No, Nitro's right. After seeing how easily Sterling's Ice Cats logo was already misused, I have to agree with him.

If anyone wants to take down his images in order to protect them, he has my support.

This is something that I missed. How'd it get misused? Somebody fill me in, please.

Just read the Ice Cats thread.

It was fairly innocent and I belive it has since been resolved, but it's still a reminder of how we all need to respect and protect each other's creative property.

Sorry guys - I have removed the Ice Cats logo from my computer. I had no intention of misusing it. I appologized for not asking permission and will use another logo as respect towards your work.

The logo was only used in my P.E. class for a Lacrosse Logo. I should have asked permission first. My excitement over a such a neat & creative "concept" got the best of me.

I will remember to ask permission to use anything else posted by you all, in order to protect your "property". I enjoy your work and seeing it progress into it's final "creation". If I offended anyone, my appologies to you all.

With Sincere Appologies,

nitro I gotta say I understand and respect your decision, but I'm not in agreement with ya.

As sammysabre bluntly pointed out, anytime you post ANYTHING here its open to scrutiny and thievery ... my grandfather used to say, you can put locks on your door, but they only keep out the ones that don't want to get in. The thing that does make this project differ from any other fantasy project you have worked on, is the fact that there is a real client who may be interested in the final product .. and you don't want to advertise free work for them, and have them use your ideas and hard work for anything (even if its not a direct rip, there certainly will be inspiration taken from it if they choose to hire someone else to work on a new identity).

I had considered doing the same thing with my Sabres concepts after having a couple meetings with the organization and finding out where they stand and what their intentions are with a new identity. I considered taking everything offline (even though they had print versions), to simply not make it as easy for theives to steal. After weighing the options, a part of me almost WANTED them to use my work as a source of .. shall we say .. extreme inspiration .. so this way I can see the team wearing a logo that I feel is correct for the them, and I can also likely obtain a settlement. ( i know money isnt a key issue for your argument here, but when dealing with the Sabres .. for me, it certainly was/is an issue )

Now I also don't trust this Joe Kolodziej ... its possible the man is simply getting a raw deal right now, but logic tells us that a man being accused is usually involved in SOMETHING one way or another. Thats not to say that the accusations immediately convict him, but it does mean that anybody with experience will know to keep their guard up stronger and longer.

Like I said before, I am simply approaching this whole thing as a project with an artificial client, designing the identity package as I envision it correctly. The upside is that at the end of this project, there is the oppurtunity to sell it. I have worked on a couple projects for clients where it worked this way, I created what I thought was best for them, then after viewing it, they agreed and purchased. Its not the preferred way this works, as you should never get into a boat that you know won't float ... but sometimes (such as this case), regardless of the outcome with the client, the final product is something worth the work .. there is a portfolio piece, and as with every project ... you learn a little more about your craft.

Well, I did myself a favor and read up on the copyright laws yesterday, so I have to say I'm feeling much better about the situation. I will still post work on the board, but I'm going to make it clear that the work is copyrighted. Granted, that won't keep people from stealing it, but at least it will serve as a warning for those that consider it that I have every intention to take whatever action necessary to make sure my work isn't abused.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I regretted doing the project altogether. The Comets piece I did is one of the very few logos I'm 100% proud of. I do realize it's silly to think that the work I did for this project is at any more risk than anything else I put up. I think, if nothing else, this has just made me more aware of how I need to be more careful with it.

Actually, it would probably be a good idea if we all got in the habit of marking our original work, much like rozilla and iDonovan currently do, prior to posting it. That won't neccessarily prevent theft, but it sends a message that we won't tolerate it either.

Hey nitro, do you by any chance have a link to the information? I was always curious to know about the copyright laws.

Heres something of a public secret among designers

The cheapest way to register your work is to mail yourself a copy of your work through certified mail. You then generate an official government timestamp on the work, and if it is ever called into question, you have a sealed dated document as proof.

I have known a couple of designers who have used this method to win court cases in which people claimed ownership of their work.

News....

