hormone
I was flipping through the channels last night and I tuned into the orioles game last night. The cap was the black O's cap, the helmets were the normal helmets with the bird on it, and the first base coach had a helmet of the old logo with the white front panel.Does MLB enforce anything to match the field cap? They can afford a different set of helmets and nothing is consistent. Why not just go little league and grab a red or navy blue helmet out of the bag then? This really bothers me. The helmet should be a hard version of the cap. Agree? Disagree?
tvko
Disagree because then we can't see Matt Wieters' awesome retro helmet You know what they say, "Traditionalist's can go die in a hole if they don't like it."
TopCat
Agreed, for the sake of consistency. Although it doesn't matter because you never see someone with a helmet and someone with a cap on the field at the same time. facebook | @thebugcollector

loogodude90
Wieters has been wearing the retro flapless helmet all season, as have the 1st and 3rd base coaches. The reason the O's are wearing their O's caps is because they always wear those with their alternate jerseys. And the reason they are wearing the modern bird batting helmets is because those are the only helmets they have. phutmasterflex
To my knowledge, catchers sometimes use old helmets that have been kept from the past. Kurt Suzuki sometimes wears the old A's all green/yellow lettering batting helmet when he catches. It's just a left over and I suppose they didn't want to let it go to waste.I can't tell if this is green or black, but I assume it's green since Suzuki never had a black helmet when he catches.I know for a fact that when the A's wore their black jerseys, they wanted to pair it up with the black helmets. So in order to do so, they eliminated the all green/yellow lettering helmet in favor of it. But now with that jersey gone, the team has yet to bring back that old helmet. I think most teams would prefer to just keep two helmet designs. And if memory serves me right, the O's already have two designs already. Go A's! Jungle Jim
I too caught the end of that game and saw that Matt Wieters was wearing the cartoon bird helmet. That bird logo looks too large.EDIT: In doing research to confirm the opinion I just stated above, I discovered that there were at least two different smiling Oriole logos and two styles of white panels on the fronts of the helmets. Check out these two photos. The mouth on the first one is white while the mouth on the second is black, and the white panel is unusually small on the first one. Also, the cap that the bird is wearing in the logo is listed on this site as being used 1966-74, while the logo listed here as being used 1975-88 is not the same as the ones in the photos below. Is that a mistake in the listing on this site?

Although it doesn't matter because you never see someone with a helmet and someone with a cap on the field at the same time.Catchers wear helmets when catching (which sometimes don't match the cap) so there's definetely a time when a differing helmet and cap could be worn by a team at the same time. The opinions I express are mine, and mine only. If I am to express them, it is not to say you or anyone else is wrong, and certainly not to say that I am right. TheOldRoman
I don't mind the catchers wearing the retro helmets since you barely get to see their helmets. The base coaches should have helmets matching what the players are wearing that day. I also think teams should be required to have a matching set of helmets for each regular cap including alternates. There is no reason teams should look different batting from pitching. If the teams don't want to pay for the extra set of helmets they should stick to one cap.The most blatant example is the Indians wearing their navy Wahoo helmet at home with the red C caps. Different color, different logo. This isn't little league where everyone wears black helmets that don't match your team's colors. Match the damn helmets. Match the damn helmets.Except those red C caps, just like the O's hat, suck and so it's nice to not have to see them double time during a game. I actually have no problem with some mismatching helmets/caps with alternate jerseys/uniforms, as long as the helmet at least looks fine with the jersey, in both these cases it does. Now the Phillies throwback alts, that is a case where the regular helmet just looked off with the uniform. And some, like the Cardinals sunday caps, would just be pointless since they only wear them on home sunday games with their regular uniforms. And to an extent the Giants, whose sunday caps are worn at home and the road, but only once a week. And is the primary cap, just with an orange bill. In both these cases, when batting, they look like they're regular everyday combinations. Now, if it's a primary home or road cap, like the A's all green, then yes it should have it's own helmet. Of course that change happened so they could have the black helmets since teams are only allowed to carry 2 helmets. Now that the black is gone, I don't know why the all green helmets aren't back. https://dribbble.com/MakaioCall

Same thing with the Cardinals' cap being worn once a week at home. But if the teams insist on wearing alternate caps (and I think the Giants' is the foremost example of messing with an otherwise great identity), they should go all out and get matching helmets. These are major league teams. What is a set of 25 batting helmets going to cost? $1000? I agree that the Indians' red hat is horrible, so the answer is setting them on fire, not wearing a mismatched batting helmet.
TFoA
The helmet should be a hard version of the cap. Agree? Disagree?Agreed 100%, mainly because it affects my favorite road uniform(s) in all of baseball:The fact that they wear the home helmets on the road now bugs me to no end. They did it seamlessly for years, why change now (other than money... )???And it's weird because certain teams do it, but certain teams don't. There really needs to be a sense of uniformity when it comes to batting helmets matching the caps.
phutmasterflex
I like the all green caps but I also like the home helmets on the road. However, consistency is a must so they must bring back the all green helmets Go A's!

VandyDelphia Mike
The Mets and Rockies, if they insist on having the hideous gradient fade on their respective helmets, should be forced to replicate that look on caps. Perhaps I shouldn't give them any ideas.Thank goodness the Texas Rangers never made the red-to-blue gradient fade a reality for their helmets.
