Eagles hockey design

Ok, my boss asked me to work on a concept for his new hockey team, to be named the Eagles. The team decided to go with red, white, and blue, against his better wishes (he's apparently been named captain, but it sounds like a weird bunch), blue being the colour of their breezers and helmets.

Anyhow, thanks to our own Pantone, I've played with the colours a bit. I decided to do a bit of a different angle than most eagle head logos, and... well, I liked it when I left the office, but looking at it at home here, I'm not so sure now.

The eye on the left side is still bothering me, I'm not sure where to place that so that it looks right. I'm also thinking I need to make the part of the face that's to the left of the beak a bit less pronounced, so the head doesn't look so round.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

i'll be straight...it's better than what i can come up with right now but at the same time there are a few problems.  mainly i don't like the beak, but it's hard to get beaks how you want em, ya know? :)

Mockba you do great work, and I know you can fix this to be perfect. But, to be honest, that thing scares the plop outta me. I really don't know how I would go about fixing it up. Take a look at some other eagle logos. Philadelphia Eagles and Saginaw Spirit are some real good ones.

Maybe find a picture of an eagle at that angle on the internet.

The top half of his beak should hook over the bottom half for one... I am impressed with the ambitious project you have chosen.

That's exactly how I decided on doing it at this angle. :)

To be frank, and keep in mind I rarely comment on other peoples' work, that eagle looks kinda Picasso-ish, ya know? All angles at once?

Another good logo to take a look at, poor coloring and design issues aside, is that Colorago Eagles logo from some minor hockey league...CHL?

Hm, I guess what I'm hearing from everyone is, if you're going to do an Eagle head, do what everyone else has done and do it in profile.  That's what I was trying to escape from doing, but I'll have to give that a try.

The second one looks better, but it just seems weird from that angle. If you don't want to do it "profile" style, you could do it from a "straight-on" style like the Ravens main logo (not the one on their helmets)...

ok first of all i'm not an artist by any means and i really don't get any satisfaction from putting down others, you obviously put a lot of time and effort into the logo and while i like the whole concept of the Eagle head, really it looks like a cloud with a beak to me ???

Naw, it's cool.  This is the kind of stuff I want to hear.

Roger, as for that one... eh, I dunno, I've never liked that.  But I found a cool photo to base a full-body logo on:

I just like it better spacially than the directly forward look.

I still haven't given up on that head logo; Puckguy's been helping me tweak it.  But, I am working on at least two designs for it, so a full-body one will be one of those.

I think maybe the head needs to be flattened out a bit.  His head looks a little too puffy.  Also I think the beak needs to be a little wider.  I think you're on the right track and I like how you're trying to be original.  I thnk a touch up here and there and you'll be in good shape.

In case colours make a difference, here's a version using the Thrashers colours:

Weird-angled-eagle-head, Thrash-style

(Thanks to Puckguy for the suggestion, and the uber-cool Pantone for the proper colours.)

I'm working on the full-body version now, I have the basic silhouette done thusfar, but no detailing yet:

Full eagle, shadow-style

I'm starting out with the Thrashers' colours on this one, 'cause like Puckguy, I think their jerseys will be the best to put this on.
