Olympic Stadium demoliton would be costly

MONTREAL (CP) - Demolishing Montreal's problem-plagued Olympic Stadium would cost more than $500 million and take at least 2 years if the provincial government ever decided to do it, a report says.

Television network TQS found the conclusions in two studies completed for the Olympic Installations Board and obtained by the broadcaster under the Access to Information Act.

The first study was done in 2002 and said that demolishing the stadium would take time because of its unique design. The engineering firm that did the study suggested chopping the building into concrete blocks.

A second study said if the stadium was demolished, it would take about 2 years to complete the job.

The stadium has been plagued with structural problems and high costs since it was built for the 1976 Olympics.

With that kind of money, you could have built a new stadium for the Expos.....

I saw, I came, I left.

Obviously the Canadian Mafia is in charge of demolition. That number is obscene. Cut into blocks? I doubt that it is so complicated that it can't be imploded.

It is quite the unorthodox shape... plus you have the world's tallest inclining tower attached to it, and the Montreal Biodome mere feet away.

Ahh, ok. Thank you for clarifying the terrain. That explains a little.

That is still an obscene amount of money. I'm assuming that the $500 million price tag is in Canadian dollars... but that is still more than $400 million US. Compare that to the $67 million US it cost to demolish the Kingdome on March 26, 2000.

ok this might work. just collapse the tower into the stadium. bam, yoou've eliminated the tower and taken out part of the stadium as well. another thing, what dose the tower do? dose it hold the semi retractible roof cover or what?

I can't imagine that they would demolish the Olympic Stadium... We (and I mean "les Québécois") are still paying for that stadium, we might as well do some money with it. I know there are still some venues in the big-O, but I can't tell exactly how many.

The tower is now a part of the Montreal skyline and can be observed from far away. And as CC said, it is surrounded by other olympic facilities (the biodome was the velodrome) so there might be some complex work to be done to insure that demolishing it wouldn't affect the other buildings.

If anybody comes to Montreal, please take time to go to the top of the tower. The view of the metropolitain area is simply gorgeous.

But if the do crush it, I want a concrete block ;)

I've been to the top of that, very nice views. But, I preferred the ride UP and DOWN the "Escalator" than the view. :)

Yeah, carry on the great Expos Tradition. If it wasn't for all the press, Montreal wouldn't even know they were gone.

I'd have done it for less! :D
