Stockholm, across from Olympic Stadium, where the league was founded in 1964.

The second order of business was to introduce Anders Ekdahl as the first commissioner of the SFAF.

Ekdahl, comes to the league from ten years with the Premier Fotboll League in Stockholm, and his office moves a total of two city blocks to SFAF headquarters. His background is in growing the Swedish Association Football federation and putting in place new relegation/elevation programs that have enhanced the strength of Swedish Association Football (Soccer). Additionally, his leadership in establishing a loan/purchase program has given the Swedish league a boost on competition level, with top level european mainland players being loaned to the league, and developing players finding an easier path to the top tier leagues in Britain, Germany and Italy. It is this skill set that will allow the SFAF to grow and develop players.

Ekdahl announced that the recent expansion had no less than 15 cities apply for the next 2 franchises, and that pushed forward the timetable on bringing the non affiliated leagues into the SFAF family. And the next step in Swedish Football,a second division, and relegation.

Much as Ekdahl streamlined Swedish Soccer's system, he put in place a system that would give the current SFAF teams a better chance of staying in the league, and relegation would not be based on a 1 year window, but a 3 year rolling window, and the teams with the worst performance over the prior three seasons, would play for the right to stay in the top division.

The second division will consist of 10 teams as will the third. And the next round of Expansion will come from this Division, as well as teams having the opportunity to earn on the field promotion to the SFAF.

Details will be released during the 1969-1970 off=season, as no teams will play in after the 1969 season.

Expansion Cities were the next on the table:

Both Bergstrom and Ekdahl shared the podium as the two cities were announced. For Bergstrom it was proof that his idea of a strong league in Europe was possible, and looked like a kid in a candy store as Oslo was announced as the first foreign expansion team.

Oslo beat out 13 other cities, and due to an alliance with Bergen, had rebranded, and chose the Viking Ships as the inspiration for their new team name.

OSLO DRAGERS (Oslo Dragons) will wear Green, Gold and Burgundy, a major departure from the National colors worn by both Oslo and Bergen squads.

(team uniforms will be announced later in the offseason) but a glimpse at the team helmets Drager_zpsrqo66aey.png

The Second City is Copenhagen Denmark, we will cover the Copenhagen News next.

The Copenhagen Dilemma

by Olaf Riis

Copenhagen - What was an overwhelming victory for Copenhagen has become a power struggle, within Dansk AFK. Founders Bjarne Mikkelsen, and Lars Jepsen built a powerhouse capable of competing with the lower tier SFAF teams like Lund, and Stockholm without the American talent of their Swedish contemporaries, yet the financial backers of the bid want to blow up the team and build it over the way Helsingborg was built.

Jepsen has taken to the Danish press to state the case for strengthening an already formidable team with American Talent. Mikkelsen, went so far as to say the team could compete with only Danish players, but backers of the bid have turned the team into some sort of Nationalistic flag bearer for Denmark, and want the team to carry Danish colors, and become the Copenhagen Royals (København Kongelige).

Dansk AFK "the Danes" reflect the hard upbringing of Mikkelsen and Jepsen. Both were young teens who fought with Holger Danske (Danish Resistance group) during WWII, and saw the world in a very black and white point of view. You played to win, and never backed down from a stronger foe. Never affraid to adapt a new tactic if it would make the team better. To the backers they were seen as crude and archaic. A relic of a time many would prefer to forget, specifically those who went along to keep their money and perceived power that went with it.

Dansk AFK was named for Holger Danske, and the crude helmet decal was based on the statue of Denmark's King Aurthur, Holger Danske. The founders wanted to keep their team and image intact.

Cyan and Plum are not exactly what you envision when you think Denmark, Red and White are, but the backers led by LEGO's Ragnar Christensen want the team to represent the modern democratic Denmark, not the wartime militia, or the viking age, after all, there were now three teams with viking imagery in their brand, and a 4 pointed crown was a much more dignified symbol of Denmark.

Below are both the current Dansk Helmet, as well as a red and white version that was developed to appeal to Christiensen, and the other backers.

The name and official colors will be decided upon in the next two weeks, but don't expect the debate over the name to go away if Royals wins the day. Check back for more news from Copenhagen.

