Winnipeg would be a very good AA affiliate for the Twins, just as Schaumburg and Gary would be ideal AA affiliates for the Cubs and White Sox. It'd be nice to have a midwestern AA circuit.

Winnipeg would be a better AAA affiliate for the Twins, or (shudder) the Jays for that matter. Canwest Field can be expanded pretty quickly from 7400 to 12,000 with the addition of a 3rd-baseline grandstand and some outfield bleacher seating.

Of course, there's the weather excuse (but BUFFALO can do it!), and the whole, no one in their right mind would want to move to Winnipeg, but that's a whole 'nother beast.

I got a fundraising form from my Athletic Director that was sent to him from the Fielders. I emailed him back and said to stay far away from this. The buy out night is the one that caught my attention of a major scam. Besides them not having a stadium. The team schedule has them starting at home in June.

I wish I could show all of you the entire packet the Fielders sent.

Here is what they sent.

Here is our information about fundraising:

2 different basic types of Fundraisers:

Buy Out Night any weekday game

The night becomes Bradford High School Night complete with a member from the school throwing out the 1st pitch, members singing the 7th inning stretch, etc.

Purchase 2,500 to 5,000 General Admission Tickets @ $2 apiece and re-sell them for $5 apiece

Purchase commitment (2,500 tickets @ $2)- $5,000

Amount fundraised (when re-sold @ $5) - $7,500

Standard Fundraiser any game

Purchase 100-1,000 Reserved Box Tickets @ $5-8 apiece and re-sell them for $10 apiece

Purchase commitment (100 tickets @ $8) - $800

Amount fundraised (when re-sold @ $10) - $200

Purchase commitment (1,000 tickets @ $5) - $5,000

Amount fundraised (when re-sold @ $10) - $5,000

Thumper: is that true about the Flyers being in danger of losing their lease at Alexian, or are you just postulating based on the well-known fact that they don't pay their rent? That really throws a wrench into Schaumburg as a contingency plan, and kind of into the league, one would have to think.

Not even close. I was just poking fun at that one guy who insists that the Fielders are going to move to Grand Forks and play at the Alerus Center. That's the stupidest idea i've ever heard. It'd seriously be like the Dodgers needing a temporary home and playing games at the Staples Center.

Baseball at the Alerus Center??? Who suggested this?

P.S. I miss the Varmints.

That is certifiably improbable.

The Phoenix Coyotes build their arena as an anchor for a mall.

The Florida Panthers build their arena in a town that's nothing more than a series of strip malls.

The Lake County Fielders will see you and raise you by plopping down a few sets of aluminum bleachers next to an existing, half-empty strip mall, and calling it a "baseball village".

Also, I don't know who to like more in the comments: the Pollyanna who keeps popping in, or the nutjob who blames the whole thing on the EPA and the government.

This guy. Definitely. Those who choose to blatantly ignore reality are the most entertaining.

I have absolutely no idea how they're going to do any of this. Defies explanation as well as several zoning laws. This could almost be a book.

On the plus side, there is already a CVS Pharmacy on the site, so hey, no need to build any concession stands!

Well, there it is in print. Fielders moving to Schaumburg until the "temporary ballpark" is ready later this summer. And it really is gonna be aluminum bleachers and portable crappers this year, if it's so lucky as to be anything at all. Apparently all they've done on the site so far, here on April 28th, is erect a silt fence. Zoning meeting isn't until the 6th, so they can't start moving dirt until the 7th at the earliest, which would put them at a July opening at best. Just let it go already.

The team's financial plan for year two, she added, is expected to be covered by operating revenue

The Lowell Spinners played in a modified high school stadium for a few seasons before their own stadium was built across town.

Metal bleachers, porta-johns, and a trailer for concessions.

/just sayin

The difference here being that they were a Red Sox affiliate playing in Massachusetts. The fans would come if you played in a bleeping sandlot in the bad part of town.

None of that is applicable in this case.

Well, now for some actual sports-logo-esque news from the Fielders: They played a preseason game yesterday, and their road jerseys are a nice, standard gray... which they then proceed to ruin by wearing navy pants with red piping. Yikes.

I had to take a close look to make sure the team didn't run out of money at the waist and just picked up some sweatpants at Meijer.
