New DC United Sponsored kits tomorrow

At first I was a bit skeptical, but when you see the kits on the rack, they look great. They look like they have been the corporate sponsor forever. Fits right in with the jersey. Very professional in my opinion.

I'm surprised logo/uniform fanatics that make up the population of this forum aren't jumping off cliffs or declaring the apocalypse. This is one step further to ruining professional sports uniforms with commercialism. If the Chicago Bears put a VW symbol on their helmet would that be cool, too? Because one day that's going to happen.

Maybe there isn't much outrage in this case because

1) This is very common in soccer and

2) Soccer doesn't get the revenue via commercials that other sports depend on.

I saw, I came, I left.

Do I like sponsor logos? Not particularly. But I accept that they're part of world football culture.

Frankly, I might have minded this development if MLS had developed a worthwhile uniform aesthetic anywhere in its history. But if teams are going to deface the front of their shirts anyway, they might as well get a little money from it.

That's ridiculous.

Chicago and Detroit are way too close to each other for the Bears to have a German automaker as a sponsor.

oh, and back to the whole futbol/soccer sponsorship thing...

i love watching the ABC feeds w no interruptions in gameplay by having commerical sponsors in the score/clock area. give me that for all other sports and i'd be cool w sponsored logos all over the unis in all sports.

(wait, now how does NASCAR get away with it? hmmm)

I think the jersey works. If someone is good at designing soccer jerseys, maybe they could project every team's uniform with a sponsor that they feel would work best with the current jersey.

We used to say Found On Road Dead. However, my father owns a Ford Expedition and I own a Mazda (which is owned by Ford and has Ford parts). Neither car has given us problems in the 10 years we've owned them...so I guess that old joke doesn't apply anymore.

I'm with you. My only request is that jerseys be available for sale to fans without the sponsor logo. If VW wants to pay my soccer team to wear its logo on their shirts, that's great. If VW wants me to wear its logo on my shirt, I expect a cut of the money, either in terms of a cash payment or a discount on logo-bearing jerseys. Until that happens, I demand a sponsor-free jersey.

Easy. NASCAR is not a sport. Therefore the commercial sponsorships don't violate anyone's sense of the "purity" of the athletic moment.

I disagree. Nascar is much a sport just like the NFL, MLB, NHL, HORSE RACING, Bowling, and golf especially with the advertisements and some of their athletes having to have stamina, concentration, and endurance to race in a car for 4.5 hrs.

That's what we used to say when I was a kid. :D

I've heard the same thing about all sports merchandise - "I'm not wearing a Yankees cap unless the Yankees are paying me to advertise them."

Agreed.

It is a sport-like competitive event. Like poker.

Well, if you don't like the Yankees, then, yeah, you should not wear a Yankees cap unless the Yankees pay you to advertise. That's the point: the wearing of a logo expresses one's affinity for that logo. I have no affinity for VW, so I do not wish to wear a VW logo when I express my affinity for DC United. When I lived in Amsterdam, you could buy Ajax jerseys without the ABN-AMRO logo; that's all I ask.

And I don't say NASCAR isn't a sport to dis NASCAR. My definition of a sport is an athletic competition between individuals or teams whose outcome is determined by objective scorekeeping subject to established rules. Therefore baseball is a sport. Football is a sport. Even golf and curling are sports. But figure skating is not a sport because it is judged by subjective scorekeeping. NASCAR is not a sport because, though it is an objectively scored competition, the competition is not fundamentally athletic. I'm sure it's hugely physically demanding to drive a NASCAR race, but the bodily elements of the thing aren't the point of the exercise. It's OK to be a fan of competitions that are not sports.

I'm glad that another MLS team got a decent sponsor...way better than Xango or Amigo Energy. Good to see teams getting bigger sponsors i.e. Best Buy, Glidden. While i'm glad D.C. finally got a sponsor, the logo feels kinda outta place. I can't put my finger on it, but it looks odd.

I'll give Amigo Energy the benefit of the doubt because they're a local corporation and went to the Dynamo unsolicited about sponsoring their kits.

Xango is a Utah local corporation as well.

The VW is alright but i feel something white and red would've been better (like Verizon who already has ties with an DC team i.e. the Verizon Center)

College sports as we know them are just about dead. The lid is off on all the corruption that taints just about every major program and every decision that the schools or the NCAA make is only about money, money, and more money. We'll have three 16+ team super-conferences sooner rather than later, killing much of the regional flair and traditional rivalries that make college sports unique and showing the door to any school that doesn't bring money to the table in the process. Pretty soon the smaller schools are going to have to consider forming their own sanctioning body to keep the true spirit of college sports alive because the NCAA will only get worse in it's excess from here
