Freddy Adu is much Ado about nothing

Yep.

17 years old starts 29 out of 32 games for his professional team.

Scores 11 goals and 17 assists in 87 games.

Youngest player to ever play for the US National Team.

Man he sucks.

He's not Pele, but he's a pretty nice player that is only SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD.

All the hype he gets on ESPN hes was supposed to be Pele

Hes only 17. I think hes got a year or two left to live up to the hype.

Salt Lake? That might help the Salt Lake franchise, but for him, moving from the East coast to the middle of the American outback isn't going to help him stay in the limelight unless he scores 3 goals a game all year long. It feels like he's been banished.

Sure, but playing in a starring role for Real Salt Lake certainly helps Adu more than being one of several stars on a multi-talented team like D.C. United.

Adu is basically auditioning for a new job in Europe. Being the focal point of a team will give him the chance to showcase his talents more, rather than listing in Washington where he squabbled with the head coach.

It's a good move for Adu. Now, he just has to live up to the hype.

17, and if I am not mistaken this is his 3rd professional season. That's pretty damned impressive. The only reason he is still here is because you have to be 18 to play in Europe. Also, from what I understand, he's a pretty intelligent kid. He graduated from high school 3 years early so he could persue his dreams.

When he gets to England and is surrounded by the best players in the world, he may actually turn out to be the next Pele. While he may not be Pele yet, US soccer is also not Brazil. Pele was surrounded by many, many quality players. Let's be honest, while US soccer has come a long way, there are guys who start on the US squad who wouldn't even make the teams of the elite countries of the world.

What worries me is this: with Adu now off of the MLS biggest stage, what ties does he have to the US National Team? DC United is by far the most established club in the MLS, and with Adu not working in DC they had to ship him off to RSL. Most of you are probably right that he will be in Europe in a few years, but now with him off DC United, does this jeopardize him playing for the USMNT and going to play with Ghana?

Playing for Salt Lake hasn't been a problem for Eddie Pope. The current US Mens National Team also includes players from Kansas City and has, in the past, featured players from Columbus.

I'm not really sure that the size of the market in MLS adds any weight to a player's exposure. This is still a small league, regardless of whether a player is in DC and New England or Salt Lake and Kansas City. Besides, I would hope the USMNT places more weight on players with European experience rather than focusing on a player's location withing MLS which, despite its recent improvements in quality, is still the CFL to the NFL-like leagues across the pond.

Adu already has a cap for the US National team, when he came on to play against Canada in January.

You act like ESPN is some all knowing source when we all know they are horrible. "But ESPN said that Freddy Adu was supposed to be the next Pele. I don't believe he is, so that means he sucks." God, Tank, I can't believe some of the things you say because I don't know how you are going to criticize a 17 year old by saying that he is "much ado about nothing." Let's see, he is 17 years old and is in his 3rd season of professional soccer and will play soccer in the top leagues in Europe when he turns 18. I don't get how he is much ado about nothing. Have you ever even watched any of his MLS games, Tank? He may not be Pele (yet) or ever will be, but damn, he is one hell of a player with an extremely bright future ahead of him.
