The_Admiral
Not sure how plantations are being mistaken for central planning. The word "socialism" hadn't even been coined in the 18th century, you ponce. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

max
I don't think you're talking about the same America as the rest of us. Afghanistan was a nice democracy before a communist took power and al-Qaeda revolted. The Soviets came in to aid the Afghani government, and Americans helped al-Qaeda to fight the communists...Afghanistan, not a 'traditional Islamic state' became radical when they entered the frame of global politics. The Afghanistan of the United States is Kansas. Kansas used to be a beacon of freedom and leftist politics (read "What's the Matter With Kansas" or see the movie), in fact John Brown the abolitionist was from Kansas, but became a mainly conservative Christian power only recently. The most widely read newspaper in America for 50 years at the turn of the century was a Socialist magazine printed in Kansas!

The most widely read newspaper in America for 50 years at the turn of the century was a Socialist magazine printed in Kansas!Afghanistan was a monarchy for much of its existence prior to the Soviet invasion. Also, considering how its boundaries are a direct result of British and Russian colonial policies in the 19th Century, and that they were one of the more infamous great power battlegrounds of that period (including no less that 3 separate wars with Britain in less than a century), I'd say they had a fairly sizable role in the frame of global politics for a very long time. Also, post US settlement Kansas was never as fractured, ungoverned, or ethnically divided as Afghanistan is on its best day. The region went to when Alexander the Great knocked it over in the 300s BCE and never really recovered./Stop talking about history or global affairs. Now. max
Officially, Afghanistan held an "experiment in democracy" in the mid-20th century that gave rise to many extremist groups. The communist party, PDPA, grew because of democracy and were backed by the Soviet Union and were opposed by the USA. Afghanistan Reform must occur globally nowadays, there is nothing beyond globalism. To suggest that Afghanistan is somehow still smoldering from a British invasion in 1826 and that an ancient battle pertains to its position in the global community is only half-right. I, too, get upset when I hear the moral-left argue for Obama to "pull out of Afghanistan." Do we realize that the Taliban will take it over within a few months after we leave? Do we understand the massive amount of resources buried under the soil? Why isn't there a mandatory military service period for all citizens. In this period, every 22-24 year-old must help create a more dynamic capitalistic system than what America has today. Then, after two years, we return home to our communes in the West. Capitalism is socialism for those who are on the top.I'd say they had a fairly sizable role in the frame of global politics for a very long time.-Afghanis weren't fundamentalists in 1960, and then the Soviets came to help, and then the United States came, and then al-Qaeda came, and then the United States came back again and switched sides, all within 50 years. Today, Afghanistan has moved from being democratic to being governed by Islamic clerics, the United States were "well-intentioned" in the late-1970s in the same-old stale fight with the Soviets in the arid, neutral, warfield that is the Afghani desert only to return in 2001 fighting the rebels it fought with before, and avoided wars in Iran and Pakistan because Afghanistan was the easy target. Not so fast, though, as quickly as Afghanistan can stagnate as a fundamentalist Islamic country it can reproduce itself as an equally, or if it gains the support of the Chinese authoritarian capitalists, perhaps more efficient and dynamic capitalistic society...and all those trillions of dollars in minerals wasted? Helping eachother, even if it calls for personal sacrifice.Um, the founders didn't believe in that socialist definition of "the benefit of all." They believed that by helping one's self, one would boost the economy in their own way, and through everybody's personal hard work, all would be benefited with very little sacrifice necessary. I am talking about everywhere littered in our texts how the benefit of the whole is tied to the success of the individual, as well as the sacrifice of an individual to help benefit the whole. That's what America has always stood for, since its birth. Not just stepping on everyone's head to get to the top, but when you get to the top, to reach down, and help someone else get there. I just find it hard to believe how much people have forgot (or just never knew) about basic principles and morals of the country.
