Personally, I love this logo. (I also love everything Lady Liberty)

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Knowing the people of Connecticut, they could never support another NHL team. The damn city closes up shop at 6:30 PM every night.

Also, as a response to your whole "they cant have a team that in an area that is split between Boston and NY fans"....what would you say about the Devils, who were put right in the middle of Rangers, Islanders, and Flyers territory.

Devils attendance was horrible for their first 5 seasons. They miraculously made it to the Conference finals, losing in 7 games in 1988-89. They then continued to be fairly good until again reaching the Conference finals in 1993-94 (against the Rangers), and then winning the Cup the year after.

I guarantee a lot of Flyers, Rangers and Isles fans that weren't loyal enough jumped ship. You get enough of those in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, you've got yourself a fan base.

All in all, they experienced success relatively early in their life and gained some fans from it.

The Whalers advanced past the first round once.

That could easily have been the difference between "struggling team in small market" and "Cinderella story that everybody wants to be a part of".

But would sticking around in Hartford butterfly away the roster additions that made those runs possible?
