  1. Much like my proposal that ended nonsensical realignment derailments, maybe there should be the "Pointless Uniform Predictions Outpost" thread. It's one thing to speculate at throwback games, but when people are posting helmet/jersey/pants/sock combos for all 17 games, it's a little much. I'm not sure if nobody cares, but I can't imagine why anyone would. I certainly don't.
  2. There's people that think he is worth his contract? Take his conduct out of the picture and it's still an absurd contract. I assumed that even Browns fans knew right away that the odds were it'll end up being an albatross around their neck.
  3. They really just need to win three straight... starting right now.
  4. Why would they waste helmets and uniforms on at least 40 players that aren't going to even make the team?
  5. while I like those numbers (they’re not really futura tho, are they?), I never thought of them as a mid-century team. I guess because I grew up in the Moon, Haywood Jeffires, et al
  6. Why will the boards crash? It's a throwback. Which inherently means we've already seen it.
  7. I think they were named as a prophetic homage to Haku and Tama.
  8. The bolded part is the problem. I'm seeing hits called on basic plays where the fielder simply botches it. I'm looking for a clip of yesterday's Edmundo Sosa botch, which was called a double. Even giving the batter an overwhelming "benefit of the doubt", it could have been a single and advancement on error. I heard somewhere that there was some official communication to scorers to give even more "benefit of the doubt" to hitters (though I can't prove that) - but they're giving benefit when there's no doubt.
  9. Lebron switching back to #23. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/38016718/lebron-james-change-jersey-number-back-23-honor-bill-russell Assuming the Lakers retire his jersey, I wonder if they do #6 for him, or just kinda "forget" about those two years, and say it's retired for Bill Russell and that's it.
  10. The scoring system is completely out of wack this year. Rumor is that MLB has told the official scorers to lean more in favor of hitters when it comes to borderline error/hit calls (so that offensive stats will be higher, to push whatever narrative they're trying to sell). But it's become completely absurd. I just saw a classic error - where the ball hit the 2B in the glove and he simply didn't squeeze it and it bounced off his glove and into the outfield. Runner gets to second, and it's ruled a double. It's a textbook error. A similar thing happened in the earlier game when Trea Turner (who I'm not sure has actually played or watched baseball before) cost the Phillies 3 runs with a bonehead play (that should have ended the inning, but he messed up and then the next batter homered) that even he admitted should have been scored an error. Instead, there's 3 earned runs on the pitcher's line, when they should have been unearned. I'm not going to lose sleep over scoring, but I'd be really pissed off if I was a pitcher who's stats are inflated due to this push to make it seem like there's more hitting. John Kruk just joked that Tony Gwynn would hit .600 with the new scoring. While that's clearly hyperbole, I don't think .400 would be unreachable. EDIT Also, these oven-mitt things really need to be regulated. Idiot rookie Trea Turner was just picked off for the 3rd time this year (because he's apparently brand new to the game and doesn't know how to do literally anything competently) and in the replay, you can see that there's so much room in the oven mitt that it "squishes" as he's diving back. Technically he was probably safe if they counted the full length of the mitt, but logically he was out by at least an inch (which is what they rightfully called) because there's no way his actual hand was on the base when he was tagged. In conclusion, Trea Turner blows, and it's actually kinda fun watching him completely melt down. At this point, I actively root for his failures.
  11. I didn’t realize that. I’m sure there will be a lot of bidders. The Phillies can make room in their outfield, and they don’t care about money, so I guess as long as it doesn’t cost them one of their top 2 pitching prospects, they can try to work something out. But they don’t have the farm system that lots of other teams have, so I figure there will be better offers. The only thing the Phillies have going for them is the ability to absorb unlimited salary.
