The more rugby I watch the more I like it. Those guys can outplay 98% of the NFL players. What exactly does this mean? Do you mean outplay them in a game of rugby? American football? Athleticism.Soccer says hello. No, seriously, rugby does require a much higher level of athleticism than gridiron, if for no other reason than the relative flow of play. Gridiron is brief bursts of power, but rugby players have to keep that going far longer. Remember when the Fridge was so nicknamed for his ridiculously outsized weight? Rugby is HUGE in the Sacramento area, and some of the high school best rugby teams in the country come out of Sacramento. Four teams have yet to be confirmed.USA Rugby is lagging behind on naming a national coach, thus all of those who applied for PRORugbywon't commit to PRORugby until the national coach is named. Plus, the average player salary seems to be just $25K, so a coach cannot be much more.But, if you paid attention over the last 6 weeks, the partners mentioned in their veey few interviews that TV money was not their focus. The majority of the coaches have been chosen and committed, but can not be announced until venue contracts are finalized. The majority of the playing rosters have been identified for some time, and contacted regarding availability. The response from players and coaches has been overwhelmingly positive. Combines are an opportunity for players not previously identified to raise their hands, but are by no means the principal method of player selection. Negotiations have also been ongoing with a smaller subset of international players who have also indicated their availability. As a single entity league, all players and coaches are centrally contracted by the league and so the league determines who plays where. Thanks again for all your support and patience.So like others, they are using their "PRO Day/combines" as cash grabs and the rugby rube is falling for it. Quote When asked why there haven't been any announcements recently Director of Rugby Steve Lewis pointed to the complexity of agreeing to venues, something he admitted was a bit of a learning progress for the league. Lewis emphasized that the league has agreements ready to go for three venues that should be signed soon. He also stressed that it's not as simple as agreeing to use a venue on specific dates. "We know where we want to play but this first season is very much venue driven and it's where we can play. It's not like we have a magic wand and we can do whatever we want. There is a process." It's starts with finding the right sized facility. That means no NFL stadiums and no stadiums that are too small. Another major factor in the facility choice is the turf. World Rugby is starting to enforce their stringent turf standards from professional competitions this year and currently the U.S. only has a couple of facilities, including the new turf at Notre Dame and Glendale, that meet the requirement. With more and more facilities turning to turf over grass it limited some of the options, especially in the Northeast. According to Lewis once the venue was picked then came the negotiations over dates. Once that was finished came a number of small items that are important but are often overlooked. These include things like parking, staffing, whether there can be alcohol, who does ticket sales, etc. In Sacramento, PRO Rugby has partnered with Bonny Field to take care of those things but not all of them are taken care of in San Francisco. The same is true in the new facilities where PRO Rugby had to negotiate over every single item. In the end those things took a lot of time, something that Lewis agreed was extremely frustrating. And if they're having issues on the large scale, I assume that getting a practice site is just as difficult. That said, I still doubt that they have $$$ since they are still hosting "tryouts" after they stated months ago that they knew who they were going to sign. So three California teams, two combines, and only one coach named with an April start expected. The proposed six team league may only be five teams with just one team on the East Coast and one in the Rockies. OK. The USA home games are in Houston(BBVA Compass Stadium), the Austin area (Round Rock Express' stadium), and Ft. Lauderdale (Lockhart Stadium). I could see maybe Houston on the short list. High school rugby MAY be on the upswing, like LaCrosse, but this is like you said, not going the way they thought. I guess they have a venue to play in so that may have been a huge factor. Well, yeah, it could work, but the Jackets comparison is a bit unfair seeing as they had the Chill in the ECHL for awhile and a few other minor league teams set up in C-Bus from time to time. Plus, you have OSU hockey which draws pretty well. Rugby? I don't know. I may be wrong but I think the only sources for the sport are, of course, OSU and some high schools. They can bus between San Francisco and Sacramento and can hop on a Southwest or Virgin America flight to San Diego if needed, but it's not like these financiers will charter a plane to Columbus. Airline costs are gonna hurt them more. Plus, when originally presented, TV was an afterthought and they were going to show games digitally. This is as big of a mess as any alt-football startup with the same amount of sycophants thinking it will work when they never buy a ticket.
