So torn on the realignment. On one hand, it fixes some issues that need fixing, yet the whole 14 vs. 16 thing does feel wholly unfair. Until the time comes for 32 teams, it seems by far more preferable to have 6 divisions at 5 teams each.

As a Red Wings fan, seeing them move away from long-standing rivalries is also tough, although to be perfectly honest, in leaving the Blackhawks and others they'd now be in the same division as other classic teams like the Maple Leafs, Bruins and Canadiens. Old rivalries would be lost, but there'd be new ones created too that are (nearly) as compelling.

I don't understand why they're so set on this four-conference thing

It's the best way to justify expanding to 32 teams :angered:

So the long term plan is "Phoenix stays, Seattle and Kansas City get expansion teams"? OTIGDNHL.

What gives Detroit the right to say the only need to visit the West Coast once a year if they came to the West? They do realize Planes these days aren't the old wind up ones from the old days right?

It means the fifth-place team from one division can overtake the fourth-place team from the other one (looks like we're back to divisions and conferences after all) if its record is better. I think the AHL does it. Yay, we're stealing from the AHL.

The proposed playoff system would be basically the same as the current, except that it would guarantee the top three teams in each division make it in, right? I don't see what the hell the NHL is thinking here, but then again, it's the NHL.

In theory it's supposed to protect against teams from the 7s having an easier road than the teams in the 8s, but if we're sticking with Western Conference and Eastern Conference, and both Eastern Conference divisions are 8, then it still screws them over. This is dumb. Just flip Winnipeg and Nashville, seriously.

It's a good thing we have shootouts, because otherwise those Preds-Panthers games would never end.

Well, preferrably flip Winnipeg and Quebec, but yes. Do that and copy a good thing from the NBA instead of just bad - schedule each team to visit each city once a year. It's just dumbfounding that the league thinks it's a good idea that Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, and the other top stars only visit some towns every other year. Because why would you want to market your top stars?

In theory, all they would have to do is copy the NBA's scheduling algorithm wholesale, but that would mean giving up the 2-home-2-away season series with teams in the conference but outside the division. Atlantic Division teams wouldn't like giving up a game or two with Washington, Boston, and Toronto, and teams like the Stars and Avs would rather make trips to each other or thereabouts than Montreal and Florida. it's all quite tricky when you have a lot of intractable owners and a goofy footprint.

It's less about travel and more about fanbase engagement. The problem being in the West right now is that most of the away games start 1-3 hours later than the home games do. It hurts TV ratings, engagement with the fanbase, and the portability of Wings fans to travel to other markets aside from Chicago and Columbus. You also have rivalry issues - for a traditional Original Six market, Boston, Toronto, and Montreal are still stronger draws as compared to Phoenix, Dallas, and San Jose. I think they'd love to bring the old Norris back, but John Ziegler's not walking through that door.
