Columbus Crew SC are the MLS Cup Champions for 2020. They'll defend their title in a brand new 20,000-seat soccer-specific stadium in 2021. Expansion side Austin FC - Major League Soccer's 27th side - is also set to take the pitch in the new year. Canadian Premier League club York 9 FC will compete as York United Football Club. What other developments will 2021 bring to the pro soccer scene in the United States and Canada?

While the club isn't set to begin play until 2022, USL League One expansion team Central Valley Fuego Futbol Club is hoping to begin construction of a pop-up soccer-specific stadium and adjacent training and development center in 2021. Team ownership and management are considering two locations for the project: downtown Fresno and in Madera County.

The preferred downtown location would be on three parcels of land that currently play host to Selland Arena, Valdez Hall, and an adjacent parking lot at the Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center site. The Madera County location would be near Valley Children's Hospital.

The first step towards potentially securing the downtown site occurred on Thursday. That's when the Fresno City Council unanimously voted to declare Selland Arena, Valdez Hall, and the adjacent ground level parking lot land as surplus property, which allows the city to make said parcels available to buyers.

Major League Soccer has notified the Major League Soccer Players Association that it will invoke the Force Majeure clause in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement that was negotiated this past June. Said step obligates the parties to negotiate modifications to the existing CBA - in good faith - over the next 30 days. If said talks fail to produce a new agreement, the CBA negotiated in June could be terminated.

Per MLS Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott:

"Unfortunately, based on the assessment of public health officials, it is clear that the impact of COVID-19 and the restrictions on attendance at sporting events will continue into the 2021 MLS season. We recognize the impact that the pandemic has had on our players and appreciate their efforts to restart and complete the 2020 season, but, like the other leagues in the United States and Canada, MLS needs to address the ongoing challenges caused by the pandemic and will engage in good-faith discussions with our players about ways to manage the significant economic issues we are facing."

The MLS Players Association statement in response:

"Today, less than one week after players completed the most challenging season in MLS history, the league notified the Major League Soccer Players Association that it intends to invoke the Force Majeure clause in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

"This action sets in motion a process that could results in the league and its owners abandoning the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement and commitments made to players for the second time in less than nine months. It comes in advance of any negotiations and at a time when many players are enjoying time away with their loved ones for the first time in almost a year.

"After a 2020 season of extreme sacrifice, immeasurable risk to personal health, and a remarkable league-wide effort to successfully return to play, this tone-deaf action by the league discredits the previous sacrifices made by players and the enormous challenges they overcame in 2020."

Stay tuned...

Need to strike. Cant even give the owners an inkling that they can rip up a contract not even a year after signing it.

An MLS strike would have to be the hardest one to pull off. I don't think it would be that hard for the owners to find scabs, both foreign and domestic.

It wasn't actually signed yet. Regardless, they can't expect the players to go back to the previous CBA.

Messi and Suarez in Salt Lake City! Scenes!

Can't really imagine Messi, or Barca for that matter, in anything but the most marquee of markets, and I don't see those teams being up for sale any time soon. Nor do any heretofore empty markets seem right, save maybe San Diego?

Suarez has been linked to Seattle for forever. I can't see Messi not in New York, LA or Miami. SLC should would be a surprise!
