I read that MLB would like to transfer the franchise to the new owner by June 15th, which means an announcement should be coming any time, probably before mid-May.

I heard that the people in Washington are getting somewhat impatient with MLB because they said that they'd find an owner for the Nats a while ago. Hopefully they can get this done soon.

I heard on Sunday Night Baseball last week that one of the key components of the sale is that the new ownership group must have a strong African-American presence within it. I'm not sure what that has to do with running a baseball team but thats what was said and that could be a factor.

Also keep in mind the longer they wait, the more they can get in a negotiated sale. The Nats are (i) making a profit already, and (ii) getting closer and closer to a virtual bonanza once they move into "Insert Your Corporate Name Here for $100 Million" Park.

nah, its all good cappital. I don't have beef with baseball in DC. They probably should have had a team a loooooooong time ago. It's good that they finally have a team again.

I'm sure BallWonk can correct me if I misspeak, but I've been trying to follow this. The price is pretty much set at around 450 million dollars. There is a very, very small chance that the price is an issue. The announcement should take place in the coming week because Commissioner Selig wants to fast track this and get the ownership group approved at the Owner's Meetings May 17-18.

Major League Baseball has owned the Expos/Nationals since early 2002. Some four and a half (almost) years later, this sad saga will finally come to an end, and the Nation's capital will finally be able to properly embrace "their" team.

My opinion of why it's taking so long to find an owner, eventhough the price has pretty much been set.

1. 3 of the 8 ownership groups vying for the franchise are heavy hitters. The Fred Malek group, led by former Texas Rangers minority owner with President George W. Bush, is the front-runner and has pretty much always been. Next likely is the Mark Lerner group, led by one of the Capitals' minority owners. This group is still a possibility. Third, but a distant third, is the Jeff Smulyan group, led by a former Seattle Mariners partner. They don't have the greatest of shots, but never underestimate the power of being a former owner.

2. Because of the tenuous 100% publicly funded stadium issue, MLB realizes that the group they choose MUST have strong Washington political ties to strongarm the District's (lack of) leadership to get that $500-700 million waterfront ballpark built. This is a HUGE issue in DC proper. With hospitals closing and the city's education infrastructure in shambles, there is increasing heat on the City Council for this massive expenditure. Malek's group includes Colin Powell (former Sec'y of State) and Vernon Jordan (Clinton's former adviser). Political ties don't get much stronger than that. It also doesn't hurt that both of those men are Black (former Redskin great Darrell Green is also involved). They don't call the District "Chocolate City" for nothing.

I welcome all opinions on this, but that's just how I see it.

Id say by that analysis, itd take nothing short of a miracle for someone other than The Fred Malek group to get the team.

well if Selig knew what he was doing, then they'd still be in Montreal.

If Selig had never become Commissioner, the Expos would be playing in a newly modified Labatt Park....a 45,000 seat retractable roof stadium in downtown Montreal, origanlly a 36,000 non dome stadium.

Will somebody kindly show Mr. Selig the door? He has overstayed his welcome!!!

BRING BASEBALL BACK TO MONTREAL!!!!

Ah someone else noticed the slip in attedence in DC. When the Nats were on Sunday Night Baseball RFK was only about half full. Is the newness of baseball returning to DC already starting to fade or was that just a bad night?

How do you figure? What did Bud Selig himself do to baseball in Montreal? How would it have been different if say Vincent would have stayed as commissioner?

They don't call the District "Chocolate City" for nothing.

I thought Chocolate City was Hershey, PA.
