brinkeguthrie
I'd really like to see a video of it.. whent he article says he 'underhanded fliped the bat' its tough to picture this being quite as malicious as we all pictured when we read the headline. Here it is...it's bad. He really whipped it at the ump.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQk0w2E0kf8...0Delmon%20Young

Even had he not hit the ump, just the action of throwing the bat at him would have gotten him a severe punishment. I saw, I came, I left.
TurnTwo
As much as I hate to say this as a Yankees fan I don't see how this is any different than Roger Clemens throwing the broken bat at Mike Piazza. Sure, Roger didn't hit Mike but if he had it would have been the same thing, maybe even worse considering the bat was broken and jagged.Clemens did not recieve any suspension for his actions. Apparently he was throwing the shard back to the bat boy. Young doesn't have this excuse to rely upon seeing as he threw the bat away from his dugout. Don't get me wrong I think he should be suspended for at least 25-30 games, I just wonder how come this is such a big deal when the Clemens-Piazza incident didn't draw nearly as much punishment. Gary
a year or more suspension is a bit much but I would suspend him for at least 2 months and have him go through anger management and severe therapy.

I meant this situation in general isn't very different, the act itself was.About what Chris said, I totally agree on that. You can fight another player and get maybe a 2 game suspension. If you fought an umpire? Forget it. Your career is probably over. After reviewing the video it appears like the bat wasn't "tossed" but thrown with some measure of speed. If you're gonna throw the bat in frustration don't whip it in the direction of the umpire. I now find it hard to believe that this was an accident.PS Anyone interested in buying my Delmon Young autographed baseball card? Jigga
Looks like Delmon Young is starting down the Josh Hamilton road to nowhere if he keeps up things like this. Very bad and I think he needs a big suspension like 20 or more games. Not even Ricky Williams is as stupid as Josh Hamilton. FiddySicks
If this were to happen in Fenway Park, on national TV, playing at the top level in the sport, then you might have an arguementWhich reminds me of the time the Pawsax batter drop kicked the catcher after a bruchback pitch and charged the mound? Anyone recall that goon's name? I believe it was Izzy Alcantara. It was definitely Izzy. no WAY. I do NOT believe that. wow. and how bout that karate from chan ho park. I saw this video for the first time the other day. Lovin that Mike Sweeney snap on Jeff Weaver. Exactly. This suspension should be made throughout the leagues, so all AAA should honor it, as well as AA down the line. Anything affiliated with Major or Minor League Baseball should honor the suspension, as it sends a strong message that disrespectful behavior and violence towards the umpires is not tolerated.Hopefully, if he is released by the Devil Rays (who appropriately suspended him as well), any of the independent leagues will also honor the suspension, especially since this evidently was not an isolated incident. HatCityEnforcer
ESPN Radio makes for some good listening on the way into work...happened to catch Peter Gammons's segment on Mike & Mike In The Morning today and it shed quite a bit of light on this whole thing...Evidently he's got some serious anger-management issues...remember last year he was about not getting called up in September by the Rays after stinking up the joint in Durham. He's been suspended for doing dumb stuff like this in the past...as has been noted. However, the most telling thing I heard in the Gammons report was that BJ Upton (who was on base when this happened) went into the locker room shortly afterwords and just ripped Young a new one.Delmon Young's got a TON of talent...however, he's a knucklehead who's getting what he deserves (personally, there was intent there...done for the year at the VERY least, IMO) FANTASY TEAMSHousatonic U. Jigga
Delmon Young should not be suspended for this play.He should be outright banned from baseball by both Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball. Suspend for the season, require anger management classes, require therapy, but do not ban. He's a KID, he's 20. He made a mistake, punish for that mistake, don't ruin his life. Ron Artest was allowed back. Orlando Brown was allowed back. Delmon Young should be allowed back, but must undergo some type of counseling. The organization needs to step in and help this kid, thereby protecting their investment, instead of just outright releasing a supremely talented player. If the bat hadn't struck the up, I wonder if Young would have gotten the Bobby Knight treatment when he tossed that chair a long time ago. Guess we'll never know. On January 16, 2013 at 3:49 PM, NJTank said: Btw this is old hat for Notre Dame. Knits Rockne made up George Tip's death bed speech.
