Another Isles concept

Enjoy C&C welcome as always. I always liked the fisherman and I thought this was a good way to use him. I kept the colors traditional but added silver (fog) because I needed a 4th color. I still haven't got a good alt. yet.

the long island on there just kind of looks pasted on there to cover something up... not sure why, but it doesnt look like it belongs.

Good idea on the concept. I would suggest maybe shrinking Long Island in the logo so it fits inside the ship wheel. At first i though it was a splash or something. Maybe also color in the fisherman's coat orange or something. Also, less stripes on the pants and then maybe we're talking. Good work though.

I think you need a wordmark on that logo. I agree with the previous poster saying the island just looks like a shield to cover something up.

I like that you kept the four stripes for the four Cup wins throughout the entire concept (don't know if that was intentional or not), but I'm not really a fan of the orange pants. I think that you could have navy blue pants with navy blue jersey and you would be fine

Thanks for the input so far...I did try with the island smaller and it didn't look quite right. The last element I added was the ships wheel to try and contain the image. Perhaps I should do a version sans the wheel. The idea is for the "Islander" to be rising from the island. I wanted to link the two. In the beginning the Islander was in front of the island an that looked odd as well. I stuck with the 4 stripes to be consistant. I do think it is odd that for some reason they are the only team in sports that I know of that "keep track" of the champinships they have won on their uniform. As a general question does anyone know the story behind it? I will work on some updated based on your suggestions.

I didn't want to just edit my original post. I like seeing the evolution of the design and I think others do to. It helps all of us with the creative process. So here is my upgrade. And I thank those for their suggestions.

i like both ideas a lot.

what if you were to try and use the original idea that included the wheel, but make the wheel as big as the grey circle. this way the ship wheel isnt too big. this may not be a popular idea, but just another way of looking at things. also, move down the name a little bit more as well.

That is one of the best isles concepts that I have seen in a long time. Good job. I think that you should try making a alternate logo for the sleve with the wheel thing in the fist post. Great overall though.

Personally, I like the 2nd one A LOT better. The first one with the wheel just looks too busy for my taste. Good job though!

I agree with 'brass' - the 2nd logo is much better. The wheel just wasn't working for me - keep it simple. Nice work!!!

Overall, seriously good concept with some potential.

First, some critiques, then a suggestion or two:

BREEZERS:

1. One set of breezers (pants) is all you need. They should go with home, road and alt sweaters. I don't know of any NHL team wearing more than one set with all their sweaters.

2. No need for striping on breezers. At least not 4 stripes. Even thinned out, they still look gaudy.

SWEATERS:

1. I liked the first logo, with the wheel. I LOVE the redesign. The Long Island looks more appropriate there and less like it was thrown in as a contrivance.

2. Like the colors much more with less silver. The Isles have done a lot with royal/navy and orange. Orange is a great contrast color, so long as it's not the main color.

SUGGESTIONS:

1. Move the sleeves stripes up toward the elbow; since all the details are at the ends of the sleeves, they'll get lost beneath hockey gloves.

2. The wheel logo would make a great shoulder patch, if coupled with: a lighthouse (see their old secondary logo that everyone likes so much); a harpoon; an "NYI" monogram; or something else to fill in the wheel. Not only would it dress up some otherwise plain sleeves, but give you an excuse to use the wheel, which is clever and would look smart.

3. Consider a new font for the "ISLANDERS" wordmark. It's very contemporary and clean, paired against a logo of a gruff old sea captain in his raingear. A little jarring when used next to each other.

4. A number/letter font that's a little sharper than what you used. I kinda like the one they use now; it's a little twist on the traditional standard block varsity. And lightyears better than the wavy crap they tried in 1996. Not sure how yours fits here.

That's it; my critiques and suggestions are relatively minor. Do what you want; overall it's a great concept, and it's that close to being extremely good. Nice work!

It's funny how others perceive the design aspects. The Long Island image was always a central part of the design, and most perceive it as stuck on. Hell I have been dabbling with a redesign for the Isles since I found this board in the summer, and the Island was always front and center. I am working on a alt logo but haven't found something that I like. I do want to incorporate the ships wheel if I can. My first look that never even got saved had the numbers in a ships wheel but it looked like a house league. It if made it on here the comments would not have been pretty. I love the orange pants they stay! While you are correct that the cuff stripes would get lost, since I have the stripes at the bottom I kept them there for consistency. One of the first incarnations was with chest and elbow stripes but with the logo's it was really busy. You might be right with the font the one I used was Asia. Because it was going into the Island I wanted something clean. I thought that achieved what I was going for. As for the silver it is just a minor accent color...and orange beard and he would look like this guy...

I created a secondary logo and an alt. I was looking for unique but not outlandish. I edited my updated look and added the secondary as a shoulder patch. I didn't think it warranted a complete repost. Enjoy!

I haven't shaved since Friday. Right now, orange beards are the place to be!

I'm not 100% sold on the orange pants yet, but if they work for you, then they work - period. Like I said, this has some real potential; I'm looking forward to seeing the next version.
