My one chance to catch one went awry after my friend tipped the ball away right before it would've landed comfortably in my grasp. The ball then proceeded to bounce off another seat and right to my friend. We no longer speak.

The last part isn't true, but he did rob of me of my one chance (so far) to get one. I don't really care since he did with it what I'd have done, give it to a younger fan.

Doesn't that suck when somebody makes an amazing snag of a HR ball from some famous slugger, a ball they'd love to have, but the guy or gal who caught it is up there on the jumbotron and there's some cute kid two seats down and suddenly there's peer pressure from 40,000 people to give the ball to the kid, who will probably lose it down a storm drain in a game of pickup streetball a week later? :D

Is that a recent, like a past ten years thing? I don't remember the pressure to give kids balls when I was growing up - I may have actually gotten ahold of one had it been the case.

I ask, because it's an expectation I don't care for. Yes, I'm a grown man, but I've also never caught or acquired a foul ball. If I ever finally reach that brass ring, I should be expected to give my ball to some punk kid? Eff that.

Just do what the fine folks at Wrigley do: Bring a baseball with you (or catch one of the balls hit in batting practice). Then, if you so happen to catch a foul/homerun ball, pocket that ball while getting out the ball you had earlier, and toss that to the kid or onto the field....

Eh, I don't think there's any pressure to do it. For me, catching or getting a foul ball meant a whole lot more to me as a kid than it does now, so I'm sure it's a bigger deal to some younger fans than it is for me, so I'd gladly give it up. It's all about catching the ball for me, not so much keeping it.

To hell with the kid. If it take you 20 plus years of going to games to get a ball then why give it to a kid that is at his 2nd or 3rd game? His time will come.

-Dan

Because like I said, it really doesn't mean nearly as much to me as it used to, and I just kind of presume that when the kids does finally get his foul ball, he'll probably feel the same way. Might as well make the little kids night. I'm not saying everybody should give their caught foul balls away, just saying it's probably what I'd have done had my chance not gone by the wayside.

Screw the kids. I've been going to games since 1969 and I've never gotten a ball. If I ever get one you can bet your ass I'm keeping it. :D

When I was working in radio we used to cover Syracuse Chiefs games and I got a ton of foul balls when they would fly up on the roof outside the press box at old MacArthur Stadium but I don't count those because they were too easy. All you had to do was go stand outside the press box for a few minutes, wait for someone to foul off a pitch, and walk over and pick up the ball.

If you have to wait 41+ years then little junior son of a Bi*ch can pay his dues too.

That was a cool video. I remembered when that happened.

But I'm disappointed that the link didn't lead to a scene in Rocko's Modern Life.

Exactly. Or like BlueSky said, if you give it to a kid, the ball would end up in a sewer drain three days later. I'm with -Dan on this; the kids need to pay their dues.
