Bleujayone
I just finished watching "The Natural" again. I love that movie. One of the things I really liked was the ficticious "New York Knights". I liked everything about it; the name, the main logo, the "NY" cap logo, the letterhead, the colors, all of the patches, but especially the "thunderbolt" patch, it all had a very realistic 1939-era feel to it. You could easily beleive such a team existed. The designers of the film say they took inspiration from both the New York Giants and New York Yankees of that era. So I was wondering, if the Knights really did exist (and for the purpose of this thread the New York Mets did not exist) how might the entire identity of the Knights be updated for the 21st Century?I'm going to try this one out myself, but I thought some of you more talented artists might want a go at it too. Below I posted links to everything I could find to help. I only wish I could have found an away jersey, but if it helps, they were grey and said "New York" in the same font as the "Knights" on the home jerseys....................................................Knights Basball Cap: (for the record, the cap is navy blue)http://www.onlinesports.com/images/eff-nyk39c.jpgKnights Home Jersey: http://www.onlinesports.com/images/eff-nyk39h.jpgTeam Jacket w/ main logo:http://www.onlinesports.com/images/eff-nyk39j.jpgUniform Patches:http://toonstation.zoovy.com/category/patc...henaturalmovie/Baseball Card:http://www.starwares.com/product_detail.as...record=0ℑ=T-Shirt w/ large main logohttp://www.stallanddean.com/index.cfm?page...2=7820&cid=2904Knights/Roy Hobbs Pennanthttp://shop.store.yahoo.com/national-pasti...yhobnewyor.html We all have our little faults. CB27
One of the first concepts I ever did was based loosely on The Natural. Amazingly, I still have this one. I made it back when everyone was still wondering where the Expos would move. I suggested Nashville and did this concept, the Nashville Knights. While it is set in a different city from the movie, the movie was still the basic inspiration.Nashville Knights
CC97
If the New York Knights were real they would've moved west in 1958 --- Chris Creamer Founder/Editor, SportsLogos.Net "The Mothership" • News • Facebook • X/Twitter • Instagram
jkrdevil
If the New York Knights were real they would've moved west in 1958 Yea, my guess would be that now they would be the San Francisco Knights. The Natural is a great movie. This year for my senior paper for english i read and did a paper on the book. I can honestly I like the movie better. Not because of the ending but because it has a better overall story line (with Iris being Roy's girlfriend when he was young).
BallWonk
The Knights, still owned by Pop Fisher's estate, wouldn't have had the money to move west in 1958. Stuck in New York, the Knights would have experienced a renaissance as New Yorkers, berift of their other two NL teams, flocked to the Knights in the 1960s. The uniforms would have remained basically unchanged since Roy Hobbs' time, but the influx of cash and the league-wide switch to polyester would have caught up with the Knights in the early 1970s. They'd have been exceedingly ugly for about 14 years, but then in the mid-1980s, after a threatened move to Washington fell through, new local ownership would have gone back to the classic look of the 1930s-1960s. The script would have been cleaned up a bit, and pinstripes dropped to differentiate from the Yankees. The team's unofficial lightning-bolt patch would have become formalized as a part of the team logo (see the road script) at about that time, with a commemorative "Wonderboy" 9 patch worn permanently at home. The team's blue lightened from navy to true blue at about the same time that the Yankees went the other way, from navy to midnight.Over the course of the 1990s, the Knights would have experimented with uniform changes, but the innovation would have been limited to the road set. The vest came in with the 2000 season, when the Knights won the Crosstown Series in five games for the franchise's first championship (they last reached the Series in 1986, losing to the Red Sox in seven games). After the championship, the Knights would have initiated another era of uniform stability, keeping the now-iconic look of the 2000 championship team, whose merchandise sales went crazy in 2001, especially as people across the country turned to Knights caps and shirts to express their solidarity with New York after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. The Knights' repeat victory over the Yankees that October, in a seven-game series widely regarded as the best fall classic since 1991, possibly since 1924, cemented the Knights uniforms as the look of New York. pooter
Wow! I like the whole scheme. And the story went along well also. But the best is the #9 patch. Great work.
chipper4
Ballwonk,Incredible work!!!! The story, the uni's and especially the #9 patch. I think I speak for alot of people when I say that The Natural is one of the greatest sports movies of all time. I doubt you would've ever seen Bump Bailey wear a Roy Hobbs patch though. Bump hated that over the hill country bumpkin!!!
joebass123
great post and concept, ballwonk.although, i think somewhere between 98 to 03 they would've incorporated black into their color scheme. www.joseflorenz.com

PackerBadger
Whooo! Red Sox won in '86! Thanks to the last out made by Bill Buckner! Not Bill Buckner. Dave Stapleton, who was Buckner's defensive replacement for most of the season, since he could field better than Buckner even when Buck was healthy, fielded the last ball and just beat Mookie Wilson to first base for the last out. Bleujayone
Well, here's my effort. Basically I sharpened the letterhead, I kept the thunderbolt patch as/is, I took off the pinstripes, and made the white a more cream color like the movie. I also took the New York Knights logo from the defunct Arena Football team and changed the colors to match. It does kinda look like they took the movie's logo for inspiration. In any event i made that the patch for the other arm to replace the centenial patch. The navy and burnt orange have been brightened to look more like the New York City flag, and the "NY" on the cap has been modernized.First try anyway, if it gets a good reaction I'll try out the road & alternate unishttp://photobucket.com/albums/b77/Bleujayo...t=NYKnights.jpg We all have our little faults. FiddySicks
I think I speak for alot of people when I say that The Natural is one of the greatest sports movies of all time. No sir. You are wrong. The Natural is not a "sports movie". It is a movie about goods triumph over evil. It just happened to have baseball in the storyline. Pop it in and watch it again and youll know what i mean. And if you dont believe me take a college filmography class, put that The Natural was the "Greatest sports movie of all time" and see what grade youll get. Needless to say i got torn a new A hole for doing that. On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) pauly07
I'm of the school of thought, Buc, that a movie is what you take from it.The Natural can be a good baseball movie or a good allegory. It's either about an awesome athlete finally achieving his potential. Or David defeating Goliath. It's one of the nice things about art. It's subject to interpretation. pauly07
I wasn't planning on it, because you can't be taught how to interpret art.
pooter
Whooo! Red Sox won in '86! Thanks to the last out made by Bill Buckner! *sigh* Most of New England thinks that the 1975 World Series ended with Carlton Fisk's HR in game 6. They think if they keep telling themselves that over and over for 30 years that it will come true too.
bulldogbarks55
Great work, Ballwonk. How about doing an alternate and a bp set. You could incorporate the "NY-bolt" emblem into the bp set. And how about a sleeved grey uniform with "New York" on the front. Note- Bailey wore #7 in the movie. Sorry, Blue Jay, comparing your effort to Ballwonk's, you unfortunately, come in third. I don't think the wordmark and the cap script need "updating." And you need front numbers on the jersey. The player's name should be arched and in a more plain block font. Plus #9 would be retired by the Knights by now.The positives are the logo, the patch and the cream-colored home uniform. As they say, "Back to the drawing board!"
