Good luck to Joe Lacob & Peter Guber in dealing with "San Francisco Politics" and the special interest groups. Hopefully they can get it done.

Well they reportedly hired a pair of city hall insiders who have a great track record of getting things approved in the city, and they've got the entire Board of Supervisors on their side (which in and of itself is a miracle and very rare) so they're starting from a good position as far as SF goes. If anyone could get approval it's these guys. I mean so far the only concession they're asking for is a sweetheart lease in exchange for improving the two piers and building the arena. Not unlike the deal the Giants currently enjoy just down the waterfront.

Some key points regarding the move:

-$500 million privately funded arena

-$100 million in private funding to shore up the piers

-Generous lease in exchange for the shoring up of the pier (not unlike what the Giants already have with SF)

-No name change yet (they?ll be ?doing what the fans want? regarding the name when they actually move which will probably be the expected SF Warrior name)

-Unanimous support from the Board of Supervisors

-Team hired insiders to help them get through SF's massive bureaucracy

-No new taxes or general fund hits for the city

-17,000-19,000 seats

-2017 opening day

-Lied to Oakland as recently as late last week telling them they still had a shot

Talk about the possibility of massive stadium construction in the Bay Area over the next 5 years:

-49ers new stadium

-Warriors new arena

-A's new stadium (maybe)

-Earthquakes new stadium

-Raiders new stadium (pipe dream?)

Kinda like what the New York Metro Area has gone through:

2007- Prudential Center (Devils; Newark, NJ)

2009- Yankee Stadium (Yankees; Bronx, NY)

2010- Citi Field (Mets; Flushing, NY)

2010- MetLife Stadium (Jets, Giants; East Rutherford, NJ)

2010- Red Bull Arena (Red Bulls; Harrison, NJ)

2012- Barclay Center (Nets; Brooklyn, NY)

Heck even Madison Square Garden is in process of being renovated. The Only team left in the cold are the NY Islanders.

And the Nassau Moselium is the worst building in professional sports. Even minor league teams are better off.

Ladies and Gentlemen, you're San Francisco Warriors are back in a little over an hour. And with them ends the dumbest name in American sports.

New England Patriots, you are now on the clock.

Nah, Chivas USA is on the clock. New England Patriots actually is the perfect name given they are New England's team and don't play in an actual "city" (sorry Foxboro). If another NFL team moved to New England however you'd be right. Golden State never made any sense since they've never been the Golden State's team to say nothing of just being ridiculous using one of California's many nicknames rather than the state name. That's why Chivas USA is on the clock. They in no way represent the entire USA and on top of that their team name Chivas is just a stolen Mexican team name. Not only is it geographically ridiculous, it's also limiting in that any of the Mexican fans they claimed they wanted to draw in will be limited to solely those who root for Chivas Guadalajara.

Nah, New England isn't that bad. Now the "Bay State Patriots" moniker...hoo baby that blew chunks.

I like the Chivas USA name. They're the American version of the Chivas club.

If we're going to trump the New England Patriots with teams from Major League Soccer, then we should also bring nicknames into the conversation from minor league baseball, the NBDL, and every other ho-hum league mainstream America has never heard of.

Don't get used to it. Chivas USA is reportedly rebranding after this season possibly to Chivas LA.

What concessions are they gettin from the city? I don't understand what needs to get "passed" if this is privately funded. Who is their lease from? Wouldn't they own the arena outright if they built it themselves?

I'm assuming the city owns the pier itself. That's what they are leasing space on.

The land is not city property, rather the plot is owned by the Port of San Francisco.

According to the Chronicle, both the State Lands Commission plus the Bay Conservation and Development Commission also need to approve the project since.

The State Lands Commission has balked at pier development before, such as in 2007.

Allowable uses of the waterfront under the public trust enforced by the State Lands Commission generally include maritime, historic and environmental restoration, recreation and retail and other commercial activities if they are used by the general public.

True but those were also not unanimously supported projects by the city leadership (for some unknown reason). The lease however would presumably be from the port.

Chivas LA works too, for similar reasons. It's the LA branch of the Chivas organization.
