so here they are, the best 8 teams in football:

Arsenal v Liverpool

AS Roma v Man Utd

Schalke 04 v FC Barcelona

Fenerbahce v Chelsea

i think its a shame the four english teams didnt get four non-english teams to play, and as a liverpool fan i reckon theyve got a tough draw. could be a great 2 legs of football though...

Arsenal and Liverpool play on the weekend in the EPL, between the two legs. So its Arsenal vs. Liverpool 3 times in a row. Imagine if they squared off against each other in the Carling cup and the FA Cup? I think Fenerbahce can beat Chelsea, going into Turkey and winning is next to impossible.

First why is it a shame the four English teams aren't playing four non-English teams that smells of a little homer non-homerism, what you want an all English semis yeah that would be cool, Ok now being somewhat sane for a second that would suck. (Now not sane) Lets watch the Premier league all over again, awesome. Ok that was harsh but, honestly thats why I like European football its a chance to see giants of other domestic leagues square off. Its a chance to see different flavors of football clash. I would enjoy the Champions League a lot less the rest of the way if was that way.

In regards to the second post, I think Chelsea are going to walk through both these legs.

I think a Man Utd. v Barcelona match would be great. I know that sounds so American, but honestly I think that would be the best match up of the remaining teams.

Don't think Chelsea is just going to "walk through" both legs.. Fenerbahce is 4-0-0 at home thus far in the Champs League, beating Inter, Porto, PSV and CSKA Moscow. Pretty decent teams if you ask me. And to see Chelsea going into Turkey and beating Fenerbahce seems real unlikely. I think its easier to score an away goal at Stamford Bridge than in Instanbul. And in the end it all comes down to away goals.

Personally, would have rather wanted all the four English teams to play non-European teams so that if the better teams win out, it'd be some permutation of Roma, Schalke, Barca, and Fenerbahce in the semis.

You do stand-up Will?

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

No, I just feel that no matter the matchups, the four non-English sides would advance had two of them not be forced to face each other.

Really....and what is the logical basis for this in your world?

More talent, given that English teams are reticent to spend money for good players the way a Roma or a Barca would.

Money doesn't equal a better team. Just ask Real Madrid, although they did have success with big names, they struggled just the same with big players. I.e. Beckham, Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo, Owen, etc. etc.

Does nobody remember the 2004 UCL Finals....Monaco vs. Porto?

And...Arsenal, one of Englands bigger clubs seldom buys big players. Arsene Wenger is a genius when it comes to this, scouts for raw talent, and then develops it into gold.

Thats exactly why I would have liked to see the English teams stay apart for one more round. We're probably going to get next to no coverage of the Schalke vs Barca game now, which is a pity. Alright, they might have all won and we would have had an all English semi final, but by the semi final stage there's not much you can do about that, it's just the best teams left. If it were to be the four Premier League teams, then you've got to say fair enough.

Yeah, Chelsea (500 million since Abramovich took over, with 300 million spent in 2003 alone), Manchester United (72 million this past summer), and Liverpool (40 million this season) don't spend money...

I've been getting that sinking feeling about my Gunners lately, at least in the Premier League where ManU has finally moved ahead of them for the lead, and this is not a good time for Arsenal to have drawn a fellow Premiership side for the Champions' League. Yes, they knocked out AC Milan in the first Champions' League knockout round, and I was hoping that might jumpstart them for the EPL stretch run, but they've sadly reverted to their form from much of last year, failing to finish on scoring chances and settling for draws against teams they should have beaten.

Right now i'm really leaning to Fenerbahce to take Chelsea out., as always I'm rooting for Manchester United, and Liverpool to go through because my two favourite Ronaldo and Gerrard. Then Barcelona is an obvious choice over Schalke.

Mission accomplished thus far. :D

I'll eat some crow today. I thought and said that Chelsea would walk through both legs errrrr wrong. Two absolutely fabulous goals from Fenerbahce.

This is what happens when I forget to set my DVR.

(Note to self: Make sure DVR is set for the highlights show on Friday.)
