Report: Congo soccer riot over 'witchcraft' leaves 11 dead

KINSHASA , Congo -- At least 11 people were killed in a stadium riot in eastern Congo after a soccer player tried to use witchcraft to win a local match, U.N.-backed Radio Okapi reported on Monday.

Nyuki club was losing to local rivals Socozaki on Sunday when Nyuki's goalkeeper advanced up the field and tried to use "fetishist" spells to turn the tide of the match, Okapi said, without giving more details.

When a police commander tried to break up an ensuing brawl between rival players, members of the crowd pelted him with rocks, the radio added.

Police fired teargas in response, causing a stampede to the exits in which 11 people were killed and several injured, Okapi said.

As elsewhere in Africa, many Congolese hold traditional animist beliefs and use spells, fetishes and charms to practise witchcraft, often combined with other religions like Christianity or Islam.

Sunday's riot happened in Butembo, in North Kivu province, where fighting between the army and rebels has raged on despite the official end of a 1998-2003 war that has killed an estimated 5.4 million people through violence, hunger and disease.

If not that, they'd have found another reason to riot.

That's taking it to a WHOLE new level.

Sadly in soccer it isn't a "new" level

Yeah, I can almost guarantee this isn't the first time this has happened in soccer, and probably won't be the last.

That said, this is still amazingly bizarre.

Makes me glad that we don't have that silly, third-world heathen tradition over here.

I mean, imagine how many people would die needlessly if we had soccer?

Not the old "Trying to invoke a fetishist spell"?

What was he trying to do, get them to sniff each other's feet?

Maybe dress up in women's clothing?

Bit of S&M?

Oh, and I've got a site.

silly people, 'festishist' can only be performed in areas with extensive levels of S&M chi. San Francisco, upper east side new york city, austin and areas within boston are areas that have the level of S&M chi to pull off the spell. Otherwise they are wasting their time.

As an Africology major, I'd like to point out that witchcraft is an entirely European/Western concept and the overwhelming majority of stories about "witchcraft" (and "voodoo doctors") are actually misconceptions by ethnocentric western reporters. I'm absolutely positive that what happened here was no different than what happens at matches in Europe between rival clubs with catholic and protestant undertones.

All I can do is shake my head at how we're supposed to be such an advanced and educated society, yet these stereotypes are still confirmed in the "legit" media.

OH is this a soccer thread?!

SOCCER SUCKS!!

Did you see that? That's right I said it. Look at me dammit! I'm cool!

Internet Community Rule 307a(3): Never allow any mention of soccer (aka football, futbol, fußball, etc) go by without letting everyone know that you think the sport is inferior.

OK now that being said, Baptists and Catholics should not be allowed to play professional sports. It's in the bible. Look it up.
