So, I want to go to the 2010 World Cup...any advice?

I wanted to go to the 2006 World Cup, but school and money got in the way. I'm saving up this time around so I can go in 2010. I've also started talking to friends about getting about 10 of us to travel together. This will make it more fun, and much safer. My friend Shannon lives in Cape Town, so I potentially have a place to stay thus making it a little cheaper.

My questions basically are:

A - How do I get tickets for me let alone a group of people?

B - Can I guarantee that I get tickets to watch the United States as opposed to being stuck with say Sweden vs. Trinidad & Tobago or another game with two teams that I have no affinity for?

C - What can I expect as far as ticket prices?

D - Is this even going to be safe? I know South Africa is pretty dangerous, but Cape Town isn't as bad as Johannesburg where the Final is at.

E - Any other general advice would be much appreciated.

"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be eaten. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running." - Unknown | 🌐 Check out my articles on jerseys at Bacon Sports 🔗

A: I'd e-mail FIFA for starters.

B: The schedule won't even be known until all 32 teams are decided, which probably won't be before November 2009 at the earliest. And even then, it's not guarenteed yet that the United States will even be there.

C: Don't know. I'd e-mail FIFA about this too.

D: It ought to be. These are pretty secure events seeing the amount of tourism it attracts.

E: As long as you have plenty of money saved up, you probably won't get an official answer to any of these before the calendar hits 2010.

Florida can't win the World Cup, Bg.

Technically they can. Abby Wambach and Heather Mitts on the U.S. Women's team are both former Gators. UF doesn't have a men's soccer team. =)

Truth be told, South Africa is a fairly safe country as long as you, just like everywhere else, stay out of the bad areas. I have friends all over SA, including Cape Town and Johannesburg and they've all told me that. Especially if your (Truth is sometimes not pretty) white.

As for being able to get tickets to the US games, I know that for the last world cup you could buy team packs. Which would get you tickets to each game of a specifc country. You got the initial group stage matches, and if your team advanced, you had first chance to buy tickets for that teams next game. Another bonus with that is that you'd be seated with the fans of your country.

The US Soccer Federation uses a lottery system for allocating tickets. However, as of this time, I'm almost positive that the Federation isn't accepting applications for the lottery.

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

While Germany 2006 had difficulty in getting correct tickets to the correct buyers, this is a similar timetable if FIFA uses it:

* 2007 - World Cup 2010 ticketing policies defined and ticket allocation model developed

* 2008 - World Cup 2010 ticket packages set up, ticket requirements defined and preferential ticket sales started

* 2009 - Public ticket sales open

* 2010 - Ticket distribution

The ticketing process is controlled by FIFA but FIFA should improve on the fiasco from 2006. One of the only groups gauranteed seats is FNB (a South African bank and sponsor, who has started a contest to their employees and accounts).

Since there will be a number of you, a tour package (when available) will be your best shot of seats together and correct flights and accomodations. While it is years away, your Florida location could be somewhat benefit you. Delta currently codeshares with South African Airways to Jo'burg from Hartsfield (ATL), but it stops. Nonstops are from IAD (Washington-Dulles) and JFK. They are working on a nonstop from Atlanta.

As others have said, the game dates and sites for each game day hasn't been determined. Therefore, since teams haven't officialy qualified, you cannot be assured specific games just yet. Groups have not been placed at venues yet. Prices have not yet been determined, but since South Africa is a poor country, they have said that tickets wil be affordable to their citizens. Jo'burg will have twice the games since they wil be using two stadiums in the city FNB Stadium and Ellis Park. FNB Stadium/Soccer City is in Soweto, but precautions to ensure the safety of the visitors will be in place. Pretoria will also be you closest other city. Cape Town is across the country.

Remember, this is possibly one of South Africa's best chances for global investment. I, along with my cousin did took our moms last year and it was just as safe as any major US city. You might not have time for a safari, but it is life-changing if you can go. If you do go, stay together, don't get blasted, and ask the hotel front desk/concerige as many questions as possible. Shoot me PM if you need more information.

I think most of the people interested in going want to stay away from Johannesburg, so that's partly why we're chosing Cape Town. Also we have a friend that lives there. Obviously if the United States doesn't play any games in Cape Town that will change, so I guess either way I'll have to wait. Thanks for your help, and I'll definately message you as the ticket purchasing time approaches.

I'm thinking of budgetting about $8,000 or so to travel for to South Africa. I'm not fussed what games I see, as long as I see a few, take in the culture, meet some locals, and enjoy South Africa.

South Africa is one country I'd really like to visit, the other is Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia.

Usually they sell what they call TSTs, or Team Series Tickets. So you won't get some random ticket to a game you're not interested in.

Interestingly, a friend of mine here has set up a blog for his preparations for going to the 2010 WC. He's also gone to 1998 France, 2002 Korea/Japan, and 2006 Germany. He just got back from Copa America in Venezuela and has posted some cool stuff about that trip.

Ask your friend what his budgets were for 98, 02, and 06. Ask him what strategies he used, etc. That would be of help for sure.

I was a little confused by that last sentence. Do you mean:

A- South Africa is safer if you are white or

B- The bad areas in South Africa are more dangerous if you are white

Also, are the alleged safety problems of the type stereotypical to American inner-cities, or the institutional corruption stereotypical to Mexico?

(For some reason I'm really interested in spending a few months there after I graduate next summer, while doing a CELTA TEFL program)

There are 10 types of people in this world: those who understand binary and those who don't.

I own stock in a chain of fast food restaurants in South Africa. There is plenty of money to be made down there thanks to the World Cup coming there. Expect South Africa to be on it's best behavior during the WC. It should be a great time. SA is a beautiful country
