A quick message for all board members.

Recommended Posts

If you would like to use a signature currently in use and created by another member of these boards...

1) Please, ask permission before taking it.

2) Give some credit underneath the sig.

It is just the proper thing to do.

I understand that you might not like people using your sigs without giving credit but I know that many people (including the person who made my sigs) have said that we are free to use them. So I dont think this needs to be a message "for all boards members". Maybe it would of been better to talk to NW in private.

No because this is a problem (albeit a small problem) but a problem none the less...even art that is small enough for a sig but isn't really meant to be a sig will get taken by whoever decides to take it and used for whatever purpose they like without asking and without giving credit...I'm glad this was posted, I just hope everyone reads it...

- First, it's polite to ask someone before you use something of theirs, even if they have offered. Even if it is only a signature on a message board, someone took the time to sit down and make it.

- Second, if you get permission to, put it in your own photobucket account. Its sucks to run over your bandwidth limit because someone was 'borrowing' an image of yours to use

- Third, I don't think it's out of the question to request this in public. This is an issue that everyone should be aware of. It's nothing super serious, but it is a mattter of etiquette that some may not know about

also, if someone makes a sig that you want to use, please respect how the maker of the image wants it to be used.

Don't edit the images without seeking permission, and if the maker asks that you please not edit the signatures that they were nice enough to make for you to use, then you should respect that.

JQK, playing devil's advocate here, but supposing someone created a "similar" looking signature FROM SCRATCH, hmmm? :P

I will admit to using an edited version of "your" signature, but since you brought the issue up, I did the same thing you probably did - used logos from the site here and created "my" own so that I can rightfully say I created it myself, and use it how and where I see fit.

I apologize if my actions rubbed you the wrong way, JQK.

why doesn't the creator of the sigs but their name or logo in the corner of the sigs???

Thats what should be done. i know ICS a dn beatnick do that. They put their logo in the corner of their sig.

BTW, if i havent said so already, thanks for the use of the Sig Beatnick.

Shark puts his logo on his.

Anyway, Kinger's right. If you want to use it, ask permission. And, if it's been offered up as free for anyone use, at least have the courtesy to store it on your own space.

Since people are beginning to take issue with it, and I have noticed some getting rather monsterous, perhaps its time to mkae a formal request.

Please don't let your sig get too out large. yes, everyone has the option of turning them off, but that doesn't mean you can go and make a huge sig.

Please try to limit your images to 300 pixels or less for height, and a sig shouldn't be more than twice as large as an average post.

I'm glad the issue of sig size is finally getting a little more discussion. But out of respect to JQK, ICS and the others who make sigs, the size and content of the signatures is a separate issue. This thread was started and stickied because people were taking signatures without asking permission and/or linking to them from other people's caches rather than from their own picture repositories and/or altering the artist's original work to suit the user's needs against the wishes of the artist giving work away for free.

Maybe the issue of size needs its own stickied thread? I know it's come up a couple times in the past few months as some of the sigs have gotten way out of hand...

And for the record, what is an "average post"? The members post in extremes, from the comically brief ("Yeah!" "Me too!" "You suck!" and so on) to the comically wordy (amare comes to mind, but who am I kidding - I prattle on and on too). A strict height limit in pixels eliminates ambiguities and loopholes.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

Hmmm, I really hadn't thought about that. I've always thought that if the post contentreached the bottom of location info (on the left) it was about 'average'.

I post on other forums where they aer real nazi on sigs, you can have only one image, no bigger than 400x200, 3 lines of text, etc, etc. two strikes and you lose your sig privaleges.

I would rather just ask people nicely than set a bunch of rules about it
