St. Louis Stallions

Hello all,

A few years back (about 1997) I picked up a purple hat at a closeouts only store bearing the logo and insignia of the "St. Louis Stallions" which had a gold colored horse head logo that seems similar to the current Broncos scheme.

Inside the band there is an NFL "Officially Licensed Product" logo. Can anyone clue me in as to the history of this squad?

Thanks!

The St. Louis Stallions were a failed expansion bid around that year of 1997. They have absolutely no history other than if they came into existence, the Rams wouldn't have won Super Bowl, at least in St. Louis.

The expansion bid was in 1993. The proposed ownership group included Walter Payton, but unfortunately the partnership blew apart a week or so before the NFL meetings. A substitute group was hastily formed, but to no avail...Jacksonville got the team instead. Here in St. Louis, the color scheme earned the local nickname "Purple Stallions". I always thought it interesting that just a few years later, the Broncos ended up with a logo that was quite similar.

thx, Fred

At one point, I even recall the unis being posted on here. Not bad, but the color scheme made me wonder if Vikings ownership would've pulled an Al Davis.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Also the flair around the tip of the beak is just flair that fleur de lis have sometimes source I am from NOLA.

The bid was for the 1995 season, though I'm sure it probably started around '93.

The logos are pretty bad, but I have always liked the wordmark a little bit, and kind of think the Rams original St. Louis wordmark logo (Rams under the Arch) was based off of it.

The uniforms IMO weren't too great. I think they had purple sleeves with three gold slashes on them. Numbers overlapped the slashes.

Vikings probably wouldn't have gotten too upset because the Stallions scheme had metallic gold, not yellow.

What about the Memphis Hound Dogs?  That was the proposed name of the Memphis NFL team (pre Titans).  Anyone got any pics on what they proposed??

Our bitter rivals, Logoserver, has some. :P

Wow, thanks a lot for the info. I didn't realize that the NFL marketed merchandise for franchises that were not yet awarded. Thanks again.

More likely the groups trying to get the franchises (the would-be owners mostly) marketed the merchendise in an attempt to create hype and fanfare.

I can't gurantee it, but I doubt the NFL would have endorsed a product that was not yet theirs.
