I was unaware of this

I was talking to a fan at a Jays game from Cleveland and he informed me that the Cleveland Rockers moved before the 2004 season... I guess it really is dead if their own residents think teams have left when they haven't

The WNBA was doomed to fail from the start. Sure it was a good idea a pro sports league for women, however outside of the olympics most sports are primarily watched by men and most men aren't going to watch women's sports.

what you just said pretty much sums up why most major womens sports are doomed.

with that said, if there was a major womens hockey league equal to say the WNBA, i might watch it. emphasis on "might watch".

what hurts the wnba is, when they start play its usually in the summer. by then, most people are done watching basketball.

The Utah Starzz moved to San Antonio a few years ago (I can't remember when). Of course they were one of the original teams but left because they lacked fan support. They were owned by Larry Miller, who owns the Jazz. Can't say I'd fault him on moving the team, since it was becoming a big money hole.

Even in basketball crazed SLC the Starzz weren't getting the support. But when you continually finish in the bottom of the league (they DID make the playoffs their final year here), it's hard to build fan support.

Um, Chris.... the Rockers are no more, according to wnba.com.

It's pretty sad when a guy who does ample research on a league doesn't even notice one of the teams is no longer!

(When the hell did this happen????)

I believe they did leave in 2004, cause I remember hearing about it.

I think it was end of '03. It was right around the time the WNBA announced it was moving away from the single-entity ownership model to an individually-owned one. The Gunds decided to get out, and the league couldn't find an owner for the Rockers. Thus, no more team.

In a way, this is also how Connecticut (OK, the Sovereign Indian Nation of Mohegans) got a team. They bought the Orlando Miracle from the Magic, then brought them here and pinned on them the worst corporate-tie-in-nickname of all time. In case you didn't know, the Mohegans here operate a casino called the Mohegan Sun. :cursing:

I still think Hartford should've gotten the team.

How many people do they get at Sun games? From my knowledge of Connecticut, Mohegan Sun is quite a hike from New Haven and Hartford?

I think the team draws about 5,000 per game at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Arena holds between 9,500 & 10,000, so you're looking at half capacity.

The WNBA overestimated the fan attraction of women's basketball in Connecticut. Nutmeggers like women's COLLEGE basketball, not PRO basketball. I think Uncasville (where the casino is) is about an hour from Storrs, where UConn is. The casino is about an 1 1/2 hours from Hartford and New Haven, but less than an hour from Providence.

They did the same thing here. They thought that Utah had such strong ties with the Jazz that it'd only be logicial that we fans would support a WNBA team.
