Levi's Stadium: 49ers' new Santa Clara home gets a name in $220 million deal

SANTA CLARA -- Get ready for Levi's Stadium.

The San Francisco 49ers have scored the West Coast's biggest ever naming-rights deal, saying today that legendary San Francisco jeans-maker Levi Strauss & Co. will put its name on the team's new Santa Clara stadium when it opens next year.

The company will pay $220.3 million to the city of Santa Clara and the 49ers over 20 years, and Levi Strauss has the option of extending the deal for another five years for an additional $75 million or so. The total contract, which averages out to about $11 million per year, is believed to be at least the fourth highest in NFL history and is more than the naming-rights deals scored by the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Raiders and A's, Golden State Warriors and San Jose Sharks -- combined.

Who was it that made the suggestion that the Niners go with denim-colored pants?

Well...this just lends more credence to that...

I like it. And I can't wait to catch a game at the new park. I grew up going to games at Candlestick Park and it's an absolute dump. It'll be so nice to see the Niners play in a shiny new building that doesn't have viewing problems due to fog.

HEY GUYS I'M REALLY SMART AS FAR AS FOOTBALL PLAYERS GO LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME I PLAY VIDEO GAMES AND STUFF ASK ME ANYTHING ON REDDIT PROBABLY ALSO SOMETHING ABOUT NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON PLEASE GOD JUST PAY ATTENTION TO ME AND TELL ME HOW SMART I AM I'M REALLY SMART

It still beats listening to marginally literate guys who made it through college without ever going to class tweeting scripture every five minutes.

Kluwe can be a tool but he's very smart, articulate, and funny. And I maintain there is value to an NFL player (albeit a punter), sending the message that the NFL is not all a bunch of bigots.

As far as him getting cut...

I love Chris Kluwe. I am a Vikings fan. I agree with his stances about gay marriage and gay rights. I am troubled by an NFL that seems uncomfortable with players that have interests outside of football.

All that said, I feel that he allowed the distractions to interfere with his performance last year. Either that or he just had a bad year (though after the election, he seemed to improve some). I don't know whether to take Spielman on the level or not (that his views had nothing to do with the cutting)...I still think some of the NFL prefers Chris Culliver's attitude to Chris Kluwe's, but it would be hard for me not to admit that he was inconsistent last year. This is the same team that drafted a kicker to replace popular Ryan Longwell last year and it worked out tremendously. I don't know that this was a necessary move, but it is probably a good move.

As for Kluwe, I hope he gets a shot elsewhere. His ability warrants a shot, but he's not only going to have to kick the ball well, he's going to have to convince a team that he can be as focused on his job as he was in years past. If he's not focused on his job, then he risks another inconsistent year...and it's going to be a red flag. He could have worked for the cause (helping defeat the gay marriage amendment...which Minnesota did, becoming the first state to do so) in a bit more of a dignified manner and possible, the Vikes would not have used a pick on a Punter. But the bottom line is that he had a rough year...and he's a different kind of guy...one that does not eat/sleep/drink football...so I think it's going to be a red flag and I think he's kicked his last ball in the NFL. I hope some other (and more prominent) player steps up in a "you can play" kind of way with Kluwe and Ayanbadejo both probably done.

That's the key word - distractions. If you're going to create a buzz of whatever kind around your team, you'd better be more than a punter. I don't think anybody cares that Kluwe or any other player has beliefs or views. But part of being a professional is knowing when it's appropriate to express them, especially if they can in any way be viewed as controversial.

Just curious, what's your view on Tebow? His views seem to be a distraction to whatever team he's on.

If Kluwe's position necessitated a lifetime of near-constant head trauma, he'd probably think God created dinosaurs to eat gay people, too.

As per Jay Glazer, Ronde Barber is retiring after 16 seasons, of course all with the Buccaneers...

That's a bummer, but still kind of expected. It's too bad he didn't want to stick around for one more year, as I think the Bucs could've used his serivces. Despite his age, he's still quite adequate. And even if he still doesn't have much left, they could've used him to have a bit more depth in that secondary.

He'll be missed, but we'll see him again when he gets to Canton!

Just curious, what's your view on Tebow? His views seem to be a distraction to whatever team he's on.

Tebow could tone it down a bit, but I blame sports media more for his "distraction" factor. I don't agree with many of his views, but I don't think he's nearly as vocal about them as Kluwe is. I think what Kluwe says is more important; Christian athletes are a dime a dozen and Chris Cullivers of the league don't say "I don't want Christians in the locker room". There is real value to having a player (albeit a punter) sending the message that "we are not all ignorant," but as I said, Kluwe became obsessed with it to the point that it may legitimately have impacted his performance. You have to handle your work life well, regardless.

If Kluwe does not get any tryouts (which I really do not think he will), it will be too bad. I'd like to see a team give him a shot to have learned from how he balanced work and his other activities. We'll really never know whether it's because the NFL is "not ready for a pro-gay non-star athlete." Personally, I think the Ray Guy business may have been the final straw. I like Kluwe in part because of what the NFL does not like; he has other interests. If I am a coach/GM with Punter needs, I'd contact him and let him kick the ball. If he does OK, there'd be an interview part that would discuss, not his views, but his ability to come to the facility and focus on work. It seems weird to think that something like punting could be hurt by this, but he was very inconsistent last year.

Tebow is also done in the NFL and for the same reason: the distraction factor. And while I like Kluwe better, I have more sympathy for Tebow. Yeah, he thinks he's pretty damn special, but I really believe this media frenzy that started at Florida is doing him in. He sought some attention, but not like this. At this point, as soon as he takes the practice field, it's like Super Bowl week. Is he worthy of being a second or third string QB? I'd say "yes" based on that Denver run, but I don't think anyone wants the media circus for a backup QB. And it's really not his fault. Make no mistake HE IS NOT BEING BLACKBALLED BECAUSE OF HIS VIEWS. But he is because of the media-driven media circus. If I am a GM, I'd have to weigh the "quality 3rd string guy with outside shot at being a starter" vs. "media circus." I would not want to punish him, but I would not want it to hurt my team. Poor Tebow. He'd have been better off if the Broncos said "Manning's coming in, be his backup." Instead he goes to the most circus-like team in the league, gets totally misused and is now SOL. Too bad he did not end up in Jacksonville where at least the attention is muted. Like Kluwe, Tebow has non-football interests, for which players can be punished, but I think he's the best example ever of the media killing a player's chance.

I think both want to be in the league and do what they can to help a team. But Kluwe's 31 and has made a lot of money. I doubt he'd change anything if he could. I bet Tebow wishes he could somehow start over and deflect the attention.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

Well, the Chiefs just became my favorite AFC team. At Wisconsin-Milwaukee, we don't let a little thing like not having a football program stop us from sending players to the NFL! :D

Although it kind of sucks (for me) because if John Dorsey was still with the Packers, Harris would probably be suiting up in green and gold.

Maybe Kluwe just isn't a good punter. Wasn't he the guy who kept punting right to Hester, back when Hester was a threat?

Hopefully whatever judge he has ends up making an example of him. He needs to spend some serious time behind bars.
