Bob5151
The Philadelphia Flyers have used the same primary logo since their inception in 1967. This was also their jersey logo until 1981/82. In 1981/82, they switched just the jersey logo to this alternate version that uses slightly more angled wings. The original logo is still the Primary and is used everywhere; at center ice, on merchandise, on TV graphics, even the logo stickers on the players' helmets use this logo. The alternate, angled version seems to only be used on the front jersey crest. Does anyone know why they started to use, and continue to use this other logo on the jersey fronts only? Personally, I actually like the angled wing jersey logo more. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!
BBTV
I think they switched earlier than you said. Here's a 1970 sweater that is close to the current angled version. You can see the difference in how the curve in the wing ends abruptly and becomes horizontal (albeit the bottom wing is definitely more round, like the official logo.) I know that early on, they removed the black outline from the sweater crest - I can only imagine because it looked better on the white sweater without the unnecessary border. My guess is that this was just a manufacturing issue and not intentional, and the team just decided to keep it that way forever. BBTV
Here's something else weird I just found. Look at the top and bottom wing on this 1994 Kevin Dineen sweater: "The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed." The jersey crest has always been slightly different than the logo (there are a few teams who do this for whatever reason). The jersey crest has always had the “corners” on the bottom edges of the feathers, and the ends of the lines have always been chopped flat instead of round. Those were likely just construction modifications at first, making the cutting and or embroidery easier to execute, but that version of the logo persists as the jersey crest even though the technology exists to replicate the logo much better nowadays. I also think that simple logos tended to get the short end of the stick whenever the artwork was digitized. You get this “copy of a copy” effect where each subsequent version is degraded a little more and you end up losing the craftsmanship and quality of the original. The “day one” art for the Flyers’ logo is beautiful; elegant curves, chunkier separations (of uniform weight) that hold up better against the heavy positive form, no unnecessary outline (amazing how much faster and more free the logo looks when it’s not caged in by the black outline), just a flawlessly executed piece of mid century art. The difference is slight, but it’s everything to a logo this simple. The_Admiral
Yeah, I see no purpose for that black outline. I feel like tradition is the only thing keeping it there. 53 minutes ago, andrewharrington said: The jersey crest has always been slightly different than the logo (there are a few teams who do this for whatever reason). The Blackhawks are one of these teams, and it used to be even worse: the Indian Head was so hard to replicate back in the day that, if you dig around youtube and find old games, it almost seems like no two graphics were the same. At one point, I think I even saw an old circa-'80s Black Hawks banner that had the modern logo. This version, which doesn't appear on the mothership but does appear on the facade of the United Center, is the closest approximation to what the Hawks' sweater crest looked like in the '80s and '90s, though the crest also had a skin-tone outline that never appeared in graphics. Everything's pretty much standardized to the "smiling" Indian Head now, but the chain-stitched Indian Head uses a coppery skin tone on authentic sweaters, while display/print versions and lower-quality replicas use this sickly yellow-orange that really does the so-called Greatest Logo In Sports no favors at all. Just as the Flyers should standardize their logo to what appears on their uniform, the Hawks should try to do the same and lose the yellow-orange skin. EDIT: and how could I forget the discrepancies in the tomahawk-C secondary? What a mess. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Bayne
The logo on that old program cover is fantastic. All hockey logos should strive to be as simple, bold, elegant and easily-recognisable as that. I'm Danny fkn Heatley, I play for myself. That's what fkn all stars do. ScubaSteve
Somewhat related. I don't see it mentioned at all that the Flyers are the only American professional sports team to have one logo as long as they have (that has also remained the same since its inception). Some might argue (according to this site) that there was a slight orange shade change at one point, but I don't really think that counts. The actual primary logo remains unchanged for over 40 years. That really speaks to the design, if you ask me

They not only have the same logo for all this time, but also the same shorts design and they're one year older than Flyers.

philly97flyer
Really wish the Flyers would modify their uniforms for the darker orange, more accurate logo, and number font.
CheeseHusker
IMO the best permutation they had was the last pre-Cooperall set, circa 1980-81. The white on the sleeves was slightly wider at this point so the numbers would fit, as opposed to the overlapping numbers they have now (and had during the Cup years), but the jerseys were still in the original style. I think I'd prefer them if they dropped the contrasting nameplates. Seems like that was retro gimmick that's kind of run its course.
The_Admiral
Contrasting nameplates on orange are good, they're terrible on white. The best set was the '80s-2000s set. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
AnPheitseog
I contrasting name plates. That said, glad it's gone back to only the Flyers. Would look awful overused. Formerly known as DiePerske

In my unbiased opinion, that set is one of the top uniforms in NHL history. It worked in any era, and could even work on today's templates with only a few tweeks. I'm not sure which orange I like better though - I like the darker shade from when the jerseys were thick poly, then there was a slightly lighter shade during the airknit days, and now the really bright one. I've really warmed to the current shade - it looks great on TV - though the original darker one looks really good up close and in person. BBTV
Double post... but... 1) the black version of that uniform sucked. It ruined games on TV. Burn it. 2) they made it relatively unscathed into the Edge era, but the loss of hem stripe and the reduction of connection point from sleeve to collar really hurt. 3) the contrasting nameplates on the whites are freaking horrible. It's still one of the top uniforms in the league, but it would be much better without that 'feature'. I'm used to it on the orange, but I wouldn't mind if it was dropped from there too. 4) I've felt that all of their 'special uniforms' are bad - mostly because they mess with their signature feature, which is contrasting sleeves. Going with a yoke just isn't their thing, and solid sets (like their current black one) remind me of the practice jerseys. 5) interesting that Clarke is kinda wearing a hybrid - old numbers on that template. There were at least one or two transition years when they started experimenting with black trim, but I didn't realize that those numbers ever existed with that uniform. I'd like to see the back. The_Admiral
Yeah, I've never seen an alternate for the Flyers that I've liked, whether black (the worst), one-off, or otherwise. The Flyers have a pervasive no-nonsense aesthetic* that doesn't really allow for much brand extension. Either shade of orange besides the safety orange they wear now works for me. That's a bit much. EDIT: *Well, they did until they came up with that stupid mascot that everyone online pretends is a socialist for some reason. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

CheeseHusker
They wore the stadium one again tonight. I hope this isn't a trend. No matter how much they push the special jerseys, none of them ever look as good as the standard ones to me. The black version of the 80s jersey would have been better if it had more orange on it.... it was basically black and white with a tiny bit of trim. I'm glad they moved on from it anyway.... I just associate it now with playoff failure. Not that other combos of late have been any more successful...
Timaa
Just clip the wings like the jersey on the right and it won't be a problem.
