Big Ten footy

I was looking at Moser's 1000th post thread, and the proverbial lightbulb appeared over my head

I've done college footy concepts before, but this time out will be a concerted effort to focus on one conference (I'll likely be doing several conferences)...and what better conference to start with than the one I know and love, the Big Ten!

the first team is, while I don't much like em, is the nearest (or second-nearest) to me, Northwestern University.

basically, this makes sure that Northwestern striping appears on A Northwestern football uniform (though not necessarily THAT football team). you've probably noticed something about the front by now

the road, I did something similar last year (hockey). so, redoing it here wasn't much of a stretch-you actually would see something similar on an oval.

Yeah, the away is solid, Discrim. I also like how you use the notches on the N to form a neat stripe pattern on the home. Nice work.

I'm likely posting Wisconsin next, and then either Iowa or Minnesota. basically, my plan for those is as follows:

Wisconsin home-red with white jailbar stripes

away-either solid red or mainly red with a little white striping, Bucky Badger will be a prominent part of this one

clash-as with Northwestern, an inversed home

Iowa home-black "wing" bars on gold (think the 94 football jerseys)

away-undecided

clash-undecided on design, likely primarily black

Minnesota home-maroon with thin gold hoops, M logo integrated into striping

clash-admittedly, I have no idea what this is gonna look like until I start on it.

of the other 7 schools, I only have a semi-concrete idea for Michigan: the famous helmet striping WILL make its way onto the oval.

IMO Northwestern has one of the weakest logo packages of any team around. For what little you were given to work with, you came through in typical Discrim manner. Nice work.

heh, I'd be inclined to disagree, but then I live in Big Ten country so most folks here know who wears that N. if I lived in the south or new england, I'd likely agree with you, though.

the only weaker package I could really think of as far as major schools would be that of Illinois. if it were based on sheer numbers, then a lot of schools would be thrown in there, notably Oklahoma, Indiana and Michigan. the OU, the IU and the M are so iconic, however, they don't need any other logos, you know who it is when you see it. Illinois? not the case. sure, it used to be when Chief Illiniwek was used prominently, but that's no longer the case as they now simply use an I. sometimes in a circle, sometimes with ILLINOIS plastered over it.

heh, you think i had little to work with for Northwestern? I have even less to go with for Indiana, but I have an idea for em.

with all that said, I now turn my attention to today's set. we go from talkin about weak identities to showing off a strong one in Wisconsin. you can look at either the motion W or Bucky and know who it is off the bat...so here's teh set:

On the Northwester one, I love the road kit with the giant purple "N". That's sweet! The entire Wildcats set look good. (Though I'm sure Illinois will be better)The Wisconsin set are also solid. I like Bucky on the shorts.

heh, you could just as easily have the black worn for home games and the gold when a clash happens. anyways, I've finally gotten back to a very old idea I'd posted way back when we were still on the fanhome boards (South Texas Railmen, anyone?). that idea, obviously, is the train track striping, used as a hoop on the golds and as a sash on the blacks (for obvious reasons, I didn't keep the sash going on the back).

the home and clash are modeled after Iowa's 94-95 jerseys, and the road is inspired by Hawthorn's old road jumper, only reversing the positions of the hawk head and wing.

there are going to be (or have been) those concepts you might do of teams you hate...even so, if you take pride in what you do, you put biases aside to put out a quality concept. (joke concepts are a different story, however )

"Footy" is simply what Australians call football, whether that be Australian Rules or rugby. That also applies to the ball as well. One thing about Aussies is they love to have a nickname for everything.

To avoid confusion with American football, everyone calls it "gridiron", which isn't a bad word for it actually.

heh, i'd been thinking of doing the Big 12 after this...great minds, I say I'll probably put that on the backburner and do the ACC after a short break, though, as I've already done Miami (and I can't wait for yall to see it).
