RickV
Does anyone know if these helmets were ever actually used on the field?http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...5145212274&rd=
WJMorris3
I doubt they were worn in 1960. The Vikings did not exist until 1961. In any case, if we believe Football Uniforms Past and Present, and the Helmet Project, those helmets did not exist.
RickV
Yeah, that's what I figured too, just wanted to confirm it. Wanted to see if by some chance somebody with a thorough knowledge of Vikings history could confirm or deny it.
Nick 1733
I'm not keen on Vikings history but I am very knowledgable when it comes to NFL helmets history. That helmet was never worn by the team, ever. It wasn't even a prototype.
stimpy
Yeah that's probably some 'pop-warner' team helmet.

winters in buffalo
Wow, that's horrid. Even if it was a prototype, who in thier right mind would ever let it out in public?
winghaz
This Viking fan calls that a throw-up helmet rather than throwback helmet.
stimpy
This guy says it was only used in the preseason, it could be possible but it's Ebay so probably not.
Nick 1733
This guy says it was only used in the preseason, it could be possible but it's Ebay so probably not. Okay, that is not true, just so you know.I've done thousands of hours of research on the history of NFL Helmets. The Minnesota Vikings were and NFL Expansion Team in 1961.This guy claims this was worn in the Pre-Season of 1960, a year before the team came to exist. The Vikings only helmet ever is the current one they use, the only changes over the years have been on the facemask, the size of the logo decal, and of course their recent change to a metallic shade of purple. spyboy1
Just to add my 2¢, I have lived in Minneapolis for over 30 years and have attended quite a few sports memoribilia shows in the area and have not ONCE ever seen or even heard a reference to a white helmet with purple horns. I am quite sure that is the history of the helmet. The facemasks going from grey, to white, to purple.
OnWis97
I think I have seen that somewhere. I think I read that it was never used anywhere, but was considered before they settled on purple. I think the horn was placed more like the actual version, though.I agree with the above comment of:
Magus
that thing for real? im going to laugh when a poor and unfortunate soul pays 65,000 for a non-viking throwback helmet.
jamesjduncan
It kinda reminds me of the Eagles helmet from the early 70's, i guess because of the white. But that Vikings helmet looks like an abortion! And no, it was never used (thank God).
DrBear
1. The guy uses Mike Stanhope's helmet site, which doesn't show said helmet.2. I've seen helmets like this used by Lawrence University in Appleton (also the Vikings) in the 1970s, but those were in blue and white with no gold.3. It's a modern helmet, not a game-used one; note the triangle-R Riddell logo at the back.

BombSkwad
I could swear I've heard about this helmet, but have never seen anything to refute the claim. If anything, the purple on the horn should be darker....
misterhabs
I believe it WAS considered as a prototype prior to the team's first season in 1961. I don't think there was ever an actual helmet made however, and, as has already been established, he's just selling a mock-up mini of the proposed design.Ben
