murtaugh
http://section8chicago.com/news/press_detail.asp?prID=73I did the designs so I thought maybe getting some strict design feedback would be good. This might be the largest total investment (time/money/size) in one of my ideas I've ever had. NO GRAND
-kj
Wow. Just wow. I love the banners. The flag is great, too, though my suggestion would have been to lose the light blue outlines in the lettering, as it just looks odd to my eyes. That's amazing stuff. Even more incentive to make it to Bridgeview.(Are they going to release the schedule any time soon?!) Buy some t-shirts and stuff at KJ Shop! murtaugh
Give you an idea of the scale involved. I might mock one up with all the various other banners that we're aware of.(Are they going to release the schedule any time soon?!)Tuesday. HurricaneDavid
I'm not understanding something here. This banner is going to completely cover about a third of the seats in the stadium? Are there actually seats underneath where the banner is going to be displayed or is it an open area? If there are seats in that part of the stadium, are the fans going to be holding up that banner during the introductions? Seems like an enormous safety risk. murtaugh
I'd say it's more like 1/6th of the seats. What specifically would be the safety risk you'd be concerned about? Just going to a stadium is a safety risk...It's not much different than things college football teams do in the US, and one league team had a banner purchased by adidas a few years back that was about 3/4 this size of the team jersey, and it's used every so often in a similar manner. I'm curious what you think the overriding issue would be that stadium and club personnel haven't considered. NO GRAND
ProvidenceRI
So, let me get this straight. The soccer club dupes somebody/taxpayers (I don't know the facts on this stadium) into building a small soccer specific stadium just so that fans don't have to sit in an empty Soldiers Field, and then the club covers 1/6 of the seats with a banner? So, they build a new stadium and still can't sell it out?Lame. HurricaneDavid
I still don't get it. Is the banner going to be on top of people or is the banner going to be on top of empty seats? If it's going to be on top of people, I sure as hell wouldn't want to be the one right in the middle of that thing. Hasn't everyone seen a clip where a guy pulling the tarp over a field gets trapped underneath? I'm sure THOUSANDS of people underneath something like that is real safe. Soldier Field is used 10 out of 365 days in the year, they can't play there!
murtaugh
I still don't get it. Is the banner going to be on top of people or is the banner going to be on top of empty seats? There will be people there, not empty seats. The people unfurl it, hold it up/move it around, and send it back down. It goes up for about 2 minutes and then comes down during introductions for big matches a few times a year. No exits are blocked or anything like that. It's already met with approval from all the various stadium and club authority figures.Again, we've done smaller flags like this for quite awhile now at matches, and similar sorts of things have been common in certain college stadiums for years. While this will be larger scale than before this type of thing is not new or a surprise to fans who have been attending for any length of time. Why is it lame? I don't understand. The MLS and the Chicago Fire are making great strides in tryin to make Soccer a mainstream sport in this country. Soccer specific stadia are a great way to start. What's lame about this????And the banners are a great idea...If this were say a Bayern Munich Banner, nobody would complain about it....
pcgd
A couple of things...This material is not a tarp (I'm imagining) I'm betting its more like flag material. Flag material (also called Celtic Cloth) is very thin and light. You only have to print on one side of this stuff and it comes through just as clear on the other side. Its not heavy. You won't get caught, crushed, or anything else by fabric. The second thing is that the Bridgeview stadium isn't as Soccer Specific as you'd think. Look at the mock up. There is a stage on one end. It's put there so that concerts can be there. And I'm betting it'll get some good concerts. Most shows in chicago (the bigger ones) go to Allstate Arena (Northwest) or the United Center (not the best area) or Tweeter Center (far south and not all that easy to get to) or even sometimes they'll skip chicago all together and hit Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. The stadium will allow concerts to be played just south of Chicago in a decent area with alot of land for parking. I'll never understand the hatred of soccer in this country. If you don't like it, fine, don't watch don't comment. But there are plenty of people in the US that do like soccer and want to see the MLS flurish. If they want to build publicly funded stadiums that'll bring real revenue to a smaller suburb like Bridgeview, then what the hell is wrong with that? Soccer stadiums are not huge expensive projects. A baseball stadium the size of Fenway or Wrigley would cost more than this stadium did. If you don't like soccer, fine. But there is no need to go off about it every chance you can. pcgd
Wow...look at "empty" soldier field. People in Chicago must hate soccer. Why on earth would they build a stadium so the team can have all the revenue instead of giving it to the Bears or the Park District?
pauly07
I wish Philly had a soccer team. And an outdoor soccer team, because the MISL just doesn't impress me.

Breakwood
Good show, the Chicago fans are currently the best in MLS. You guys have done well bringing tifo to North America, but unfortunatly you will be 2nd best once Toronto FC joins the league next year.
