BBTV
Beacuse they were rebranding themselves from being rays that swim in the water to rays of sunshine to the point of fining players for saying "Devil Rays." Then they kept the swimming ray on their jerseys. Sloppy move from an otherwise intelligent organization. They did that?!Yes. IIRC, someone in the front office actually got fined for doing it (there were stories about this shortly after their rebrand.) I don't think the fines were very much - it more of a "for fun" kind of thing rather than a serious punishment. Showtime029
Take it for what its worth but a post tonight on Metsblog says that the new Mets jersey will go on sale on 11/27 which is contrary to what was stated a few days back about such an announcement coming in December. As I've stated several times in this thread the date for the unveiling is 11/27. Not sure where December came from.

BallWonk
Hmmm. I'm not impressed. I'm also not so bothered by the drop shadow as such. However, the black drop shadow really doesn't work with the off-white fabric for me. There's a kind of tonal clash going on there; the "cream" jersey is a warm tone, essentially a very, very light brown, whereas black tackle-twill is a very cold color. For similar reasons, I'm not loving this jersey in general. Something about that cream just doesn't work with royal pinstripes very well. The fact that this jersey has internal clash issues only magnifies the overall clash that the Mets will now have with their home uniforms in bright white and cream. White vs. cream really should be a fundamental one-or-the-other issues. Still, as long as the Mets actually wear no-black caps and batting helmets with this, they will at least not have made their overall uni identity worse this off-season. Which is kind of a big deal for the Mets; 2010 will be two straight years of being only the second-ugliest team in the NL. Much as I'm a huge fan of both the 1960s Mets uniforms and the 1980s racing-stripe unis, this new uni makes me think the realistic best-case scenario for the Mets would be to adopt the non-striped white uni as the full-time home uniform, make it cream instead of bright white, and adopt the all-blue cap at home and the black-and-blue cap on the road. With black drop shadows on all jersey scripts. It would at least be a consistent look, an across-the-board B-minus level of uniforms rather than a mixed back of B-plus and D-minus elements. BBTV
I don't mind the Mets black nearly as much as most of you, but I agree that it doesn't go with the cream jersey. If you're going to go retro, go all the way - don't go with a retro base and then put a modern-effect on your script. I really didn't mind the shadow on the white pinstriped jersey, nor do I mind it on the plain white jersey, which I agree with everyone else should be the primary home.
