Portsmouth Spartans

FWIW, I'm not convinced that either of those were ever used by the club.

Few early NFL teams had official logos or wordmarks. The best you could find would probably be on letterhead. In recent years, teams have created logos and graphics for the early teams so they can sell stuff, but I wouldn't put much stock in any of them.

Even my Packers started doing this last year:

None of those wordmarks or logos are historically accurate. Some are close, but none are actually right. Not surprising - the Packers spread a great deal of bad information about their own early uniform history, presumably through ignorance.

I don't know where those particular Spartans logos came from, so I wouldn't put much faith in them.

Did the Portsmouth SPartans ever have an official logo and what was it? i've been a bit curious about this team as of recently. I've also been trying to look for their logo but i haven't ran across any.

And not just uniforms. Note this from the team's Web site:

I mean, I can understand how clothing manufacturers use 1921 as it's the first year the team was in the NFL. But even the team's official history says it started in 1919. In 1983, it wore 75th season patches saying 1919. Jesus, I think Lee Remmel's been there since 1919. And they can't get the date right on their Web site???

I think that actually has something to do with the NFL not allowing them to count years before they joined the League. The team originally played in 1919, but they weren't granted a franchise to play in the NFL until 1921.

I seem to recall the club getting grief for the 75th Anniversary patch they put on uniforms in 1994.

I've been interested in seeing how the Cardinals approach this question, but I've never seen any merchandise with their founding date on it.

IIRC the Cardinals wore a 100 Anniversary patch that included their pre-NFL years. I'm not sure if they got any flack for it or not.

Still, if I were a Packers fans I'd get that Acme Packers hoodie, the blue one with the "AP" logo on the sleeve.

Thanks - I knew it had to be something like that.

Did you make up the color scheme, or was there some historical justification for it?

The color scheme I picked up from SSUR

Which I completely pulled out of my butt - to be honest.

:D

I have on good authority that they were Purple and Gold, but I just guessed on the actual shades.

Here's a portion of a pic I took while attending the first preseason game at UoP Stadium:

I took this about an hour before kickoff...I was glad to see the '1898' designation...the Cards' website mentions 1898 many times as well.