Breaking News: Stark and Rosenberger return to the AFA

by Carl Lund

Stockholm - After a season of rumors regarding Mr Gavle, news broke earlier this evening that the SFAF's first super star is returning to the AFA with the Seattle Grizzlies. After proving his time in the AFA was not indicative of his abilities, Rosenberger has signed to return and prove to the Americans that his stellar performance was not a product of a second tier league. There is no news on what if any compensation the Goats will receive for JR, but with new Commissioner Anders Ekdahl in the USA, be sure the Goats and the SFAF will benefit from this move.

Eskilstuna's Stark was the second player to jump back to the AFA for a reported $80,000 contract. Stark was responsible for a vastly improved Defensive unit, and the top ranked rushing defense in SFAF. The question becomes, can Eskilstuna continue to improve without the hugely talented Stark.

Ekdahl is expected to make a statement Sunday as to the details of the moves. One question is the ownership stake JR took at the end of the 67 season.

More information to come.

That logo is SWEET...in the blue-on-blue, it kinda looks like what I tend to imagine the ghost of Hamlet's father would.

With all that said, I think Spøgelser (Ghosts-if Cleveland doesn't mind), Ånder (Spirits), or Fantomer (Phantoms) could work out with that design.

PRESS RELEASE

26.05.1969

Miami, FL, USA - From the office of SFAF Commissioner Anders Ekdahl

It is with great pride that the SFAF announces the signings of John Stark and Johnny Rosenberger with the AFA.

When Anders Bergström conceived of a Swedish Football league, it was his dream to one day see stars make their way to the AFA. That day has come, and with it a formalized agreement with the AFA in how the teams are compensated for developing players who will one day make an impact in the AFA.

In the agreement signed yesterday evening, players under contract in one league may move between leagues in exchange for a transfer fee that it set at a certain percent of the player's salary (their new one or their old one, whichever is larger).

The percentage will be scaled according to the importance of the position.

  • Quarterbacks 10%
  • Running Backs, Receivers 9%
  • Defensive Backs, Linebackers 8%
  • Offensive & Defensive Line 7%
  • League MVP, OPOTY, DPOTY +1%

With the signing of both the 2 time MVP Rosenberger and Defensive Player of the Year (DPOTY) Stark, the SFAF has for the first time proven capable of developing, or in these two players cases, reclaiming lost glory. It is with great pride we wish these two the best of luck in the AFA.

With current expansion, as well as an additional 2 teams for 1971 the league is moving to a 12 game season for 1968, and a 14 game season in 1971. This rapid growth brings with it a need for more Americans to keep the level of play at an acceptable level, without diluting a growing but very young talent pool. It is for that reason that the league has signed an additional agreement with the AFA to increase the number of American players from 8 to 11 for the 1969 season.

There will be dissenters who feel that this is taking opportunity from deserving Scandinavians, but in 4 seasons the league has grown by 66%, with a 35 man roster and 8 of those being Americans.

In 1965 there were 162 Swedish players in the league.

With an additional 2 games for 69, each roster will expand to 38, with 270 Scandinavians playing in the top division of Football in Scandinavia.

American Football in Scandinavia is strong, and it is only a matter of time before Swedish, Danish or Norwegian players begin making their way to the AFA, and this week's signings have paved the way.

- Anders Ekdahl

Commissioner

The Copenhagen Dilemma Solved

by Olaf Riis

According to an unnamed source, Anders Ekdahl made a call to both sides of the Copenhagen Dilemma early today, and made it clear the selection was contingent upon a unified program, and the article he read via telex did not give him a good feeling about the odds of Copenhagen successfully bringing the team into the league. After the Lund/Linköping mess, he was in no mood to deal with petty squabbles over naming the squad.

The bid financiers, led by Ragnar Christiensen met with team management for six hours today and worked out a compromise that would keep the "Spirit" of the teams name, while removing the stigma of a name born from a dark period in Denmark's history. For Mikkelssen keeping the image of Holger Danske alive was the last sticking point.

Christienssen and the board wanted the logo as well as the name gone, but due to the timeline given by the league, ceded the request of the two men who put Copenhagen in a position to earn the bid. Lars Jepsen, the teams General Manager was satisfied with the decision, and felt that the name was not as important as the helmet decal that bore the image of Holger Danske.

Mikkelssen emerged from the meeting carrying the helmet of the KØBENHAVN ÅNDER

It remains to be seen how well the two parties can work together.
