Ez Street
All you need to know about this is:Kansas.I'm sorry that is an asinine comment.I love how people view the entire state as being this "Red" state, with bigoted, small minded individuals. We have a female democrat as govenor, as well as a democrat congresswoman. It's like saying, everyone in New York City is a Yankees fan....I sure as hell wouldn't say the people in Iowa are all corn-fed idiots.Instead of accusing my state of being small-minded, perhaps you should take a look at your own position.Oh and by the way, it wasn't right for the school to hide behind the whole "we are a private school, we can do what we please." God knows, we've seen this before. I need not bring back any Fuzzy Zoeller reference to remind you about OTHER states and their issues with african-americans and private golf courses. It's not right for them either. @DavidStreeter
BB61
Yeah, I don't think it's a matter of location. It's just a case of being a close minded person. What you do in that case is you call whoever runs the league, and explain to them the situation. That person then tells the AD, look, this is who is assigned to the game. If you can't accept that, then you forfeit. Simple as that.Officials are officials. They are put in that position because they've earned the right to be there. Someone thinks that they're doing a good job, Even if they aren't (which goes for just about 80% of MLB umpires, but that's a different rant). It has nothing to do with gender. No one outside of the league should be allowed to dictate the officials.

FiddySicks
I would really like to hear from someone who lives near the Topeka area. Are people really that insanely illogical when it comes to religious issues? I mean come on, this, Westboro Baptist Church, ect ect. Somethings gotta give.Look, when it comes to these things you have to look at how is involved.First off, everyone in Topeka aside from Westboro Baptist Church hates Fred Phelps. So it is not indicative of our culture here in the Capital city.As for St. Mary's, well it's an uber-traditional catholic school, in a small town about 20 minutes from here. I don't agree with what transpired, but then again I'm not catholic or even close to being catholic.Topeka is really no different than any other town. We have our nut balls like everyone else does.If someone thinks that Topeka is full of religious zealots, then they would be making the same type of mistake that John Rocker did talking about NYC.But I guess it goes to show you, two bad apples do spoil the bunch.Everyone that has commented about this locally is against it. Hope that addresses your questions.Yeah I think you're correct. My apologies for overgeneralizing and pulling the entire area into the filth of a small sector, but I've yet to personally encounter anyone who is that batty. And it seems that Kansas, particularly the Topeka area, makes the news quite a bit over contraversial religious issues. I guess the better question would be (and I think Chief already answered it), are there really groups of people in the area who are that nuts, and how noticeable is it to you? Ez Street
Aside from Phelps and his band of hate mongers.....It's normal town USA, well with maybe a slightly higher crime rate.I can't say most people are religious wackos. In fact its like most midwestern towns, folks are friendly and likeable.Everytown and region has it's seedy side. @DavidStreeter

There are times when I want out of here quicker than Clark Kent out of Smallville, but other times I just like my small town. Like EZ Street said, no town or state is without its problems. As for Phelps, not even worth arguing about.
SG30
I know this is going to make me sound completely sexist, but I really like my sports to stay separated by gender. I know there a lot of competent female referees and I'm not trying to discredit them at all, but I think men should ref men's games and women should ref women's games. Same goes for coaching, IMO.Yea I agree. I think that ejecting the ref because she was a woman in this case was wrong, but I don't think she should have even been there in the first place. It also bothers me when I go to a girls varsity game and all the refs are men.I don't see why it should bother you. You don't go to a professional game to see what gender the refs or coaches are, so why should a varsity game be any different?I'm sorry I totally phrased that wrong. The fact that the refs at the game are men does not bother me, its just something I notice. I should have just said this- Men's sports are for men. Women's sports are for women. There's no need for a big stink like this when they mix, but I prefer the segregation.
apeman33
Just to clarify, St. Marys Academy isn't a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association and I think it's because of the policies it holds about gender. It doesn't field a single girls' athletic team and I'm not sure if girls can even take part in forensics or debate or even band. It has an "approved school" status, which means KSHSAA schools can play them and the game is allowed to count on their record (you can play an unapproved school, but the game doesn't count.). The state association, therefore, can't sanction St. Marys except to revoke their approved status and then they'd have a hard time getting games. It's my understanding that the state will probably look into doing that and the officials association will likely not allow any of its officials to work there any more.If they want to have stone-age policies, that's fine. They don't accept any government funding so it can have the ability to enforce whatever policies it sees fit. They shouldn't be surprised, however, when people react to gender ethics that were last held redeemable in the 1600s.

EatSleepJeep
I apologize. I didn't realize you were from the diverse, eclectic and bustling metropolis known as Hays, Kansas. It's reputation as the mecca for the free exchange of ideas and the equal application of civil liberties to all groups and classes is world renowned. All of this despite being over 95% white! Honestly, why do you even bother voting? It may be premature, but I'm going to call the Kansas electoral votes in the 2008 general election for (Whomever has a R next to their name on the ballot). You heard it here first. C'mon - the caucus went to Huckabee. He's mathematically eliminated but they gave him all their delegates anyway. Smart.
