  1. Today was the first time I got to see the Blue Jays light blue unis in person. On TV, they look too bright to me, but in person, they're just perfect. I'm not keen on the light-blue bill, but the rest of it is just the right shade. Well done - fix the cap and that could be the full-time road look.
  2. OMG can we either get another Washington (professional) Football Team thread, or a ban on rebrand ideas until there's some actual reason to have those convos?
  3. Keith Jones is actually a really sharp guy with a mind for the business and an eye for talent (both human and equine). He's funny and a prankster (at least when he did local radio) but with the right people around him to run the business stuff, he could be a good candidate to run hockey ops. You may see only one side of him on national broadcasts, but it wouldn't be the worst hire ever. Don't know anything about Olczyk. EDIT: And he once legit saved Eric Lindros' life, so there's that.
  4. I think this, like the Nashville Stars, is more of a name for the bid committee, not necessarily the name that the actual team would be called. Like how Olympic bid committees have separate logos from what the host city's official Olympic logo ends up being.
  5. As a former stadium employee who worked one, NYE games suck if you're the type that likes to make plans (like I was way back when.) At least a 4:25 game (3:25 local time?) gives everyone time to get home for whatever they're planning. A night game would blow - though it would be kinda neat for them to take a timeout to watch the ball drop near the end of the 4th quarter.
  6. They're not. Similar, but definite differences.
  7. And then there's the undesirable leftover games that really serve only the markets of the teams involved (like the aforementioned Texans v Jags.) Someone has to air that. Good point re: bidding. I assume since the deals are already signed, they can't charge the networks any more money, but they could give them a phony salary cap" and let them "bid" for games.
  8. "All games are free agents" - I wonder how that will work, considering the package was sold as AFC=CBS, NFC=FOX, select games on Thursday and SNF (NBC.) Seems to be a pretty dramatic shift to the model that would require a lot of sign off. Maybe there's some kind of draft? They'd need to do it well in advance to plan the travel for the production crews. I like not having to think, and I like that the pregame shows tend to focus on the package they cover. Will get used to it, just like anything, but I like the stability and reliability of knowing that non-prime-time games are usually on FOX unless they're playing an AFC team in Phila, in which case CBS. Word on the street is that the Eagles may be tapped for the Black Friday game for some reason, which could be great... or could be awful.
  9. The Suns can't seem to get out of their own way with their uniforms. The pre-Barkley set and Barkley set were fantastic. But since then, it's been a complete disaster of gray, silly-trendy (but not trendy) fonts, quarter-steps towards the Barkley set but afraid to commit, and (already mentioned, but worth repeating) silly-ass fonts. While that supposed leak is barely a half-step towards the Barkley era, it would be acceptable and an upgrade if they didn't insist on going with the ugliest numbers that they can possibly find (making them straight instead of following the angle is also a choice.) I just don't get it. Purple and orange is such a great pallete - but it's as if they go out of their way to use it as poorly as possible. I rarely say "just go back to", as I think it's generally the worst approach to correcting, but this is a case where I'd absolutely recommend it, because they've proven that they can't be trusted with making original designs. I understand there's silly restrictions against "going back", but even if they went with something that made them look like the Great Value Barkleys, that would probably be better than what they could do from scratch.
  10. per TruColor, the brown has changed several times since '99. IIRC, at one point it was called "seal brown" and even lighter (maybe the original franchise). 2007-2009 on left, current on right:
  11. Yep. I disagree with white or yellow pants. I think matching royal is 100% the way to go, but the black balance is a little off. I'm usually a believer that the belt and socks/stirrups should match, but this may be a case where that doesn't work (I certainly wouldn't push for a black belt over the yellow one.) Black socks with a yellow-blue striping pattern would work well with royal pants.
  12. can they do decals over brims? Seems like that would be cheaper than getting all new helmets just for a uniform that'll be worn a handful of times.
  13. I think there's plenty of wealth in the East Bay to support a well-run team. There's a ton of people with >$200k jobs (which are the same jobs that pay half as much in most other cities) being pushed out of SF and into the East Bay / Oakland (source... I know several first hand.) There's certainly more diversity in Oakland from both a demographic and socio-economical standpoint, but I have less than no doubt it could support a team if the stadium was right and the team was run well and not like it has been. Saying Oakland is nothing but poors is simply inaccurate.
  14. You've made a few comments like this - I'm not sure you know much about Oakland. EDIT: at least the people. Can't say about the city government.
  15. Eagles D'Andre Swift will be the first player to wear 0 for them since his usual number (and its reverse) are taken.
  16. I find it laughable that players are concerned about that and then do dumb things that only dummies do like this:
  17. Phillies president Dave Dombrowski is also part of the Nashville group, and when hired, said he didn't anticipate anything happening there for years, but if something changed, he'd leave the Phillies when the time was right to get to work on that bid.
  18. That would work. I still don't like sleeve wordmarks, but I get that's just how it is these days. They could put "ARIZONA" instead of "CARDINALS" on the red one just to keep with what they were claiming they were accomplishing by putting the silly-ass huge wordmark on the front.
  19. I still don't see where the "v-seam" on the front has any benefit. If there's a legit performance advantage by making them lighter and if the holes actually do that, then I guess that's fine - but the seam has a (minor, but still) impact on the actual look of some of the uniforms due to wordmarks and numbers being pushed down. Just seems unnecessary, when the marketing around the previous template was that the lack of seams is what made them great.
  20. True, but the best way to "start looking elsewhere" is to put out as much good tape as possible, and he denied himself that opportunity. It's just like "meaningless" preseason games. They're not meaningless for the players who may know that they're getting cut, but want to play well on film so that other teams can see them. I'm not going to beat a dead horse and go on about this because I like the guy, I just think it looks weak to pull yourself from a start that would only have benefited you - in multiple ways, even if not with Washington - to make.
  21. It didn't work for Heinicke, who ended up on the street despite being obviously being the people's choice and one of the few players that people seemed to genuinely tune in to see on that team. I certainly liked the guy. I just don't see how winning at chess ends up with you losing your job and any chance at ever being a starter.
  22. Yeah... on a Thursday Amazon game.
  23. I don't know why it's expected that a veteran QB "mentor" his eventual replacement. What does that even mean? Sit in 1-on-1 meetings with him and tell him how to play QB better? I think things like this are non-stories that are crafted when someone wants to put out negative press about a player, whether deserving or not. I don't know the first thing about Tannehill, but this wouldn't concern me. And that's a great reason to get rid of Heinicke. It's one thing when it's a HOF QB looking to take a day off give a young guy a chance in a meaningless game, but Heinicke needs every opportunity he can get to prove himself, and the number one thing I think any coach wants in a player is that they want to play and compete - and this guy went against his coaches and said he didn't want to play? That likely sealed his fate in DC - and if not, it should have. He's in no position to do that, no matter now noble he thinks he's being. Instant cut.
  24. I've had time to let it sink in, and I still think it's awful. The college-sized wordmark is still crap. The sleeve-wordmarks are still crap. The complete mismatch between home and road and alternate is crap. The leotard look is crap. The solid-red pants are crap. But the helmet is cool.
