NHL 3rd jersey project

I got bored last week and started this project, having just finished the other night. I thought I would post what I came up with, and see what you all think before fading back into the background of the forums (until I come up with something else).

There are currently 11 teams that don't have alternate jerseys in the NHL, and 11, while prime, isn't a nice number. In addition, there are two teams that need their alternates updated (in my opinion). So here are the first three, starting with Vancouver, which is currently using a gradient-shaded design for some unknown reason, Dallas for obvious reasons, and Phoenix.

Canucks: Similar to the original current thrid. Resembles the original jersey but better. Nice job. Love the use of current Canucks Colors.

Stars: Amazing! That is a great idea with the starry D around the Texas with the logo inside. Just color in the inside of the D and bravo!

Coyotes: Great work. Nothing wrong and I love the use of alternate logos by the way.

Keep Going Dude! And Great job.

Canucks: Not bad, although I'm not a fan of the two different blues. Change the royal blue to one of the three you've alerady used and you've got something good.

Stars: Really, really nice. Incorporates a vintage Stars / Seals look with a new logo (and one that actually suits the team). Very nice.

Coyotes: Different, and actually done pretty nicely. I like the 'Yotes alt logo, but just as that -- an alt logo. I can't see it as a crest, but that doesn't look too bad at all.

Good job, troy!

CANUCKS: Pick one blue or the other, and you may have something. You may want to think about adding a "V" motif somewhere else besides the wrist striping. It's a letter that lends itself to being incorporated into designs, and it's the only major city in North America whose name begins with a "V". I am not, however, advocating a return to the huge "V" logos with the Team Germany colors from a couple decades ago.

STARS: Not bad. Why 5 stars? There are 6 players on the ice at one time, Texas is the Lone Star State. Not sure if there is a reason behind 5 stars. Either way, a kajillion times better than the Mooterus.

COYOTES: The most creative, but my least favorite. The striping on the sleeve does not look right with the sunburst effect stemming from the other side. And I would agree with the idea of more sand/cream, less white - using white makes the home/road issue very hard to solve, and would mean they couldn't wear these uniforms in a game - what would the opposition wear? Dark or white?

All in all, nice stuff.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

I agree that the Canucks one shouls stick to one blue. I love that old logo, so I like that you've used that for the crest.

I really don't like the Stars one. I don't get where a script "D" fits the team. They don't use script in any of their logos/wordmarks that I've seen. I do, however, like that you went to the older style striping like how they had it in the mid-late 90s.

The Phoenix one is very different, but I'm not really feeling it. I don't like the sunburst effect, especially because it's already in the logo. It'd be nice if they had another alt. logo to use, because that one doesn't lookr ight as the crest. It should just be a shoulder logo.

the canucks one i absolutely hate, maybe it is because of the colors you used are too vibrant, maybe change colors to darker and you got a winner

dallas: eh, not feeling it

phoenix, i like, i like, but the colors look a bit wierd.

The ideas I came up with, after much frustration, for Detroit, St. Louis, and Nashville aren't that great, so before I post them, I'll do Tampa Bay, Carolina, and Washington, just so you can be assured that I'm not a complete retard (you'll see)

I love that Lightning alt!!!! That is solid for sure. I like how it looks somewhat cartooney yet still like the original logo

don't say I didn't warn you...

OK, these three aren't the best, but I couldn't figure out a more dignified way to do the Red Wings, or at least one that wasn't simply a throwback. Detroit doesn't really need an alternate anyhow, but being the obsessive completist I am, I had to include it. As for the others, I couldn't bring myself to resist throwing a gradient (albeit a small one) in. I tried a few other options, but this was still the best of them. Maybe I'm in the minority on disliking the Nashville alt, especially the crest logo, and I'm not too fond of the skull logo either. I'm just not sure this version is much of an improvement. So here goes:

Not bad... I can't say I'm thrilled but at least you have creative ideas.

I like the Carolina one, but I'd use their primary logo. I like the Lightning logo you drew, it looks more cartoonish and superhero like. haha. The color is kind of ugly, though.

Please, please, please use the correct flags for the Hurricane logo if you are going to make it the primary. If you are going to fix their jerseys, you should also correct their logo.

Please help me out here, I copied the logo from the alt. logo listed elsewhere on this site. If you mean to use the double flag for a semaphore warning for hurricane-force winds, I suppose you might have a point, but design-wise I think it might make it a bit busy. I tend to like simpler designs. But I'll play around with it a bit and see if I can't make a double-flag logo work.

Yeah, I'm not blaming you. You just took what they had. It would be nice to see a correct logo, though.

I really like that logo you made for the Preds, as a Lightning fan, I cant say I'm too fond of your uniform. I think the current Lightning primary without the scripts would be the best choice. For the Canes jersey, try putting the current primary on there, I think it's a better logo all around.

Lightning: Love the idea, but I'm not a fan of the execution. The logo itself looks too cartoony (unless you were going for the regular logo minus the wordmarks), and I'd add another color to the other side of the zig-zags... maybe black.

Hurricanes: Not too bad, and the "Carolina" on the bottom fits it, but the entire thing looks jumbled.

Capitals: Nice fusion of the old and new, but the wordmark doesn't make a good crest at all.

Detroit: It's... meh, I can't say I like this one at all. I like the wings on the sleeves, but it's just... meh.

Blues: I like the logo, I like the Pens rip-off, I don't like the different sleeve patterns though.

Nashville: Best of all of them. Nothing overly fancy, and a logo that matches the rest of the jersey. Very nice.

I applaud your efforts. Keep 'em coming. :D

Now why is this not the primary logo for the Lightning! Good job troy.

LIGHTNING: Not bad at all. The blue looks a little purple, but I like the lightning stripes. Consider making the bolts white (I've never seen gray lightning) and you could have something nice here.

HURRICANES: If you're going to do a border around the shoulder yoke, why does it stop where the chest meets the sleeves? Not sure about the placement of the numbers up on the shoulders; it looks out of place for a hockey sweater. And OMMF is right (grammar Nazis think alike) - the proper symbol for a hurricane is 2 flags (see Miami and Tulsa U.). That's not your fault; the 'Canes have been perpetrating this wrong for almost a decade now. But it's easily fixed.

CAPITALS: The two shades of blue are too close to work well on this jersey. A team in Washington named the "Capitals" should be red/white/blue, and proceed from there. Also, shoehorning the eagle patch, the stars and the player numbers so close together really crams up an otherwise workable look.

RED WINGS: Hey, we were warned. Honestly, if you make the wings a little more conceptual and less obvious, they might not be as gimmicky. Don't know if there's a better crest idea; I just don't like wordmarks on pro hockey sweaters.

BLUES: The logo is OK for a crest. The rest of the jersey is channeling the Penguins' "Hummingbird" uniforms, right down to the asymmetric sleeve designs. Not exactly the uniform I'd want to base a new concept on...

PREDATORS: Not so shabby. But does their wordmark have that style of lowercase "n"? I thought they used a traditional capital "N", which is what is throwing this off for me. I could be wrong on this...

Kind of a mixed bag, but very creative stuff, and nicely rendered.