  12. This might simply be local hopeful thinking, but the Phillies just called up their #6 prospect, and the word on the street is that the Padres covet him, and since they're in town this weekend, the Phillies are showcasing him to be a part of a potential Juan Soto deal. Given the Phillies salary situation, I think it's highly unlikely - if not impossible - for this to happen (why would the Padres trade Soto so soon - didn't they extend him?) but it's kind of surprising that they'd call this one particular guy up, when there's other options that probably make more sense right now. Maybe the plane-ride thing didn't mean anything and is perfectly normal for after an ASG... or maybe it did mean something. Guess we'll find out. But again - why would SD trade him?
  13. I agree, that's a good case for it. I think the Raiders pull off the solid white pretty well, but that's also their brand. Off the top of my head I'm not sure who else has just a plain solid-color dark jersey, but that's probably a rare instance of when I'm cool with the white having a different design.
  14. Imagine looking in the mirror and thinking this is how you want to present yourself. If they require those slob shirts, then there's a flaw with the jerseys and that should be fixed so that they don't need these absurdly-long / loose shirts. The Eagles tried this in '96. I didn't get it then, and I don't get it now. Glad they corrected: Check out the sock wordmark!! Never noticed that. I don't think it ever made it to a real game.
  15. I wonder how many people that love these are old enough to remember when they were a complete laughing stock in them. Team performance shouldn't have anything to do with how we evaluate a uniform, but even all these years later, I can't separate the look from the joke of a team they were before they changed to the red/pewter. It's a fun thing to see every now and then (though I mostly remember them in white tops, not orange... I wonder what the stats are on that, but I feel like they went WAH a lot in those days) but I think a full return would get old quick. With the exception of the mono-pewter, they're in their "forever" look right now. Oh - and they can wear them every game... if they put in the papers and change in two seasons. So let's not get on the league's case here.
  16. Brian Dawkins had a “quadrafecta” against Houston in 02. (forgive formatting, copy/pasting on mobile). This is statistically less common than a cycle. Also just a flukey and, despite being statistically arousing, just as meaningless. He had a good game. That’s all. Fumble Recovery Interception Touchdown Reception Sack
  17. baseball isn’t poker. That’s not even remotely a similar comparison.
  18. But it means literally nothing other than a guy got 4 hits in a game that just randomly happened to be one of each kind. I don’t see how it’s any symbol of pride (or shame in the case where someone doesn’t do it). im sure there’s been Reds players with games with more impact than hitting for a cycle. Obviously this kid is great and has a heck of a future in front of him, and this has nothing to do with the Reds specifically, I just don’t get why a “cycle” is anything anyone even cares about for any reason other than it looks neat in a game recap or box score. It’s just a random thing that occasionally happens - like if we invented a thing called the “sampler”, where a pitcher has a looking strikeout, swinging strikeout, walk, balk, HBP, pickoff, and a pitch-clock strikeout in the same game.
  19. Does a new owner even matter at this point? I was under the impression that once the gov signed the bill, it was a binding-done deal and the only remaining formality is the owners approving it (and I can’t believe that the LV funding bill had a contingency in it that allowed for the A’s to get out without penalty if the owners rejected the move… which they won’t.)
  20. Serious question - why does anyone care about a cycle? Realmuto had one a couple of weeks ago and I don’t get why anyone cared. It’s just a statistical rarity, but not a great feat. Getting 4 HR, or 2HR and 2 singles could be a better use of 4 hits than a cycle. It’s just a “thing that happens” - not like a no-hitter or perfect game, which is an indicator of a dominant performance. Also - I wonder how many times a guy could have hit for a cycle if he stopped at 2nd on his 2nd triple, or stopped at 1st on what would have been a double. Or refused to round all the bases on a home run.
  21. damn I read too fast (had been flying for 10hrs.. and being slipped free beers by one of the flight attendants… while the other one tried to hit me for $8 per!) so I was and a bit worn down when I saw the article). I thought the middle was turned, so it looked kinda like an eagle head. Didn’t realize it was just 3d, and essentially the same. That’s good - it’s a great logo as is.
