Sports cities needing teams

I realize this is a little off topic for this forum, but I was just noticing which markets have teams for which of the 5 major professional sports and wanted to get it off my chest.

Anyway, I think Florida deserves an MLS team. I also think the Charlotte market should get an MLB team and either KC or StL should get an NBA team instead of OKC. The NFL is distributed pretty fairly, but I think Seattle is missing an NHL (& now NBA) team.

Side note: Only 7 US cities have a team in each of the 5 major professional leagues,

- Dallas (Mavericks, Cowboys, Rangers, Stars, FC Dallas)

- New York (Knicks, Giants/Jets, Mets/Yankees, Islanders/Rangers, Red Bull)

- Chicago (Bulls, Bears, White Sox/Cubs, Blackhawks, Fire)

- Philadelphia (Sixers, Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, 2010 team)

- Boston (Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox, Bruins, Revolution)

- Denver (Nuggets, Broncos, Rockies, Avalanche, Rapids)

- DC (Wizards, Redskins, Nationals, Capitols, United)

I still feel that the Sacramento area would be better suited for the A's than Fremont.

If you're counting NY and northern NJ as one market you might as well count SF/SJ/Oakland (and LA/Anaheim, not applicable here) as a single market, too.

Anyone can sit around and say "ooh, Charlotte - they deserve a team!", but do some homework and provide facts to support your proclamations that these cities "deserve" teams. I'm talking about things like market size, historic support, local culture, TV situation, etc.

theres no hocky fans in california and the hee-haw states they should put those teams in Quebec, winnypeg, kamloops, halifax, and another one in toronto so that they can finally have a good team.

Winnipeg, Quebec City, Halifax, Saskatoon, Hartford. They need NHL teams.

Vegas needs.... something. Anything. Except hockey. Preferably basketball (although, as much as I think a hockey team would FAIL there, I secretly hope one moves there because then the Wings might move to the Eastern Conference).

LA needs a football team. Really.

That is all.

Everybody "deserves" a major league team.

Now the question of who should get/can financially support one is a very different proposition. One that eliminates most of the suggestions I have seen thus far. I'm not going to throw any suggestions out there, but I felt that clarifying the difference between "deserve" and "feasibly support" was important.

Oh, and the MLS is not on par with the NFL, MLB, or NBA yet, and probably not the NHL.

As far as the Phoenix area goes we already have it all pretty much, but I think we should have a MLS franchise. With the large latino prescence and the growing fan base for the game of futbol we would be a great fit

The only way Toronto would get another NHL team is if Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment owns it.

Was there really a need for the vitriol? A courteous request would have been far more appropriate than a rant?

While I agree what you are saying, but no need for the name calling, at least say hey can we have this moved I believe this is in the wrong forum. Not hey lets bring attention to myself

First, are we all in agreement that we're adding the MLS to "the big four?"

Second, Arizona had a problem maintaining attendance for the Arizona Sahuaros.

We only seem to have great attendance when it's an international friendly these days.

No. In fact, if you look at its attendance, revenue, television coverage, and general awareness of the league, it is nowhere near the other four. It doesn't even come close to the NHL, which is lagging behind the other three. So, no, it is not suddenly a major league. If you walked up to the VAST majority of the people in this country, they would tell you it isn't.

A better barometer if a city is super-major league or not is access to NASCAR tracks. That gets higher TV viewership than NHL, does it not? It's a little bit more difficult to plop a racetrack somewhere and the markets that support NASCAR are traditionally different than those that support the other major sports, but I think it can certainly be part of the conversation.

And as far as I know, places like New York, San Francisco and Seattle were trying to get NASCAR tracks built in their general regions. I think that speaks volumes about the major leagueness of the sport.
