Team Appreciation.

Ive found that lately ive really been starting to like the Bengals. I like how they play, i like the chemestry they show, and i like a lot of their players. Not a huge deal, but even as early as last year i really didnt like this team. It just kinda caught my attention because i feel this way about a lot of teams that win.

Now im not gonna go and ditch my allegiance to the Pewter Pirates and run off into the Jungle untill they start to suck again, but i am starting to take a casual liking to the team. I feel its OK because its always awesome to see any team, but especially a team that has such a history for losing, do well. And on top of that, they really make the game look good.

My question to you is, how do you feel when you see others who take a liking for teams that they previously had no interest in before? Do you feel it is just shameless bandwagoning, or do you feel its OK because its just easier to appreciate teams who win?

yes.

So your saying you have absolutely no right to even have any appreciation for any other team other than yours? So if your team wasnt in the Super Bowl, you wouldnt watch it?

Well, the sudden success of a team can sometimes have a lasting effect. I'm sure you of all people notice how a surprising amount of people that have remained on the Buccaneer bandwagon, especially those that just hopped on during the Super Bowl season.

My situation with the Patriots has somewhat of the same case. Before they won their first Super Bowl, I didn't even consider them as a thought. Yet somehow this wild card team was able to reach the Super Bowl against the overwhelming Rams. For some unknown reason, I picked the Patriots to win that game. Ever since that decision, I've acted as the advocate for the team since then. And now, I am pretty excited about how the Patriots have played recently. It's now this partnership, I guess...

With the Bengals, I guess it is okay. Considering how poor their recent history was, it is just a benefit to the sport as a whole for them to be at the level they are, expecially with how entertaining they are. Even the shenenigans of Chad are actually fun, not egotistical like a T.O. or Moss.

However, some bandwagoning is rather annoying. Look at the Falcons. Once Vick came along, people who couldn't even tell you who the Falcons were jumped on board. It wasn't your normal bandwagoning, it was your "A QB running?! I must be a part of this" and "Vick and the...what's their team name?" type. Yet I bet if the Falcons don't make the playoffs, people will start dropping off the wagon like a storm of bricks.

i've remained neutral for every super bowl i've watched (except XXXVIII, where i rooted for the panthers, since i am now a carolinian), unless a team i absolutely despise is in it.

i can enjoy the game and not have to have a rooting interest in it. but that's just me, i suppose.

Thats EXACTLY my feeling on this. And yes, i did notice that after the Bucs won the Super Bowl the level of fans rose tremendously. Ive been a Bucs fan since 94 and it was a miracle if i met another Bucs fan untill 2002, now theyre pretty common

As long as you don't abandon your old team and start sporting all manner of new team apparel I don't think your a bandwagoner. Nothing wrong with wearing a Bucs jersey while talking about how good another team is and apaying attention. It's a big league, there is lots out there to like.

If you were to start wearing orange stripes and yelling "Lets go Bengals!!" guy, then you'd be a dirty deserter, and we'd have to ban ya.

I think it's nice to see teams that historically are bad teams succeed and make the playoffs now and then. I think that Marvin Lewis has done a great job of taking an embarassing franchise and turning it into a respecftul and somewhat dominant team.

Am I jumping on the Bengals bandwagon? Hell, no. I'm a Patriots fan first and foremost. But I still think it's good to see different teams be rewarded with good seasons now and again. In the 80s and 90s, for the most part it was the same teams in the playoffs every year. It gets very boring and stale. New teams in the mix shake up the status quo, and entice more fans to watch the game, because it's getting less predictable.

It depends on your level of interest. Are you bailing on your team to go to a winner? Or are you just having fun watching another team or two?

If you were to bail out on the Bucs and become a Bengals fan then you are indeed a bandwagon jumper and that is the worst kind of sports scum. Dallas and Pittsburgh have the most of this type of fan. It's really too bad that the true fans have to put up with it but I guess it comes with the territory for those teams. I imagine the Patriots have experienced the same thing over the last few years as did the 49ers in the 80's. I saw it happen with The Indians in the mid 90's. I never take such fans seriously.

On the other hand...If you just enjoy watching other teams play because you like to watch that particular team's style or players or the fact that they have come out of nowhere etc. then you are simply a sports fan. It's normal don't sweat it.

Hell, there are teams I watch just because I like their uniforms.:D

This year I have found myself drawn to games that feature quality teams. I have been watching the Colts and Seahawks this year just because they are fun teams to watch especially the way peyton manning can manage a game. At the end of the day I still live and die with the Rams but I'll admit they haven't been the easiest or most fun team to watch this season. I miss the greatest show on turf.

As for the Bengals, I'll pull for them just because its cool to finally see that organization on the winning side of the league.

There is nothing wrong with 'liking' other teams.

I think the policy of having your one, favorite, die-hard fan of team, then a collection of other teams you like and respect is fine. In any given week, i can pick a team i like more out of about 3/4th the total games.

For instance, I am a Falcons fan. Period. Thats who I follow, tailgate, cheer for. But, I also like the Titans, Texans, and Eagles. Why? Each has their own story. But none of which come before my Falcons.

Having second-tier liked teams is fine. Joel is just sore his team blows so fluffing hard.

please clarify

I should have said in Ohio Dallas and Pittsburgh have the most "bandwagon" fans. These front runner fans jump on the bandwagon when The Steelers or Cowboys are doing well then jump right off again when things aren't going so well.

It's not a knock against true Cowboys or Steelers fans. They are two of the marquee teams in the NFL so the front runners come out in droves when they win then disappear when they lose.

Damn right, it's already being emptied. Some at my school jumped on the Panthers bandwagon, which made me absolutely sick.

With that being said, I agree with Paynomind. I'm a die-hard, kill-you-if-you-speak-bad-about-the Falcons fan, but I've liked the Bengals like 1/456468th of how much I liked the Falcons since Ki-Jan "Obi-Wan" Carter was there. So yeah, I took a little celebratory time when the Bengals won their division.

I got a big bad bandwagon story for ya.

My freshman year in High School, it was just after the Rams cheated..I mean..won the Super Bowl over the Titans. Around here (indiana), you could NOT get away from Rams Fans, it was sickening.

Then, the Falcons get Vick, and all these idiots jump on the Falcons bandwagon. Unfortunately, anyone seeing me randomly walking down the street in my ye olde Jamal Anderson jersey instantly branded me as a bandwagonner.

"I LIVED IN ATLANTA FOR GOD'S SAKE" I would tell them..but meh.

Now that the Falcons are back to sucking, and Colts are winning..guess what..Colts crap everywhere.

Before this year, I only knew about 8 Colts fans..now, I know 35. And I see more everyday.

However, the worst bandwaggoner is the people who say "I always rooted for them".

Yeah, you wore blue and white under your navy and gold.
