To me, the glaring parts of the realignment are the Chicagoland division with Charlotte, and the Texas division with :censored:ing Abbotsford, but all in all, it's a quality system.

No alignment in the AHL will ever make perfect sense because... well... look at the AHL map.

There are 18 teams east of the Checkers, making Charlotte the 12th westernmost city in the AHL

Absorb that.

My guess here is that the league hoped/figured Abbotsford would be dead on its own by now, so they've decided to go ahead and kill it. Either the team or the city, doesn't matter at this point.

It's a nice enough town, certainly better than Hope (which is the most ironically-named town in BC), but their continued existence was pretty much predicated on there being at least one more western Canadian city in the league.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Abbotsford's closest opponent is now Rockford.

Charlotte in the Midwest Division? That makes little sense to me outside of my wish for another team to move to Des Moines so the Iowa Chops can be reborn, but that's for another day.

Abbotsford in a division of Southwestern teams also makes little sense, but then again there is no one for miles that is nearby. Plus, it could be a bigger drain on the SW teams. I mean, don't you need to go to Vancouver to reach Abbotsford?

You don't have to but that's the closest city. You could fly to Calgary and then fly to Abbotsford (which is how WestJet would most likely route you.)

Calgary is closer?

No wonder the Flames give the proverbial middle finger to Omaha and the Quad Cities... They wanted a farm team close to home, even if it meant alienating themselves from the rest of the AHL.

Calgary isn't closer but in terms of flying from, say, Houston or Austin or Chicago, you aren't going to fly past Abbotsford and then backtrack. It's just one transfer in Calgary to get from all those places.

We were better off sharing with Carolina in Lowell for one year then we ever have been in Omaha, Quad City and Abby. I still don't know what the problem is with the higher ups and their problems with AHL franchises. What was wrong with Saint John? They were successful and they drew fairly well, maybe it was them getting a QMJHL team. I don't care about travel and I guess the Flames don't really.

Moncton Golden Flames, Saint John Flames, Lowell Lock Monsters, Qmaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, Quad City Flames, Abbotsford Heat.

They seem to get closer and closer with every AHL team they take over. My guess is they'll be in Alberta next :P

The captain of the Canucks' affiliate is now the benevolent general Krog! All hail Krog and his glorious new regime.

Don't blame me, I voted for Haydar.

Any rehab stints for Canucks players are going to be fuuuuuuuu-un. I can see Gillis pulling up the AHL schedule, looking for a nice road trip that Raffi Torres can test his ankle on.

Krog and Haydar.

Funniest comedy duo from UNH since Chance Langton and Mike O'Malley.

Darren Haydar was a legend when I was in Middle School. Led the Milton Merchants to Royal Bank Cup. It's good to know he's still playing professionally somewhere.

So division opponents are going to have what? 12 games against each division foe? :censored: there were years when Peoria didn't venture as far East as Charlotte that often in the :censored: ing ECHL.

If Abbotsford moved, do you guys think Duluth MN or some other midwest city could get them. I was going to say Madison but thats a Badger hockey town.

Depends on if Calgary still owns them. I think the word is out among Midwestern arena operators now.

Given the preponderance of AHL teams in the Eastern half of North America, it is always going to be difficult to settle upon a divisional alignment that makes perfect geographic sense.

That said, I'd have placed Syracuse in the Western Conference North Division, Grand Rapids in the Western Conference Midwest Division, and Charlotte in the Eastern Conference East Division.

I know Cleveland is pretty much set to always have a team somewhere in the AHL, but if Colorado or someone could somehow see fit to put their farm team in Boulder or Colorado Springs, if for no other reason than to make Abbotsford not so lonely, that'd be kinda cool.

Boulder wouldn't be so bad... Hell, put that team in the Coors Event Center and you're good to go.

Colorado Springs, on the other hand... I don't know if their arena (Which is used for Colorado College men's hockey team) would be up to AHL standards (If there is any).