"I finally have to admit that the Sabres aren't going to make the playoffs. Because they didn't, despite having the best record in the Eastern Conference since March's trade deadline. But the antics of Derek Roy, Milan Bartovic, and Chris Taylor continue in the playoffs: they've returned to the Amerks to boost the team through the Division Semifinals against the Syracuse Crunch, in a best-of-seven series stating in Syracuse on the 16th. Other Sabre call-ups include Jason Botterill, Norm Milley, Jiri Novotny, Domenic Pittis, and goalie Ryan Miller, with veteran winger Jason Dawe rounding out the familiar faces.

Closer to home, hockey continues to entertain the masses on other levels. The Buffalo Wings Roller Hockey League (born of the Wings professional team, and well-outliving the professional league) has joined the Professional Inline Hockey Association this year with a semi-pro team. The coaches (Jay Cieselski, Sr. and BWRHL founder and "all-around old goalie" Jason Klein) hand-picked BWRHL players for the team, making local talent the rule. Klein and Cieselski will be "taunting officials" while "alternating bench door-opening duties" for local players Eric Haak (Lockport), top-ranked roller hockey goaltender Jason Flowers (Lancaster), star pugilist of the Buffalo Wings pro team Ken Corp (Buffalo Riverside), and Niagara University ice hockey star Chris Welch (Kenmore).

The exhibition team's only two home games will be played on May 22nd at the Amherst Pepsi Center. Tickets for the games are already on sale there, for a whopping $5 each. If you'd rather "do" than watch, join one of the nearly 100 youth and adult inline teams competing this summer in the BWRHL - open registration continues at the APC until April 22nd, with details available at http://www.buffalowings.net.

"Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction" is in reruns now. The show "re-enacts" several incredible situations. At the end of the show, the host tells you which are true, confirmable stories, and which ones they made up. And THAT is the page that is always missing from my Buffalo News.

The team name and logo for Buffalo's new minor-league hockey team were unveiled at a recent press conference. Team owner Joe Kolodziej answered questions about the team, the North East Hockey League, players, schedule ... and then the News reporter asked if he had the rights to the franchise.

Confused by the question (the team was announced in February), Kolodziej explained that the franchise agreement was signed December 23rd. The News story then ran with... the new logo? No. One of many photos taken at the Chophouse? No. It ran with the headline "Dispute Clouds Hockey Announcement." No mention of Kolodziej's confirmation of a signed franchise agreement. It quoted the GM of the Jamestown Titans as saying, "We have not picked the owner yet."

"We?" Rob Madia was the GM and a player at the time the article was written, not a League official. He had approached Kolodziej for a job with the Buffalo franchise, so he understood at some point that Kolodziej was already the franchise holder. After the News' article appeared, Madia's involvement with the League was reduced to an "as-needed" basis.

I've seen the franchise agreement (amended January 13th) - there's no dispute. Any resemblance to real persons or events is coincidental.

Other facts the News thought readers wouldn't find interesting: the Buffalo Stampede has hired Alain Lemieux as a special consultant. Lemieux played professionally for St. Louis, Québec, and Pittsburgh, coached in the ECHL, and has a younger brother named Mario. He'll be in Buffalo to run free agent camps over the summer.

The NEHL's salary cap is $4000 per team per week: "These guys are playing for the love of the game. They're not playing to make a whole lot of money, because they're not making a whole lot of money." By keeping all ticket prices under $10, Kolodziej can put families in the seats: "We'll focus on skill development, fair play, and a fun time. ... Where can you go out as a family of four and spend $40 for the best seats in the house?"

After starting a team in Northern Michigan with the IIHL (a league that then fell upon financial troubles), WNY-native Kolodziej took the opportunity to "come home, get in touch with my family, be part of the community." He's not kidding - his players' contracts require them to perform two hours of community service every week. And while arena leases still haven't been settled, Kolodziej is looking for office space in the City: "It's important as an organization to be in Buffalo. If you're going to call yourself the 'Buffalo' Stampede, you need to be well-grounded (in Buffalo)."

What an attitude! Good thing the Buffalo News is there to discourage Buffalonians who want to come home and invest in the area..."

Because only one really needed to get bumped to get the information across...

...and if it's really necessary to ressurect the project, then it'll happen. I really don't think they all needed to get bumped.

One thread bumped would've been enough...

Reminds me of SHB Appreciation Day '03. :D
