oddball
I've come into this late, on page three, but I've always said that if Pete admits to betting on baseball and appologizes to the fans and the game, then lift the ban and put him in the Hall the next year he can go in. It will never happen, because Pete's so prideful, so to me it's a moot point. It's the conditions that were laid out from the beginning, and it's been what almost 20 years and Pete is still being stupid and stubborn on the issue. The only person suffering from this is Pete Rose. We all know he's a Hall of Fame player, so it's not hurting us. It doesn't hurt baseball, because they're sticking to a standard set... unlike the non-standard for steroids which is hurting baseball more. So the only person "suffering" is Pete, if he even cares, and somehow I don't think he does, so if that's the case, then no one is hurt by him not being in the Hall of Fame. Epiphanic
Here's a question for the Pete for the Hall camp:Will Charlie Hustle's career be forgotten because he's not in the Hall? Does not being in the Hall make him less of a player? "In the arena of logic, I fight unarmed."I tweet & tumble.
rams80
Major League Baseball Rule 21(d): Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared ineligible for one year.Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.Major League Baseball Rule 21 (g): A printed copy of this Rule shall be kept posted in each clubhouse. They say that ignorance of the law is no excuse. Well what's your excuse if you walk past the law - written in three languages - every day?Knowing MLB teams, said law is used as either a coaster, toilet paper, kleenex, or paper towels during the season. So reading it might be problematic. On 8/1/2010 at 4:01 PM, winters in buffalo said: You manage to balance agitation with just enough salient points to keep things interesting. Does not being in the Hall make him less of a player?Look I know this is a tough issue for Baseball. My own view is that his career will be diminished by not being in the Hall of Fame. Sure the numbers will always be in the books, but somehow the mans career will have been disrespected. Many will argue that it deserves to be disrespected. But if the Hall doesn't matter, whats the argument about? 2011/12 WFL Champions
rangerfan94
Once again In my opinion, Rose should be in as a PLAYER. PERIOD. His stats speak for themselves. He bet on baseball as a MANAGER. Come on the man almost killed Ray Fosse in a meaningless Allstar game. He gave 200% effort on the field. He has my vote.....................and by the way...I cant stand the man. He has an ego problem an attitude problem, and is a self centerd son of a bitch. But then again so do many past and present players.

The guy's teammates loved him, and he gave 100% every single day. I never got the chance to see him with the Phillies (didn't start watching games until '85 or '86), but I remember as an 8-year-old, playing around with the rabbit ears to try and get the UHF channel that broadcast the Phillies games when they were in Cincinnati, so I could see him play (actually, I think at that time he was player + manager).Every great athlete... hell, anyone who is really successful in anything has an ego. Some people may be a little more introverted, and their ego is hidden, but it's there. The_Admiral
He bet on baseball as a MANAGER.That's kind of a really big problem, you know. rangerfan94
You are correct, BUT did he do anything to " tarnish " the game as a player? I dont think so. so. in my opinion he should be in as a player. Rose is in no way a HOF candidate as a manager. That was all I was trying to point out, and in no way do I condone his betting on the game, and then lying about it.

rangerfan94
Pete Rose should be in the HOF based on his stats....as a player. I dont buy into "the person". Their are many HOF members who were not exactly the greatest role models, if that what you mean by "person"
The_Admiral
By "the person" we mean his entire body of work as uniformed personnel in Major League Baseball. He bet on Reds games while influencing the outcomes of Reds games. You can't do that. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
rangerfan94
So what about Mantle and Mays.... they were involved with casinos. Mantle was suspended by Kuhn and reinstated by Ueberoth. I dont know to what extent the rules are for being associated withh gambling.....but both were. Rose bet on the game. There's a huge difference. Mays and Mantle were never busted dead to rights for betting on the game only to deny it for a long time and then finally come clean simply because it would help sell a book. Mantle was suspended on the grounds for " any association with gambling ". What are the guidelines or rules for this ? Mantle was warned but took the job anyway. He broke the rules. I know there is a difference between the two situations, but what in the baseball code of ethics...rules or whatever seperates them?
STL FANATIC
You don't elect Joe Schmo the player, or Joe Schmo the manager, or Joe Schmo the contributor.Yes you do. You go in as a player, manager, umpire, or executive/pioneer. You can also go in as a broadcaster and writer, but that's more being voted as the Frick or Spinks award winner as opposed to technically being "inducted" into the HOF.Don't get me wrong, I still see your point, but you are inducted into a specific category. Now I don't know if anyone has ever been inducted into more than one anyways (other than probably broadcasters, but again, that's somewhat different).
