Gridiron League of America

Let's take another crack at this...

Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham Forge

-I picture the logo to be that of Vulcan hammering an iron football on an anvil.

Boise, Idaho

Idaho Miners

-Idaho is known as the Gem State so it seems natural that a 49er-esque theme might come up.

Los Angeles, California

California Condors

-The Condor is the state bird of California. It's been endangered, but its making a great comeback.

Louisville, Kentucky

Kentucky Elk

-Kentucky is home to one of the largest herds of elf in the east. I picture antlers on their helmets like wings of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee Blitz

-Milwaukee having a very large German population, might appreciate a nickname such as this. "Blitz" is German for lightning and of course is a football term for defense.

New York/New Jersey

New York Juggernauts

-Also a term for football, but primarily in colloquial English usage is a literal or metaphorical force regarded as mercilessly destructive and unstoppable.

Norfolk, Virginia

Virginia Swashbucklers

-Keeping with the nautical theme. A twist on a pirate theme.

Omaha, Nebraska

Omaha Thunderbirds

-Nebraska's part of the Great Plains. The Thunderbird is part of the Lakota mythology. I picture a logo an uniform that is both respectful and pays homage to the legend.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Utah Stingers

-Utah is the Beehive State.

San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio Sidewinders

-It actually has several meanings: the Sidewinder Rattlesnakes that can be found in Texas, a type of quick-draw gun fighting and by extension a nickname for a quarterback.

We all have our little faults. Mine's in California.

I am going ahead and confirming that the Birmingham club will be called the Birmingham Vulcans after overwhelming support. I will keep the "votes" going for the next day or so and then make my decisions on the other remaining clubs. A Vulcans emblem will be unveiled soon.

Birmingham Vulcans Primary logo:

For my first emblem in this series, I decided to go with something simple but to the point. Vulcans is a name reference to a Vulcan god statue in the city of Birmingham. It was also the name of the former WFL club in the mid-1970s. The original logo was a stylized V with a football inside and a red flame arising from atop the ball. This time around I decided to go with something more relevant to Vulcan who is the blacksmith god of fire and volcanoes. Within the design is a blacksmith's sledgehammer with a red V in the background on a cobalt blue shield. I felt this would not only be a great way to symbolize and simplify such a complex figure in Roman mythology, but also be something really cool to have on a helmet and cap. In doing so, I took some inspirations from similarly designed logos by both the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL and the Portland Timbers of MLS.

Alright, I think enough time has passed on this to where I can make a decision on names. Obviously, the Vulcans won by an overwhelming margin. Others were a little bit different. Some had good support for certain names, some were more sporadic across the board. But, I'm ready to announce the names for the remaining clubs.

Boise Trappers

Los Angeles Gladiators

Louisville Stallions

Milwaukee Rough Riders (Heavy CCLSC favorite)

NY/NJ Union (Not many popular names with the CCSLC, but they were appropriate for the kind of vibe I was going for, therefore Union won out)

Norfolk Neptunes

Omaha Pioneers (It was a close one between Pioneers and Bombers, but Pioneers looked more popular)

Salt Lake Swarm (Very tough, but awesome choices. I felt Swarm sounded the most intimidating)

San Antonio Twisters

Ok, so a few things have changed since I first started this conceptual project months ago. There is a new logo which is heavily inspired by the AAFC's logo, added clubs, and some new names. To get this project started I wanted to post a map of the teams and their locations.

Just learning about your league. Love everything so far. Can't wait to see the teams, may I suggest Portland for a Northwest team? I say that even as a Seattle sports guy haha.

This Milwaukee native agrees. It has the added bonus of giving the team the MB initials like our other teams. Hopefully JH42XCC changes his mind because I'm not sure what Rough Riders is supposed to reference (Teddy Roosevelt getting shot here?).

Actually, Rough Riders (or Riders for short) would be a reference to Harley-Davidson, a motorcycle manufacturer founded and headquartered in Milwaukee.

I would like to have this league's 13th and 14th teams in Portland and Orlando respectively.

I was actually considering those two cities when creating this league. But, I decided that they were going to be "expansion" clubs the following season.
